Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza feels that the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most special franchise T20I league in the world. Sikandar Raza also revealed reasons why IPL stands out from other leagues in the world.

Sikandar Raza is currently playing in International League T20 (ILT20)- a franchise T20I league in UAE. Later, he will participate in the Pakistan Super League 2024 (PSL 2024). Post the tournament, he will be part of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024).

After his incredible performance for Zimabwe, Raza earned an IPL contract in the 2023 season. In the IPL 2023 auction, Punjab Kings bought the right-handed batsman for Rs. 50 lakh. The Shikhar Dhawan-led side retained him ahead of IPL 2024 auction.

I think IPL definitely stands out with a couple of factors: Sikandar Raza

During a chat with SportsNow, Sikandar Raza said that IPL is a really special tournament. According to the Zimbabwe stalwart, the crowd support makes the IPL better than any other league.

“I just think that the availability of all the players for one tournament makes IPL really special. In most of the matches we play the crowd comes and supports their teams. That’s something that’s really different in IPL. The only other league when it comes to crowds that comes close to IPL is PSL. So I think IPL definitely stands out with a couple of factors, yes”, the all-rounder said.

I am very grateful and blessed that Punjab picked me: Raza

Sikandar Raza also added that he doesn’t wish to play for a different franchise in IPL. He is also grateful to Punjab Kings (PBKS) for giving him a chance to play in Indian Premier League.

“No, IPL is such a big and global event that I am very grateful and blessed that Punjab [Kings] picked me. And I don’t think I can ever replay their faith. I mean, they were the only team that raised the baton on the auction day”.

“So, if they hadn’t done that, I don’t think I would have been part of IPL last year, let alone this year. So, no man. Being part of the IPL is a wonderful experience. And I am very grateful and humbled by the fact that Punjab has picked me”, the 37-year-old further said.

Meanwhile, Sikandar Raza is part of Dubai Capitals in the ongoing ILT20 2024. The right-handed batsman has mustered 263 runs across 10 games averaging 32.87 and is the leading run-getter for his team. The occasional off-spinner has also executed a wonderful performance with the ball. He accounts for 9 wickets across 10 games at a superb economy of just 5.80.

David Warner is one of the greatest openers of all time and has also achieved a lot in international cricket. He has won the World Test Championship with Australia in 2023, the T20 World Cup in 2021, and two ODI World Cups in 2015 and 2023. He recently retired from ODIs and Tests after the three-match Test series against Pakistan was concluded. Recently, the Zimbabwe all-rounder and his Dubai Capitals teammate Sikandar Raza talked about David Warner’s captaincy and how he has a very calm personality as a leader.

David Warner has captained Australia in some matches and has also led T20 franchises across the world. He led the IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL trophy in 2016 beating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the finals that season. David Warner is one of the greatest Australian cricketers and has a terrific record in all three formats for Australia. He was also leading the ILT20 franchise Dubai Capitals.

Sikandar Raza was asked about David Warner’s leadership finesse and he said that Warner as a leader allows the players to make their own decisions and does not want things to be done in his way. David Warner allows his bowlers to set their field and his batters to bat the way that will get the best out of them according to Raza. David Warner is a great leader and an even better batter who has scored ample runs in every format for Australia.

After being asked about Warner’s leadership, he told SportsNow, “No, no, no. I mean, David is quite big on the fact that we all know that, you know, we all have got here with the skill sets. That we have. All we have to do is use the same skill sets according to the conditions that are presented to us. So, no I wouldn’t say that he is strict and he wants things to be done his way.”

“David Warner Is Pretty Chill” – Sikandar Raza

“He allows you to have your field sets when you are bowling. He allows you to bat the way you think it will get the best out of you. David is pretty chill like that. And also, like, for the fact that we all know that you have been playing franchise cricket for so long,” Sikandar Raza added about David Warner as a captain.

David Warner is currently playing for Australia in the T20I series against West Indies where Australia has already taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the three-match series. They are looking to whitewash the West Indies team in the T20I series just like they did in the ODI series. The third and final T20I will be played on Tuesday, February 13.

Australia has won the ICC World Test Championship and ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in 2023 and if they are able to win the T20 World Cup in 2024, they will become the first nation to become World Champions in all three formats at the same time. Australia will face New Zealand in a three-match T20I series and a two-match Test series commencing on February 21, Wednesday.

After failing to qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023 and the T20 World Cup 2024, Zimbabwe Cricket has decided to make huge changes to its setup. The board has decided to hire good coaches for both the men’s and women’s teams whereas former player Prosper Utseya has resigned from his position as the head coach of the U19 side. Former first-class batsman Walter Chawaguta will be coaching the senior women’s team.

Walter Chawaguta was named as the interim head coach of the men’s team for the tour of Sri Lanka which was held in January 2024. Chawaguta was given an interim contract after Dave Houghton stepped down from his post following the debacle in the ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup qualifiers.

Zimbabwe Cricket decides to go under complete revamp after World Cup failures

The board of Zimbabwe Cricket met on Sunday, February 11, which was headed by Lloyd Mhishi. The committee released a statement that was set for the probe after Zimbabwe failed in back-to-back World Cup qualifiers. The statement read, “Adopted the comprehensive report presented by a committee of inquiry that was established to probe Zimbabwe’s World Cup qualification failures as well as to review ZC’s cricket affairs structure”.

“The three-member Committee, chaired by Lloyd Mhishi, presented its report to the board after gathering input from various stakeholders, both internal and external… the board resolved to adopt the report in its entirety and to immediately implement the committee’s recommendations,” the statement further added.

The Zimbabwe Cricket Board has also accepted a few recommendations which include the complete restructuring and transformation of its cricket affairs department and its personnel. The recommendations further include redesigning the domestic and development pathways, posting job openings for head coaches of the U19 and senior men’s national teams, and reorganizing the first-class coaching staff.

Zimbabwe Cricket has also decided to set up a national academy and also indoor training facilities in all their first-class provinces.

Zimbabwe as a cricketing nation has overcome a lot of development in the past few years. The team has been able to shine with their performance and has given tough competition to big teams. However, Zimbabwe recently lost to Namibia and Uganda and missed out on qualifying for the 2024 T20 World Cup from the Africa region. Zimbabwe managed to win four of the six games and finished third in the standings.

Other than the T20 World Cup in 2024, following their defeat to Scotland in the Super Six round of the competition, The Chevrons were also unable to secure a spot in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Despite winning four of their five games and topping Group A, Zimbabwe were unable to advance over the last hurdle.

The Chevrons defeated Pakistan and other elite teams at the 2022 T20 World Cup with an impressive show of play. Zimbabwe also presented fierce opposition to other teams, and at one point it prevented Pakistan from advancing to the tournament’s semifinals.

The Chevrons have recently invited India for a five-match T20I series which will be held just after the T20 World Cup 2024.

Soon after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024 in June, Zimbabwe will host India for a five-match T20I series from July 6. All the matches will be played at the Harare Sports Club in Harare and the final match of the series will be played on July 14. Zimbabwe Cricket announced this development by releasing a press release and has also released the schedule of the series.

Before this, India last toured Zimbabwe in 2022 and played a three-match ODI series. India were able to whitewash the hosts by 3-0. The series will also be very interesting to see as this will be the first time in many years that the Men in Blue will tour Zimbabwe for a T20I series.

Zimbabwe to hosts India for a five-match T20I series, Full Schedule Announced

Here Is The Full Schedule:

DAY DATE MATCH VENUE
Saturday 06-Jul 1st T20I Harare Sports Club
Sunday 07-Jul 2nd T20I Harare Sports Club
Wednesday 10-Jul 3rd T20I Harare Sports Club
Saturday 13-Jul 4th T20I Harare Sports Club
Sunday 14-Jul 5th T20I Harare Sports Club

Zimbabwe Cricket made the confirmation of the schedule of the series after having productive discussions with the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani was thrilled to announce the schedule of the series. Mauhlani mentioned that hosting India will be Zimbabwe’s biggest international attraction at home this year. He added that the game of cricket has always benefitted from India’s dedication and influence to the sport. He also thanked BCCI for committing to tour Zimbabwe once again.

He said, “We are absolutely thrilled to be hosting India for a T20I series in July in what will be our biggest international attraction at home this year. The game of cricket has always immensely benefited from India’s influence and dedication to the sport, and I would like to say a huge thank you to the BCCI for committing to tour Zimbabwe once again. The significance and magnitude of this tour cannot be over-emphasised, especially as it is coming at a time we are working round the clock to re-establish ourselves as a force to reckon with at the highest level of the game.”

India and Zimbabwe last played a T20I series against each other back in the year 2016. The series was a thriller as the three-match series was level at 1-1, and India had to come into the last match and win the series. Zimbabwe showed brilliant competition in all three games of the series as they registered 2 runs in the first game and also their deficit of losing the third match was only three runs. Other than 2016, India have also played 2 match T20I series against Zimbabwe back in 2015 which was levelled at 1-1.

It will be great to seen that whether big Indian names such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah become a part of the series or not. The final of the T20 World Cup will be played on June 29 2024, so it is going to be a busy schedule all together for the Indian cricket team if they reach the final of the T20 WC.

During the U19 World Cup 2024 match between Zimbabwe and England, the Zimbabwean team gave rise to a new controversy with the ‘obstruct the field’ appeal. The incident took place on the 4th ball of the 17th of the England innings. Zimbabwean bowler Ryan Simbi bowled a delivery that was missed by the England batsman Hamza Shaikh. The ball landed in between the legs and was close to the stumps.

While the Zimbabwean players made a short appeal for the LBW before Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Ryan Kamwemba went up to pick the ball. While Kamwemba was walking towards the ball, Hamza Shaikh gestured to the wicketkeeper to stop as he went up and picked the ball. Shaikh later gave the ball to Kamwemba. As Shaikh picked up the ball, Kamwemba looked towards the umpire and appealed for obstruct the field.

Watch – England U19 batsman Hamza Shaikh’s bizarre dismissal

Hamza Shaikh started to look at his team mate Theo Wylie who was standing at the other end, and was confused why the wicket-keeper appealed. As per the rulebook, any batter can be considered out if he/she is returning the ball to the opposition team after playing without the consent of the fielder or the wicketkeeper. The rule says, “Either batter is out Obstructing the field if, at any time while the ball is in play and, without the consent of a fielder, he/she uses the bat or any part of his/her person to return the ball to any fielder.”

Hamza Shaikh was given out under the laws as he didn’t wait for wicket-keeper Ryan Kamwemba’s consent to return the ball. Shaikh was dismissed for 1 run after facing nine deliveries.

Batting first in Potchefstroom, the England U19 team were able to put up a score of 237/7 c0urtesy of the fifties from Theo Wylie and Charlie Alison. Alison played an innings of 76 runs from 109 balls whereas Wylied ended up scoring 61 runs from 70 balls. Haydon Mustard also contributed with 41 runs from 47 balls.

Newman Nyamhuri ended up picking 2 wickets for Zimbabwe U19 whereas, Kohl Eksteen, Anesu Kamuriwo, and Matthew Schonken picked up 1 wicket each.

Chasing down the target, Zimbabwe were wrapped up for a mere 91 runs. No other than Panashe Tavuringa and Ronal Patel was able to touch the double digits and got out cheaply. Tazeem Ali ended up with a seven-wicket haul and put up a splendid bowling performance. Charlie Barnard and Jaydn Denly picked up 2 and 1 wickets respectively.  In the end, England were able to register a 146-run win and are placed in the 4th spot of the Super Six group B.

India, who are currently the defending champions of the tournament will be looking to win their sixth title and also continue their dominance. Australia are also one of the clear contenders to win the trophy this year, whereas Pakistan as well cannot be relegated.

The final of the tournament will be played on February 11 at the Sahara Park Willowmoore Cricket Stadium in Benoni.

A month after 2 Zimbabwe all-rounders Wesley Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta tested positive for consuming a banned substance during an in-house anti-doping test, have been handed a 4-month ban each from all cricketing activities in the country and world by the Zimbabwe cricket board.

The latest development was confirmed by the country’s apex cricketing board on Thursday afternoon and have also decided to cut 50% of their match fees which will be applied from this month onwards. That might mean that both Wesley Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta will get half of their salaries until March or April.

The latest setback comes one month after the cricket board had provisionally suspended the duo of all-rounders after an out-of-competition drug test was scheduled by the board. The ZCB had released in a statement that “Both tested positive for a banned recreational drug in an out-of-competition case recorded during a recent in-house doping test.”

Other than these 2, batter Kevin Kasuza who made his last appearance for the national team way back in 2021, has also been banned by the cricket board after he too tested positive for a banned substance. This issue is becoming very prevalent, especially within the domestic cricketing circuit.

With another World Cup (T20) in the USA and West Indies coming up in less than 5 months time, it will be interesting to see impct of the following development on the team. They do have a promising player in the form of Sikander Raza but his contribution alone will not make any difference.

Zimbabwe’s most recent memorable win in an ICC event had come during the last ICC T20 World Cup edition in Australia where they defeated Pakistan in a closely fought match by just 1 run but those types of wins occur very rarely, at least in major events.

Zimbabwe Cricket Board States Madhevere And Mavuta Undergoing Rehabilitation

After handing out 4-month bans on Wesley Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta, the Zimbabwe cricket board has also ensured that they will give the 2 players another chance to prove themselves after they expressed major grief about the instance.

Both the players apparently told the ZCB that they regret having consumed the banned substance and the investigation committee has given them the green signal to try and stage a comeback in the country’s high-performance center where they have already started the rehabilitation process under supervision.

“In taking the decision, the Committee also considered some mitigating factors, with both players showing remorse and having already started working on withdrawing from the habit and getting their systems clean,” a Zimbabwe cricket board official said.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwean team has completed their recent tour of Sri Lanka where they played a 3-match ODI and T20I series. They were blanked 2-0 in the ODI series and also lost the T20I series. Their next assignment is against England in a one-off Test match from May 28.

Zimbabwe were honored with the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award 2023 for their sportsmanship during the Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier. Zimbabwe displayed sportsmanship as they consoled the West Indies star Akeal Hosein, who was shattered, as the Men In Maroon missed out on qualifying for the ODI World Cup.

The West Indies had a disappointing performance in the competition, finishing fifth on the table with just one win in five games during the ‘Super Six’ stage. They secured a victory against Oman but faced losses to Sri Lanka, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe also fell short of securing a spot in the ODI World Cup held in India, finishing in third place on the table with six points. Despite having the same points as the Netherlands and Scotland, Zimbabwe failed to qualify due to their lower Net Run Rate (NRR).

The International Cricket Council (ICC) took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to announce Zimbabwe as the winner of the Spirit of Cricket Award 2023 for their sportsmanship during the Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

“Consoling the opposition This heartwarming moment from the Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier wins the ICC Spirit of Cricket award for 2023,” wrote the caption.

Zimbabwe Beat West Indies By 35 Runs In World Cup Qualifiers

Zimbabwe and West Indies faced off in the 13th match of the World Cup Qualifiers in Harare on June 24, 2023. The Zimbabwe team emerged as the winner by defeating the opposition by 35 runs. The Windies team fell short in the 269-run chase during the match

The West Indies won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. Joylord Gumbie and Craig Ervine added a 63-run partnership for the first wicket. However, the Windies bowlers bounced back, picking wickets at regular intervals and restricting the opposition to 112/4.

Sikandar Raza (68) and Ryan Burl (50) steadied the innings by adding an 87-run partnership for the fifth wicket. However, they faced a collapse, resulting in a score of 243/9. Tendai Chatara and Blessing Muzarabani added a crucial 25 runs for the last wickets in the innings.

The West Indies lost their wickets of Brendon King (20) and Johnson Charles (1) inside the first powerplay. However, all-rounder Kyle Mayers smashed a half-century, scoring 56 runs off 72 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries and a six during the run chase.

Shai Hope (30 off 39), Nicholas Pooran (34 off 36), and Roston Chase (44 off 53) made contributions in the middle order, but none of them managed to convert it into a big score. The team was bowled out for 233 runs, with Alzarri Joseph being dismissed in the 45th over.

This spirit is described in the preamble to the laws of cricket: “Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its laws but also within the spirit of the game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself.”

The preamble goes on to say: “The spirit of the game involves respect for:

  • Your opponents
  • Your own captain and team
  • The role of the umpires
  • The game’s traditional values

After the two nail-biting thrillers between the teams, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe locked horns with each other in the third match of the three-match series. The series decider between the teams took place at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field first. Their decision to bowl paid off staggeringly well as the bowlers were all over the Zimbabwe batters. Angelo Mathews drew the first blood of his team on the second ball as he sent the hero of the last game Craig Ervine for the duck.

Tinashe Kamunhukamwe (12) and Brian Bennett (29) added 35 runs for the second wicket and it seemed that Zimbabwe was right on the track but Mathews struck once again and removed the latter to jolt the visitors with a second blow.

The introduction of spin then completely shifted the game in Sri Lanka’s favor. Sean Williams (15) and skipper Sikander Raza (10) tried to settle and bail the team out of trouble but it didn’t happen as bowlers made sure that they put pressure on the batters.

After the wicket of the experienced duo, Sri Lanka bowlers were all over the batters and picked the remaining wickers in a jiffy. They spun a web around the batters and bundled them out for just 82 runs with over 5 and a half overs remaining.

Skipper Wanindu Hasaranga led from the front and picked four wickets and returned with the figures of 4/15. Apart from him, Maheesh Theekshana and veteran Angelo Mathews picked two wickets each. Dilshan Madushanka and Dhananjaya de Silva bagged one scalp each.

Sri Lanka had a watchful start in the chase and made sure that they didn’t lose wickets early. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis were right on the money in the powerplay and gave a solid start to the team, adding 50 runs in the first 6 overs.

The duo was going great guns before Sean Williams removed Kusal Mendis in the 8th over. He bowled a delivery that turned past the edge and hit the off-pole to send back the opening batter. The keeper-batted scored 33 runs off 27 balls and provided a great start to the team.

Pathum Nissanka on the other hand continued batting aggressively. He hit some lusty blows in his innings and ended with the innings of unbeaten 39 runs off 23 balls. Dhananjaya de Silva (15*), who came at 3, took time to settle but hit some boundaries in the end. Sri Lanka completed a comfortable 9-wicket win with 9.1 overs to spare.

Sri Lanka clinched the series by a margin of 2-1. They emerged victorious in the first game as they chased the target of 143 runs with 3 wickets in hand. The second game was nothing short of exceptional as it went down the wire and saw Zimbabwe chasing 20 runs in the last over to level the series.

Sri Lanka’s subdued performance in the World Cup led the thinktank to change captains across formats. The selection committee led by Upul Tharanga named three different cations across formats for the national team. Kusal Mendis will lead in ODIs, Wanindu Hasaranga in T20Is, and Dhananjaya de Silva in Test matches.

The weather forecast for the decider in Colombo looks good. However, there is a negligible chance of rain with the weather forecast cloudy in the afternoon. All the matches have been played in Colombo. The series started with a rained-off first ODI and will end with this third T20I.

The SL vs ZIM third and final T20I will be played in Colombo on January 18. The match starts at 7 pm IST. The series is leveled after Zimbabwe’s win in the second T20I. Both teams now have an equal chance to win the series.

Zimbabwe won the second T20I chasing 174 to win. They won in the penultimate ball of the match with Luke Jongwe (25 off 12 *) and Live Madande (15 off 5) scoring 20 off the final over. It was Craig Ervine’s 70 off 54 balls that set up the innings for Zimbabwe. Jongwe and Madende’s heroics then helped Zimbabwe win their very first T20I match against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka earlier in the game, scored 173/6 batting first. Skipper Wanindu Hasaranga was leading Sri Lanka in just his second T20I. They were rocked early and were tottering at 27/4. Charith Asalamnka (69) and Angelo Mathews (66*) then added a 118-run stand to take the hosts to a competitive total.

For Zimbabwe, the win was a momentous occasion as it was their very first win against the Islanders. They have leveled the series and now have a chance to beat Sri Lanka in a T20I series at home. Hasaranga will lead Sri Lanka while Sikandar Raza will lead Zimbabwe.

SL vs ZIM Match Preview- 3rd T20I, 2024

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s top-order is a concern after how they performed in the second T20I. They hardly made any contribution in the second T20I and need to step up with the bat in the decider. The lower order will continue to play a crucial role with Charith Asalaka and Angelo Mathes in form.

Wanindu Hasaranga is back in the side and will pair up with Maheesh Theekshana as the spin twins will look to bamboozle the opposition. Chameera and Madushanka have formed a good pace-bowling pair. They just need to be careful with their injury concerns. Batter Pathum Nissanka was ruled out of the ODI series with concerns of dengue and is back in the T20I series.

Sri Lanka Squad

Wanindu Hasaranga (captain), Charith Asalanka, Kusal Mendis (wicketkeeper), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Kusal Janith Perera (wicketkeeper), Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, Pathum Nissanka , Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, Akila Dananjaya.

Zimbabwe

The second T20I win was Zimbabwe’s first-ever against Sri Lanka. They have broken the deadlock in finally the fifth game between the two sides. Sikandar Raza will lead Zimbabwe and has plenty of experienced players to fall back upon. The likes of Craig Ervine, Sean Williams, Ryan Burl, and Raza himself form the batting core of the side.

The bowling looks good with Blessing Musarabani and Richard Ngarava delivering with the ball. Luke Jongwe’s all-round credentials add to the batting depth of the side. The visitors are sniffing a memorable series and the players just need to replicate their form. Heading into the decider, they are unlikely to change their playing XI given their inspirational performance in the second T20I.

Zimbabwe Squad

Sikandar Raza (captain), Brian Bennett, Ryan Burl, Craig Ervine, Joylord Gumbie, Luke Jongwe, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, Clive Madande, Wellington Masakadza, Carl Mumba, Tony Munyonga, Blessing Muzarabani, Ainsley Ndlovu, Richard Ngarava, Milton Shumba

Colombo is all set to host the SL vs ZIM third T20I on January 18. The match starts at 7 pm IST. This is the decider between the two sides with the series levelled at 1-1.

Zimbabwe bounced back with a magnificent win in the second T20I. They chased down the 174 required to win in the penultimate delivery of the match. Luke Jonge’s all-around show was critical to his team’s win in the SL vs ZIM second T20I.

The chase was set up by Craig Ervine who scored 70 off 54 balls. Brian Bennett playing his fifth T20I scored a crucial 25 off 20 balls. Jongwe then added a 35-run stand with Clive Madande (15 off 5) to win the match and level the series.

Earlier in the game, Sri Lanka were tottering at 27/4 before Angelo Mathews (66*) and Charith Asalanka (69) added a 118-run stand to take the team score to 173/6. Luke Jongwe and Blessing Musarababi took two wickets each with Richard Ngarava and Wellington Masakadza taking one each.

Wanindu Hasaranga will lead the hosts while Sikandar Raza will lead Zimbabwe. Interestingly, Zimbabwe won their first-ever T20I against Sri Lanka by winning the second T20I. Hasaranga picked up his career-best seven-wicket haul in the third ODI making a comeback after an injury layoff.

The two teams have played 64 ODIs with the Lankans winning 49 games and the Aftercan nation 12. Three matches have ended in no result with the first ODI being the latest. The two teams have played just five T20Is with Zimbabwe recently picking up their first-ever win. Sri Lanka have won 14 of the 20 Test matches played between the two sides while Zimbabwe hasn’t won any to date.

The visitors have pushed Zimbabwe back in both the SL vs ZIM T20Is. In the first T20I, Sri Lanka won off the final over of the game, and in the second, Sri Lanka could not prevent Zimbabwe from putting up a strong performance.

Talking about Colombo as a venue in recent times, it has been prone to rain during the Asia Cup 2023. The first ODI was also washed out and there have been rain interruptions in the following games as well. It is one of the oldest venues in international cricket and one that has seen many close encounters.

SL vs ZIM Weather Report Live Today And Pitch Report Of R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo Stadium – 3rd T20I, 2024

Colombo is amongst the oldest cricket stadiums in the world. It has hosted 164 ODIs and 57 T20I matches. 23 matches have been won by the team batting first and 33 by the team chasing. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board headed by Chief Selector Upul Tharanga named three different captains for three different formats. Dhananjaya de Silva was named the new Test captain, Kusal Mendis the ODI captain, and Wanindu Hasaranga the new T20I captain.

The SL vs ZIM third and final T20I will be played in Colombo on January 18. Zimbabwe won the second T20I by four wickets to level the series. The final T20I starts at 7 pm IST. The team that wins the match wins the series.

Zimbabwe needed 20 runs to win the second T20I with Luke Jongwe starring with bat and ball for the visitors. They chased down a stiff target of 174 in the penultimate ball of the innings. Jongwe scored an unbeaten 25 of 12 balls after taking 2.23 with the ball to star in Zimbabwe’s memorable win. This was Zimbabwe’s first-ever T20I win against Sri Lanka.

Earlier in the game, Sri Lanka were tottering at 27/4 inside the first five overs. Charith Asalanka (69) and Angelo Mathews (66*) then fought back to take the Lankans to a respectable total. Blessing Muzarabani took 2/36 with the ball as well.

For Zimbabwe, Craig Ervine the ODI skipper scored 70 off 54 balls to anchor the innings. Brian Bennett playing his fifth T20I scored a crucial 25 off 20 balls. In the end. Jongwe and Clive Madande (15*) added an unbeaten 33-run stand to win the game for Zimbabwe and take it to the decider.

Wanindu Hasaranga the new T20I skipper for Sri Lanka took 1 for 41 with the ball. Like Pakistan. Sri Lanka also changed their leadership after a sorry World Cup. Dasun Shanaka was sacked as white-ball cap[tain with the SLC appointing Kusal Mendis as the ODI captain, Hasaraga as the T20I captain, and Dhananjaya de Silva as the Test captain.

Sri Lanka won the first T20I chasing a modest score of 144 which was another tiht contest. The Islanders have been pushed to the wall in both the games with Zimbabwe performing well in both the SL vs ZIM T20Is.

Sri Lanka’s T20I squad for the three-match series was announced with Wanindu Hasaranga to lead the side. Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews was recalled into the side for the first time since 2021. Hasaranga did not play the first two ODIs.

Zimbabwe too have named their T20I side with Sikandar Raza to lead the side. He was named the 2023 T20I Player Of The Year having scored over 500 runs and taken 17 wickets last year. Craig Ervine the ODI skipper will play as a specialist batter in T20Is for Zimbabwe. The visitors thus broke the deadlock and notched up their first T20I win.

Both Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe had a lean 2023. The Islanders lost the Asia Cup final and had a forgetful 2023 World Cup winning just two matches in the tournament. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 and lost to Uganda in the African regional qualifier.

Zimbabwe all-rounder Luke Jongwe opened up about his match-winning performance against Sri Lanka in the second T20I. He said it was a special feat for him as he achieved it against his role model Angelo Mathews.

Luke Jongwa was the shining light for Zimbabwe in the second T20I against Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. In the chase of, 174 runs, Zimbabwe were down and dusted as they lost wickets in quick succession after a fierce start, thanks to Craig Ervine (70).

Sri Lanka looked clear favorites to win the game as Zimbabwe needed 30 runs off the last two overs. Things got more in their favor after Dilshan Madushanka gave only 10 runs in the penultimate over. With 20 runs needed in the last over and all the big names in the hut, no one gave visitors a chance to win.

However, Luke Jongwe stood tall for his team and made sure that he made everyone remember his name. Angelo Mathews bowled a no-ball on the first delivery and the batter slammed it for a six and then followed it up with a boundary on a free hit.

Luke Jongwe then almost sealed the game for his team when he hit six on the next delivery as well. In the end, Clive Madane landed the final blow and sealed the game for his team. But all the credit went to Jongwe with the way he took veteran Mathews to cleaners.

While talking about his performance, Luke Jongwe revealed that Angelo Mathews is his childhood hero and used to be on his phone’s wallpaper. He added that he went through a lot of emotions after his heroics. Speaking during the press conference, he stated:

“Doing it against Sri Lanka, considering Angelo was one of my role models growing up, is even better. That’s special. He used to be my wallpaper when I was a kid. He was still using Gray-Nicolls gear at that time.

“I was still a youngster. On Facebook, at one point he was my profile picture. There’s too much happening for me today. There are a lot of emotions. I’m just grateful to God.”

SL vs ZIM: Wait until the last over – Luke Jongwe on his plans

Luke Jongwe further opened up about his plans for the chase. He said that he was aware of the fact that Sri Lanka needed one over from a non-regular bowler and he needed to stay calm. He explained:

“I knew they needed one over from someone, because Chameera was done and Madushanka was done.

“I told myself I wasn’t going to take a risk against them, and wait until the last over, and give myself the best chance.”

The series between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe stays leveled at 1-1 with both the teams winning one each. The stage is now set for the series decider third T20I, which will take place on 18th January. Both the teams would be eager to put in a good performance and clinch the series.

Sri Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood lost his cool after Maheesh Theekshana dropped an easy catch in the last over of the second SL vs ZIM T20I in Colombo on Tuesday (January 16).

The match looked all but over for Zimbabwe when Angelo Mathews came to bowl the final over. The visitors needed 20 runs in the last over and Sri Lanka looked destined to win the game. However, Luke Jongwe and Clive Madande had other ideas.

Mathews began the final over by overstepping and Jongwe hit a six on the same delivery to bring down the equation to 13 runs from 6 balls. On the resulting free-hit, Jongwe hit a four to leave his team needing 9 runs from the last 5 deliveries.

Chris Silverwood loses cool:

On the second ball of the over, Jongwe hit the former Sri Lanka captain for another six to bring down the equation to 3 runs from the last 4 balls. Mathews finally bowled a dot delivery to keep his team’s chances alive. On the fourth ball of the over, Sri Lanka had the chance to take command of the situation when Jongwe mistimed a slog.

The ball went high in the air and Maheesh Theekshana had all the time in the world to steady himself and complete an easy catch. However, the Sri Lanka spinner fumbled the opportunity and ended up dropping the Zimbabwe player, turning a seemingly straightforward catch into a missed chance.

As soon as he dropped the catch, the cameras turned towards the Sri Lankan dressing room where Chris Silverwood was seen losing his cool. The former England head coach failed to keep his emotions under control and was seen slamming his notebook on the floor in anger.

Watch:

Zimbabwe went on to win the game by 4 wickets. With 2 runs needed off the last 2 balls, Madande slogged a low toss over the deep mid-wicket boundary for a six to seal the memorable win in style.

The win is Zimbabwe’s first win on the tour. They lost the three-match ODI series 2-0 before suffering a 3-wicket defeat in the first T20I. The third and final T20I is scheduled to take place on Thursday (January 18).

After last ball thriller between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in the first T20I, both the teams took the field again on Tuesday (16th January). The second match between the teams took place at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday (16th January).

The coin went in favour of Zimbabwe and they opted to field first. Their decision to bowl first paid off incredibly well as they left Sri Lanka tottering at 27/4. Big names in Pathum Nissanka (1), Kusal Mendis (4), Kusal Perera (0) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (16) back in the hut.

However, it was then that vice-captain Charith Asalanka and veteran Angelo Mathews joined hands. They led the rescue charge and bailed the team out of trouble with their stellar performance with the bat that put the opposition under pressure.

While Asalanka ended with the knock of 69 runs off 39 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes, Mathews ended with the unbeaten knock of 66 runs off 51 balls. He also hit 6 fours and 2 sixes in his innings and when the time they were batting, Zimbabwe had no answers to the onslaught by them.

The duo added 118 runs together for the 5th wicket helping Sri Lanka post a decent total on the board. Dasun Shanaka (9) hit a vital boundary in the end that powered Sri Lanka to a total of 173 runs in their quota of 20 overs.

For Zimbabwe, Blessing Muzarabani picked two wickets along with Luke Jongwe, who also bagged two scalps. Richard Ngarava and Wellington Masakadza also picked one scalp each as they helped their team restrict opponents under a total of 180 runs.

Zimbabwe’s chase started on a decent note as they added 22 runs for the opening stand before Tinashe Kamunhukamwe (12) was removed by Dilshan Madushanka. Craig Ervine on the other end continued playing his shots and made sure that he kept his team in the hunt.

Brian Bennett, who came at No.3, played a vital hand of 25 runs but couldn’t carry on as he was removed by Maheesh Theekshana. He along with Ervine added 74 runs for the partnership and it looked like Zimbabwe was all set for victory in the second game.

However, after his wicket, Zimbabwe lost wickets in clusters and in no time was reduced to 112/4. Craig Ervine notched up a half-century and played well but he got out at a crucial time and perished for 70 runs in the 17th over of the game.

For Sri Lanka, Maheesh Theekshana and Dushmantha Chameera picked two wickets each. Whereas Dilshan Madushanka and Wanindu Hasaranga picked one wicket each. The series between the two teams is now levelled and the stage is all set for the mouth-watering decider.

In SL vs ZIM 3rd ODI, Zimbabwe opted to bat first once again. The match was reduced to 27 over per side. This time, they crumbled against Sri Lanka bowlers, getting bowled out for 96. Wanindu Hasaranga picked 7 wickets to showcase an impeccable spin attack.

Sri Lanka spin sensation Wanindu Hasaranga made a spectacular comeback. He took his career-best figure of 7/19 in his return to international cricket as Sri Lanka demolished Zimbabwe by 8 wickets in a rain-affected encounter. Sri Lanka also sealed the ODI series with a 2-0 victory as they won the last two games of the three-match ODI series with the first one being washed out in rain.

Wanindu Hasaranga came to bowl in the ninth over of the reduced 27-over match and took the wicket of Takudzwanashe Kaitano with the final ball of his first over. He then went on to take another three scalps in his next couple of overs. Zimbabwe struggled to play his googly as the spinner claimed three of the final four wickets to restrict Zimbabwe to just 96.

Wanindu Hasaranga missed out on a lot of international cricket due to his injury. He was not available during the Asia Cup and the ICC Cricket World Cup. Wanindu Hasaranga sustained a hamstring injury during the Lanka Premier League due to which he was out of cricketing action for four months. He underwent a hamstring surgery in October 2023 and completed his rehabilitation.

Wanindu Hasaranga’s figure of 7/19 is the fifth-best ODI figure in the history. He was brilliant with his googlies against the Zimbabwe batters and bamboozled them with his bowling. Hasaranga was the highest wicket-taker and the highest run-scorer in the Lanka Premier League 2023 and he has carried his form even after missing out on cricketing action for four months.

Wanindu Hasaranga Joins The Elite List Of Glenn McGrath And Shahid Afridi

With his best figure of 7/19 against Zimbabwe in the third ODI, Wanindu Hasaranga joins the elite list of players to take seven wickets in an ODI innings while giving less than 20 runs. Only four other bowlers have achieved this feat before him. It is also the second-best figure by a Sri Lankan in ODI cricket as he goes past Muttiah Muralitharan’s 7/30 against India.

Here Are The Top Five Best Figures In ODI Cricket:

  1. Chaminda Vass: Chaminda Vass has the best-registered bowling figure in ODI history as he took 8/19 against Zimbabwe in 2001
  2. Shahid Afridi: Shahid Afridi took 7/12 against West Indies in 2013 which is the second-best figure in ODI cricket.
  3. Glenn McGrath: With a figure of 7/15 Australia’s Glenn McGrath has the third-best overall and the best figure in ODI World Cup history which he took against Namibia in 2003.
  4. Rashid Khan: Afghanistan’s spin veteran comes fourth in this list as he took 7/18 against West Indies in 2017.
  5. Wanindu Hasaranga: The latest entry in this list and the second Sri Lankan, Wanindu Hasaranga with a figure of 7/19 against Zimbabwe in 2024 has the fifth-best figure in ODI history.

Sri Lanka will now face Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series and Wanindu Hasaranaga has been named as the captain of the Sri Lankan team against Zimbabwe. This will be the first time Hasaranga will be leading the national team. After a terrible ODI World Cup campaign where they finished ninth among ten teams, Sri Lanka is in a rebuilding phase.

After the nail-bitter second ODI between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the two teams lock horns with each other in the third game. The series decider between the teams took place at the same venue in Colombo.

Zimbabwe won the toss and opted to bat first. But they didn’t get the kind of start they wanted. Their decision to bat first, backfired as Sri Lanka bowlers were all over them upfront. Joylord Gumboe along with Takudzwanashe Kaitano negotiated the tricky phase well at the start.

While Joylord Gumboe scored 29 runs off 34 balls, Takudzwanashe added 17 runs off  24 balls. The duo added 43 runs for the opening partnership but the introduction of spin turned the fortunes for Zimbabwe as they looked clueless.

Wanindu Hasaranga drew the first blood for his team as he sent Takudzwanashe packing and then in his next over struck twice to remove Joylord Gumboe and Craig Evans for a duck. The rain then played the spoilsport and halted the game for a while.

The rain then forced umpires to curtail the game and the match was reduced to 27 overs per side. The play after the rain break then didn’t go in favor of Zimbabwe as Sri Lanka spinners were all over them and made them look clueless.

Wanindu Hasaranga picked up seven wickets on his comeback game and ran through the opposition’s batting lineup. His sensational bowling performance helped Sri Lanka bundle out Zimbabwe for just 96 runs. Apart from him, Dilshan Madushanka, Maheesh Theekshana, and Janith Liyanage picked one wicket each.

For Zimbabwe, no batter couldn’t go past the 20-run mark apart from Gumbie. It was a torrid display of batting from them as they were bundled out inside 23 overs. They had no answers to the questions put up by the Sri Lanka bowlers and would be livid with the way they batted in the game.

Despite the target being very low, Zimbabwe came out with a positive intent. Richard Ngarva removed Avishka Fernando for a four-ball duck. But after that captain Kusal Medis played a sensational innings and took the game away from the opposition.

Wellington Masakadza removed Shevon Daniel for 12 runs to 28 balls but at that time game was far away from them. Skipper Mendis scored a blistering half-century and ended with the knock of unbeaten 66 runs off 51 balls. Sadeera Samarawickrama (14*) played a vital hand as Sri Lanka completed a comfortable 8-wicket win.

With the win, Sri Lanka won the series as well. The first match between the teams was washed out due to rain. The second game was a nail-biter but the hosts clinched the match with 2 wickets in hand. The series went on the island nation by a margin of 2-0. The focus now shifts towards the three-match T20I series, which will begin from 14th January.

Brief scores

Zimbabwe: 96/10 (Joylord Gumboe 29; Wanindu Hasaranga 7/19)

Sri Lanka: 97/2 (Kusal Mendis 66*; Wellington Masakadza 1/15)

Zimbabwe takes on Sri Lanka in the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka on January 11. This is the final ODI before both teams play a three-match T20I series. The visitors lost the second ODI and need to win this to level the series.

Zimbabwe were bowled out for 208 in the second ODI. However, their bowlers led by Richard Ngarava made the chase a difficult task for the Sri Lankan batters. He took a fifer but the Sri Lankan lower-order managed to take the team over the line.

Heading into the decider, the Zimbabweans need to bat a lot better and give their team a substantial total to defend. Many of the batters within the squad do not have much experience playing ODI cricket. Skipper Craig Ervine and T20I skipper Sikandar Raza are just the two players with over 100 games in this format for the side.

Zimbabwe are placed 11th in the ODI rankings and not playing its best cricket at the moment. They failed to qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as they lost to Uganda in the African qualifier.

After a below-par bowling performance in the first ODI, before the match was washed out, The visitors made a good comeback with the ball in the second innings.

They need a clinical performance to level the series with their experienced players needing to rise to the occasion. The African nation has not had too much success against Sri Lana. They won just 12 out of 63 ODIs against the Islanders and are yet to win a T20I and a Test match.

Sri Lanka chased down 208 in the 49th over in the second ODI. Janith Liyanage scored 95 batting at number four. The tailenders then ensured Sri Lanka got over the line. Maheesh Theekshana and Dushmantha Chameera scored 18 while Jeffrey Vandersay scored an unbeaten 19 to take the hosts over the line.

The weather forecast for the third ODI does not look good. There is an 85-90 percent chance of rain that might play spoilsport. There are thunderstorms expected in the evening. Rain also played spoilsport in the first ODI, and the third ODI might be washed out.

The SL vs ZIM third ODI decider will be played on Thursday, January 11, 2024. Sri Lanka are leading the series 1-0 after winning the second match by two wickets. The first ODI was rained out in Colombo.

Sri Lanka were made to work hard by the Zimbabwe bowlers chasing down 2009 for victory. They lost 8 wickets and won the match with six balls to spare. The tailenders took Sri Lanka to a win after Janith Liyanage’s 95 off 127 deliveries.

Dusmantha Chameera (18*), Jeffrey Vandersay (18*), and Maheesh Theekshana (18) scored crucial runs to take Sri Lanka to a victory. That was Sri Lanka’s 48th ODI win over in 63 ODIs. Wanindu Hasaranga did not play the first two ODIs against Zimbabwe.

They are led by a new captain Kusal Mendis who was announced as the full-time ODI skipper by Chairman of Selectors Upul Tharanga. Wanindu Hasaranga was named the new T20I skipper while Dhananjaya de Silva was the new T20I skipper. The leggie will return to the squad for the T20I series.

Zimbabwe met Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup qualifiers earlier this year. They lost 2-1 to Sri Lanka the last time they toured Sri Laka in 2021-22 Zimbabwe won the the previous ODI series between the two sides in the 2017-28 season 3-2 which was also played in Sri Lanka. The visitors are led by Ciarg Ervine.

The weather forecast for the SL vs ZIM decider in Colombo does not look good. There are almost an 85 percent chance of rain that might play spoilsport. Rain washed out the first ODI and in case the same happens, Sri Lanka will win the series 1-0.

SL vs ZIM Match Preview- 3rd ODI, 2024

Sri Lanka

Batting remains a concern for Sri Lanka after how they performed in the second ODI. They were pushed to the brink of defeat before the tailenders rescued them. Skipper Kusal Mendis who himself scored just 17 in the second T20I needs to walk the batlk with the bat. The absence of an experienced batter like Angelo Mathews was evident in the series so far.

The bowling has looked good so far in both the pace and spin departments. Dunith Wellalage, Akila Dananjaya, and Pramod Madushan were benched in the second ODI. It will be interesting to see if any of them get a chance to play in the decider. Chameera and Madushanka have formed a good pace-bowling pair. They just need to be careful with their injury concerns. Batter Pathum Nissanka was ruled out of the series with reports of dengue and is doubtful for the T20I series as well.

Sri Lanka Squad

Pathum Nissanka, Nuwanidu Fernando, Kusal Mendis(w/c), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Akila Dananjaya, Avishka Fernando, Pramod Madushan, Janith Liyanage, Sahan Arachchige, Dilshan Madushanka

Zimbabwe

These visitors were inconsistent with the bat in the second ODI. Apart from skipper Ervine none of the other batters looked at home with the conditions. Their skill and temperament as batters were tested by the Lankan bowlers. In the decider, they need to score a substantial total with the bat to give their bowlers something to defend.

Their bowlers bowled well led by Richard Ngarava. Sikandar Raza took two wickets with the ball and scored just one with the bat. The other bowlers backed Ngarava well in the match. In the decider, Zimbabwean bowlers need to replicate the bowling performance that they had in the second ODI.

Zimbabwe Squad

Craig Ervine(C), Joylord Gumbie(wk), Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, Milton Shumba, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Sikandar Raza, Clive Madande, Luke Jongwe, Wellington Masakadza, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, Faraz Akram, Tony Munyonga, Tapiwa Mufudza, Ryan Burl

Colombo is all set to host the third SL vs ZIM ODI on January 11, Thursday. The match starts at 2.30 pm IST. The first ODI was rained out while the second ODI saw a complete game. However, there is always a forecast of rain surrounding the venue.

Colombo as a venue hosted Asia Cup 2023 matches and rain played spoilsport in many matches. Heading into this game, there are 85 percent chances of rain throughout the day. A washout will mean Sri Lanka will win the series courtesy of their win in the second ODI.

Zimbabwe were bowled out for 208 with Maheesh Theekshana taking four wickets. Dusmantha Chameera and Jeffrey Vandersay took two each. For the visitors skipper Craig Ervine top-scored with 82.

Zimbabwe bowlers troubled the Sri Lankan batters and made it hard for them to chase a relatively lowish total. The hosts were 8 down before the lower order contributed to the team’s win. This was after Janith Liyanage scored 85 off 127 deliveries. Chameera (18*), Theekshana (18*), and Vandersay (19) scored key runs in the lower order to take Sri Lanka to win and lead the series 1-0.

The two teams play a three-match T20I series after the end of the ODI series. The T20I series will also be played in Colombo. The two teams will have different captains. Wanindu Hasaranga will lead the hosts while Sikandar Raza will lead Zimbabwe. Interestingly, Zimbabwe are yet to win a T20I match against the Lankans. The Sri Lankan leggie did not play the first two ODIs. It will be interesting to see if he plays the third ODI.

Craig Ervine will lead Zimbabwe. They lost an ODI series against Ireland heading into this series. Ervine the skipper will need support from his senior players if they are to beat Sri Lanka at home. They have not played top-class ODI teams in recent times and tackling the Sri Lankan bowling attack might be an issue for the side as it turned out in the last game. Zimbabwe will need to bat a lot better if they are to challenge Sri Lanka in the decider.

The two teams have played 63 ODIs with the Lankans winning 48 games and the Aftercan nation 12. Three matches have ended in no result with the first ODI being the latest. The two teams have played just three T20Is with Sri Lanka winning all three. Sri Lanka have won 14 of the 20 Test matches played between the two sides while Zimbabwe hasn’t won any to date.

SL vs ZIM Weather Report Live Today And Pitch Report Of R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo Stadium – 3rd ODI, 2024

Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe go head to head in the third SL vs ZIM ODI in Colombo. This match marks the end of the series with the Lankans leading 1-0 heading into the decider.

Zimbabwe were bowled out for 208 in the second ODI with skipper Craig Ervine scoring 82. Joylord Gumbie scored 30 while Milton Shumba scored 26 while batting at three. Ryan Burl scored 31 at number five.

The Zimbabwean bowlers then made the chase difficult for the Sri Lankan batters. Richard Ngarava took 5/32. However, after Janith Liyanage scored 95, the likes of Maheesh Theekshana (18), Dusmantha Chameera (19), and Jeffrey Vandersay (19) hung on and took Sri Lanka to a win.

Thus this is the decider between the two teams with Zimbabwe having the opportunity to level the series while Sri Lanka looking to win it at home. Both teams then play a three-match T20I series led by different captains. Sri Lanka will be led by Wanindu Hasaranga while Zimbabwe will be led by Sikandar Raza who was the 2023 T20I Player Of The Year.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board headed by Chief Selector Upul Tharanga named three different captains for three different formats. Dhananjaya de Silva was named the new Test captain, Kusal Mendis the ODI captain, and Wanindu Hasaranga the new T20I captain. Mendis is leading the ODI side and has a chance to win the ODI series.

Zimbabwe, on the other hand, will be led by Ciarg Ervine. He has experienced players to fall back on as well Sikandar Raza, Blessing Musarabani, Ryan Burl, Luke Jongwe and Richard Ngarava form the core of the Zimbabwe side. The experienced bowlers performed well in the second ODI and need to replicate their performance to give the visitors a chance to level the series.

The side failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 after playing the main round in the T20 World Cup 2022. They defeated Pakistan to begin their campaign in 2022 but faded out. In the 2024 qualifiers, they lost to Uganda in the African qualifiers as they missed out on a shot at qualification.

Zimbabwe’s failure to qualify for the major event highlights their inconsistent run as a team. They missed out on qualifying for the ODI World Cup last year in India as well. They last played an ODI World Cup back in 2015.

Speaking about SL vs ZIM head to head,  both teams have played 63 ODIs with the Lankans winning 48 matches and the Zimbabweans 12. Zimbabwe are yet to win a T20I and a Test match against Sri Lanka. With the T20I series lined up next, Zimbabwe have the chance to win their first T20I against the Islanders.

The SL vs ZIM third and final ODI will be played in Colombo on January 11. The match starts from 2.30 pm IST with the hosts leading the series 1-0 after their win in the second ODI by two wickets.

Sri Lanka chased down 209 with just two wickets to spare with Janith Liyanage scoring 95 off 127 balls to keep the Lankans in the hunt. Maheesh Theekshana (18), Dushmantha Chameera (19), and Jeffrey Vandersay (19) played crucial knocks to take the hosts to victory in the 49th over.

Zimbabwe bowlers made the best out of a low total to defend as they took the match right down to the end. Richard Ngarava took 5/32 to make the chase difficult for the Islanders. Sikandar Raza took two for 32. The Zimbabwean batters were bowled out for just 208 inside 45 overs. Craig Ervine the skipper top-scored with 82 while there were other medical contributions.

Maheesh Theekshana took 4/31 with the ball. Chameera took Vandersay took two each as Dilshan Madushanka took one. A win for Sri Lanka will give them an ODI series win to kick off 2024. Meanwhile, a win for Zimbabwe will help them level the series.

The way the Zimbabwean bowlers bounced back in the game, this match too can be a close game if they replicate their bowling performance. The batters, however, will have to pull up their socks and give their bowlers a substantial total to defend.

Both teams play a three-match T20I series after the ODI series is over. The T20Is will also be played in Colombo.

The African nation are yet to win in T20Is against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka began 2024 with a home series against Zimbabwe in January. They will host the African nation for three ODIs and as many T20Is. It will be followed by a series against Afghanistan, consisting of one Test, three ODIs, and three T20Is. The Islanders will then head to Bangladesh for an all-format tour.

Sri Lanka Cricket Team on Tuesday (9th January) announced the strong 16-member squad for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe. Leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga will be captaining the team with Charith Asalanka being his deputy.

Veteran Angelo Matthews has returned to the team after a gap of almost two years. He last played for the team in the game against West Indies in 2021. Apart from him, Akila Dananjaya too has been recalled into the team after a gap of two years, having played last against South Africa in 2021.

Sri Lanka will be hosting Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series. The first match will be played on 14th January followed by the second game scheduled to be played on 16th January. The focus will then shift to the last game, which will be played on 18th January. All three games will be played at the same venue in RPICS, Colombo.

Pathum Nissanka has been drafted into the team as well. But his availability will be subject to the fitness. The batter was down with dengue and was ruled out of the ODI series against Zimbabwe. Management would be hoping that he recovers soon and takes the field.

Dhananjaya de Silva, Mathews, and Dasun Shanaka are the all-rounders in the team whereas Kusal Mendis, Asalanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, and Kusal Perera are the desired batters in the team. Dilshan Madushanka, Nuwan Thushara, Matheesha Pathirana, and Dushmantha Chameera are the pacers who made it into the squad.

Sri Lanka’s spin department will be the key for them. Skipper Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dananjaya will be taking charge of the ball. The series will mark the beginning of a new essay in the Sri Lanka Cricket.

The series will be crucial for them in the context of the ICC T20 World 2024 and also they would be hoping to get their combination right. It will be a great opportunity for them to identify the players that they want to take to the USA and Caribbean for the World Cup.

The last few months have been difficult for the Sri Lanka Cricket. Be it performance-wise or external issues, it hasn’t been great for them. However, they would be hoping to rejuvenate themselves, get back on track, and make themselves a strong candidate to win the T20 World Cup.

Sri Lanka produced good performances in the ODIs against Zimbabwe. The first match was washed out due to the rain but they had a great outing with the bat. In the second game, they defeated the opposition by 2 wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the series.

They would be hoping to continue the momentum in the T20I series and would want to begin their preparations for the T20 World Cup on a high note.

In a recent development, the Bangladesh Cricket Board is planning to reschedule the National team’s 2-match Test series against Zimbabwe on home soil. The measure is being considered by the BCB authorities in order to give the team some extra time to prepare for the upcoming 20-team ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, as per Cricbuzz.

The mega T20 event is slated to start from June 1 onwards with hosts USA taking on neighbors Canada in the opening game. Bangladesh have been drawn into Group D alongside teams like South Africa, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, and Nepal.

The Bangla Tigers will play their first match of the T20 WC 2024 against one-time winners Sri Lanka on June 8 at the Grand Prairie Stadium. Their second game will see them go against South Africa 2 days later before ending the group stage with clashes against Netherlands on 13 June and Nepal on 16 June.

The top 2 teams from each of the 4 groups will proceed to the next round i.e. Super 8 (virtual QFs) before the semi-finals and final on 29th June at Barbados. It will be an important event for Bangladesh whose best performance in the tournament came in 2016 when they finished as Group winners.

They have never been to a T20 WC semi-final and it is something that the management will be keen to improve in the upcoming edition. That is why the BCB is mulling over rescheduling the Test series against Zimbabwe, which is also key for their hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final in 2025.

Jalal Yunus, the BCB Chair of operations, said that Bangladesh will not snub the Test series against Zimbabwe but they are eager to push the dates beyond the T20 WC. “It is not a fact that we are going to abandon the two Tests against Zimbabwe and certainly we will play the two Tests (against Zimbabwe) but when we will play that Test is something we need to decide,” Yunus told Cricbuzz.

Bangladesh Cricket Board Planning To Send The Team To USA Weeks Prior To The T20 WC

Bangladesh’s preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup will virtually start from 19th January through the Bangladesh Premier League. The domestic event will be important for them to check and see the form of its contracted players and whether some new faces will be introduced or not.

Moreover, the BCB wants to send their team to the USA weeks before the start of the tournament so that they can adapt to the conditions over there at the expense of pushing the Zimbabwe Test series further beyond its original dates. They will then host Sri Lanka for 3 T20Is-ODIs and 2 Tests before the other home series against Zimbabwe.

Head coach of the National team, Chandika Hathurusingha is expected to have a meeting with the BCB hierarchy in which they will be deciding when to host Zimbabwe, before or after the T20 World Cup.

Zimbabwe takes on Sri Lanka in the second ODI in Colombo on Monday, January 8. The match starts at 2.30 pm IST. The African nation narrowly escaped a defeat in the first ODI as rain came to their rescue.

Craig Ervine will lead Zimbabwe. He is amongst their most experienced players in the side. The other senior player is Sikandar Raza who is also the T20I skipper of the side. The African nation are touring Sri Lanka for a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series.

Zimbabwe are placed 11th in the ODI rankings and not playing its best cricket at the moment. They failed to qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as they lost to Uganda in the African qualifier.

Given how their bowlers performed in the first ODI, their tour is only going to get tougher from here on. If they are to challenge Sri Lanka in their own backyard, they need to perform better with both bat and ball.

The African nation has not had too much success against Sri Lana. They won just 12 out of 61 ODIs against the Islanders and are yet to win a T20I and a Test match. Eyes will be on the senior players from Zimbabwe to turn the tide of the national cricket team.

Since the first ODI was not completely played, Zimbabwe might just play the same side in the second ODI as well. However, given the performance of some of their bowlers, the think tank might want to replace them with the more experienced pacers.

Colombo is all set to host the SL vs ZIM 2nd ODI on Monday, January 8, 2024. The first ODI was rained out on Saturday. The next two games now are must-win for both teams.

Zimbabwe escaped a defeat as rain saved them in the first ODI. Chasing 274 to win, The visitors were struggling at 5/2. With the team score on 12, the heavens opened up and relentless rains meant that the first ODI was finally washed out.

There is a prediction of rain for the second ODI as well with almost up to 70- percent chance of rain. In case rain plays spoilsport in the second ODI, there are chances that it also might get washed out. The city of Colombo saw a lot of rain during last year’s Asia Cup as well.

Sri Lanka kicks off their 2024 season with a home series against Zimbabwe. They endured a forgetful World Cup campaign and now will look to start afresh under a new leader and a new management. Heading into this ODI series, Sri Lanka are placed seventh in the ICC ODI rankings while Zimbabwe are 11th.

They are led by a new captain in Kusal Mendis who was announced as the full-time ODI skipper by Chairman of Selectors Uul Tharanfa. Wanindu Hasaranga was named the new T20I skipper while Dhananjaya de Silva was the new T20I skipper.

SL vs ZIM Match Preview- 2nd ODI, 2024

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka after the rained-out first ODI will look to field the same XI in the second ODI. Pathum Nissanka is already ruled out of the series with reports of dengue. Wanindu Hasaranga did not play the first ODI . He missed the World Cup with a hamstring injury and looks doubtful for the second ODI as well. There are no further injury concerns.

Sri Lanka finished ninth in the ICC World Cup 2023 following which the board decided to change leadership across formats looking to breed in new squads of players across formats. A series win against Zimbabwe will be the perfect way to start the new season. Sri Lanka unlike Zimbabwe qualified for the T20 World Cup later this year in June.

The Sri Lankan squad is filled with experienced bowlers with Akila Dananjaya recalled into the side as well. He has played international cricket for Sri Laka in 2021. The pace attack is led by Dusmantha Chameera along with Pramod Madushan and Dilshan Madushanka for the company. Madushanka took the two Zimbabwe wickets in the last game. Eyes will be on whether Hasaranga returns to the playing XI for the second ODI.

Sri Lanka Squad

Pathum Nissanka, Nuwanidu Fernando, Kusal Mendis(w/c), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Akila Dananjaya, Avishka Fernando, Pramod Madushan, Janith Liyanage, Sahan Arachchige, Dilshan Madushanka

Zimbabwe

They might have avoided a defeat in the first ODI but their performance was not up to the mark. Their skipper Ciar Ervine was out for a duck and their lead boalers were very expensive. Zimbabwe needs to turn around their performance to win the second ODI.

Zimbabwe are playing under new coach Walter Chawaguta, and with the kind of bowling performance they showed in the first ODI, they will certainly be challenged by the hosts in home conditions. For them, eyes will be on their senior players, especially on Ervine and Sikandar Raza with the bat.

The lack of quality spin options is another major factor for Zimbabwe. Apart from Raza, Tapiwa Mufudza remained wicketless in the first ODI. Maybe then can bring in Wellington Masakadza in the second ODI.

Zimbabwe Squad

Craig Ervine(C), Joylord Gumbie(wk), Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, Milton Shumba, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Sikandar Raza, Clive Madande, Luke Jongwe, Wellington Masakadza, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, Faraz Akram, Tony Munyonga, Tapiwa Mufudza, Ryan Burl

Sri Lanka plays Zimbabwe in the second ODI in Colombo on Sunday. The first ODI ended in a no-result due to rain denying the Lankans from taking the lead in the series after being in a favorable position to win the match.

Sri Lanka scored 273 with the bat and had Zimbabwe reeling at 12/2 before the rain came down. Relentless rain meant that the umpires had to call off the match. This makes the last two games must-win games for both teams if the weather permits.

Charith Aslanka scored a ton and played an important role in taking Sri Lanka to that score. However, the weather conditions played spoilsport and the match ended with no-result. The weather conditions for the second ODI do not look good either with a 70 percent chance of rain.

Heading into this series, Sri Lanka are placed seventh in the ICC ODI rankings and their opponents Zimbabwe are placed 11th. The Lankasn endured a tough 2023 losing the Asia Cup 2023 final against India and then just winning two games in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Sri Lanka’s subdued performance in the World Cup led the thinktank to change captains across formats. The selection committee led by Upul Tharanga named three different cations across formats for the national team. Kusal Mendis will lead in ODIs, Wanindu Hasaranga in T20Is and Dhananjaya de Silva in T20Is.

With the first match getting washed out, Sri Lanka are unlikely to make any changes. Meanwhile, as per latest reports, Pathum Nissanka has been ruled out of the three-match series with dengue. There are doubts over Hasaranga’s availability for the second ODI as well after he missed the first game.

Janith Liyanage

Liyanage will bat at five. He scored 34 on his ODI debut but did not get his opportunity with the ball as the second innings was cut short due to rain. He should get a longer run in ODIs.

The weather forecast in Colombo for the second SL vs ZIM 2nd ODI does not look very good on Monday. The series did not start in the best possible way with the first ODI getting rained out. The last two games thus become must-win for both teams to win the series. The second ODI starts at 2.30 pm IST.

Sri Lanka, on the back of Charith Asalanka’s 101 scored 273/9 in their 50 overs. Kusal Mendis (46) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (41) were the other contributors. For Zimbabwe, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, and Faraz Akram took two wickets each.

Zimbabwe in their chase were down to 5/2 with Dilshan Madushanka dismissing skipper Craig Ervine and Tinashe Kamunhukamwe for ducks. Zimbabwe were 12.2 before the heavens opened up. Relentless rain meant that the umpires finally had to call the match off with the hosts denied a chance to win the match. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, had a lucky escape.

Sri Lanka kicks off their 2024 season at home against a relatively weaker Zimbabwe side. They have the team to go for the kill and win the clean sweep Zimbabwe in the white-ball formats.

Craig Ervine will lead Zimbabwe. They lost an ODI series against Ireland heading into this series. Ervine the skipper will need support from his senior players if they are to beat Sri Lanka at home. They have not played top-class ODI teams in recent times and tackling the Sri Lankan bowling attack might be an issue for the side.

Both of the teams did not have a good 2023. Sri Lanka endured one of their worst World Cup campaigns ever winning just two matches in the ICC World Cup 2023. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 losing the African regional qualifier against Uganda.

The two teams have played 62 ODIs with the Lankans winning 47 games and the Aftercan nation 12. Three matches have ended in no result with the first ODI being the latest. The two teams have played just three T20Is with Sri Lanka winning all three. Sri Lanka have won 14 of the 20 Test matches played between the two sides while Zimbabwe hasn’t won any to date.

Heading into the second ODI, Sri Lanka have a few concerns with their key players. Pathun Nissanka was ruled out of the series with reports of dengue. Wanindu Hasaranga was not part of the XI that was picked for the first ODI. He missed the World Cup due to a hamstring injury and was recently named the T20I skipper of the side.

SL vs ZIM Weather Report Live Today And Pitch Report Of R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo Stadium – 2nd ODI, 2024

The SL vs ZIM second ODI starts at 2.30 pm IST on Monday, January 8. There is a 70 percent chance of rain throughout the day. The temperature will be around 31 degrees during the day. By the afternoon, the weather conditions will be mainly cloudy and humid with a couple of t-storms as per Accuweather. Thus rain is expected to interrupt the game more than once.

Speaking about the pitch, it is a good one for batting with the team batting first having a better chance of winning the game. The pitch gets slower in the second innings with the spinners coming into their own. A score like first the first ODI will turn out to be a match-winning score.

Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe go head to head in the SL vs ZIM second ODI in Colombo on Monday, January 8. The first ODI ended in no result due to rain. The next two matches will be played on January 8 and 11. The two teams then play a T20I series between January 14-18

Charith Asalanka scored his third ODI to take Sri Lanka to 273/9 in their 50 overs. Kusal Mendis (46) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (41) also came up with crucial contributions. For Zimbabwe, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, and Faraz Akram took two wickets each.

Zimbabwe were given a double blow by Dilshan Madushanka in the chase as he removed Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and skipper Craig Ervine for ducks respectively and Zimbabwe were reduced to 5/2. However, the visitors were saved by rain when they had just added 12 runs for the loss of 2 wickets on the board in 4 overs. It then rained hard and eventually, the match ended in no result.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board headed by Chief Selector Upul Tharanga named three different captains for three different formats. Dhananjaya de Silva was named the new Test captain, Kusal Mendis the ODI captain, and Wanindu Hasaranga the new T20I captain. Mendis will lead Sri Lanka in the upcoming ODI series against Zimbabwe at home.

They are fresh off an ODI series defeat against Ireland in December 2023.

With teams like Uganda, Namibia, Nepal, PNG, Canada, Oman, and the Netherlands qualifying for the tournament, Zimbabwe’s failure to qualify for the major event highlights their inconsistent run as a team. They missed out on qualifying for the ODI World Cup last year in India as well. They last played an ODI World Cup back in 2015.

Speaking about heads to heads between Sri Land and Zimbabwe, both teams have played 62 ODIs with the Lankans winning 47 matches and the Zimbabweans 12. Three matches have ended in no result with the first ODI being the latest. The two teams have played just three T20Is with Sri Lanka winning all three. Sri Lanka have won 14 of the 20 Test matches played between the two sides. Zimbabwe is yet to win a Test match against Sri Lanka.

The SL vs ZIM 2nd ODI will be played in Colombo on Monday, January 8. The match starts at 2.30 pm IST after the first game ended with no result due to rain. The series thus started on the worst possible note.

However, rain saved Zimbabwe from a potential defeat in their first ODI as they were 12/2 and in a spot of bother chasing 274 for victory. Rain was expected to play spoilsport and it eventually turned out to be that way in Colombo. The second ODI now becomes a must-win for both teams.

Chairth Asalanka scored a century (101 off 95) to power the Lankan to a competitive total. Skipper Kusal Mendis scored 41 in his first knock as full-time captain. Sadeera Samarawickrama scored 41 and Janith Liyanage on his ODI debut scored 24.

Chasing down the target, Zimbabwe were given a double blow by Dilshan Madushanka as he removed Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and skipper Craig Ervine for a duck and Zimbabwe were reduced to 5/2. However, the visitors were saved by rain when they had just added 12 runs for the loss of 2 wickets on the board in 4 overs. The rain became stronger and eventually relentless forcing the match to be called off.

The second and third ODI will be played on January 8 and 11 in Colombo. The series then shifts to T20Is with a three-match series on January 14, 16 and 18. All the matches will be played in Colombo with weather predictions not very good meanwhile.

Zimbabwe are playing under new coach Walter Chawaguta and their performance in the first ODI certainly highlights their struggles against Sri Lanka.

The two teams have played 62 ODIs with the Lankans winning 47 games and the Aftercan nation 12. Three matches have ended in no result. The two teams have played just three T20Is with Sri Lanka winning all three. Sri Lanka have won 14 of the 20 Test matches played between the two sides. Zimbabwe are yet to win a Test match against Sri Lanka.

Rain gods favored Zimbabwe in the first ODI of the three-match series against Sri Lanka. Zimbabwe got off to a poor start while chasing down 274 runs and were 12/2 in four overs when rain interrupted the match and hence never really stopped, due to which the match had to be called off. The Zimbabwean have not been in top form off late but showed good bowling skills during the first innings.

Batting first at the R Premadasa Stadium, Sri Lanka were restricted to 273/9 by a young Zimbabwean bowling attack. The Sri Lankan team didn’t start off well as they lost its first wicket in the very first over in the name of Avishka Fernando for a duck. Richard Ngarava was the culprit behind the early blow to the hosts.

However, the duo of Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama put up 63 runs for the second wicket and tried to bring Sri Lanka back into the match. However, Richard Ngarava put a break on the partnership when he removed Samarawickrama for 41 runs off 31 balls in the ninth over.

Janith Liyanage then tried to stitch a partnership with Kusal Mendis and added 48 runs for the third wicket. However, Liyanage’s stint at the crease lasted for just 34 balls and he was removed by Faraz Akram for 24 runs. Kusal Mendis was looking at one end, but he also lost concentration and his innings ended at 46 runs courtesy of a run out from Sikandar Raza.

After the departure of the top four, Charith Asalanka proved to be the real storm for Zimbabwe as he hit 101 runs off 95 balls with five fours and four sixes. Asalanka added necessary runs with Sahan Arachige (11), Dasun Shanaka (8), Maheesh Theekshana (10) and Dushmantha Chameera (18).

At last, Charith Asalanka’s innings was ended by a run out by Clive Madande, whereas Jefferey Vandersay and Dilshan Madushanka were unbeaten at 3 runs respectively. At last, Sri Lanka could only reach 273/9 and it was a decent bowling performance by Zimbabwe.

SL vs ZIM Scorecard 1
PC: Sportzwiki

Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, and Faraz Akram picked up two wickets whereas Sikandar Raza ended the innings with one wicket.

The rain never really stopped and at last, the match had to be called with the next match all set to be played on January 8 at the same R Premadasa Stadium.

Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka both are not in great form in recent times and have gone through a lean patch in the last few times. Sri Lanka on one end displayed a below-average performance at the 2023 ODI World Cup, Zimbabwe were not able to make it through to the 2024 T20 World Cup after finishing third in the Africa region qualifier.

Zimbabwe are playing under new coach Walter Chawaguta, and with the kind of bowling performance they showed, they will certainly prove to be a tough challenge for Sri Lanka.

Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 273/9 (Charith Asalanka 101; Richard Ngarava 2/39)
Zimbabwe 12/2 (Milton Shubma 2*: Dilshan Madushanka 2/0)

Zimbabwe takes on Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series starting with the first ODI in Colombo on Saturday, January 6. The next two ODIs will be played on January 8 and 11. Both teams play a three-match T20I series after the end of the ODI series.

Zimbabwe are ranked 11 in the ICC ODI rankings heading into this series. They lost an ODI series against Ireland heading into this series as well. Zimbabwe failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup last year and has failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 as well.

They will be led by Craig Ervine who will need support from his senior players to win the ODI series against Sri Lanka at home. The African nation has not had too much success against Sri Lana. They won just 12 out of 61 ODIs against the Islanders and are yet to win a T20I and a Test match.

Eyes will be on the senior players from Zimbabwe to turn the tide of the national cricket team. Not playing regularly against the top teams has stagnated the growth of cricket in the country. Sikandar Raza, the T20I skipper is the most decorated cricketer in the team at the moment and eyes will be on him as to how he performs in this series.

Sri Lanka take on Zimbabwe in the first of the three-match ODI series in Colombo on Saturday, January 6. The match starts from 2.30 pm IST. The weather forecast for this match in Colombo does not look good.

Sri Lanka will be led by a new ODI skipper in Kusal Mendis. He has taken over from Dasun Shanaka as the full-time skipper. He also led Sri Lanka in a few games in the World Cup with Shanaka ruled out midway through the tournament.

Meanwhile, as per latest reports, Pathum Nissanka has been ruled out of the three-match series with dengue. There are doubts over Hasaranga’s availability for the first ODI as he is recovering from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the World Cup.

Sri Lanka’s experienced bowling attack is their real strength in this series. Akila Dananjaya has been recalled. Dusmantha Chameera will lead the pace attack with Dilshan Madushanka, Pramod Madushan is likely to pair up with him.

The SL vs ZIM first ODI will be played in Colombo on January 6. 2023 Saturday. The match starts at 2.30 pm IST. All three SL vs ZIM matches will be played in Colombo. Unfortunately, there is a rain prediction for the first ODI on Saturday.

Sri Lanka kicks off their 2024 season with a home series against Zimbabwe. They endured a forgetful World Cup campaign and now will look to start afresh under a new leader and a new management. Heading into this ODI series, Sri Lanka are placed seventh in the ICC ODI rankings while Zimbabwe is seventh.

The two teams have played 61 ODIs with the Lankans winning 47 games and the Aftercan nation 12. Two matches have ended in no result. The two teams have played just three T20Is with Sri Lanka winning all three. Sri Lanka have won 14 of the 20 Test matches played between the two sides. Zimbabwe are yet to win a Test match against Sri Lanka.

SL vs ZIM Match Preview- 1st ODI, 2024

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka will be led by Kusal Mendis in this ODI series. The selector committee headed by Upul Tharanga named three new captains across formats for the national team. Kusal Mendis will lead the ODI team. Wanincu Hasaranga has been named the T20I skipper and Dhananjaya de Silva the Test skipper. Tharanga said that he wanted to name one captain across formats but that would be too much to ask for given the current experience of the side.

Dasun Shanaka was axed from his leadership role in white-ball formats. Senior players Angelo Mathews and Dimuth Karunaratne were ignored for the role as the board wanted to invest in young players. Meanwhile, there are question marks over Hasaranga’s fitness for the series. He missed the World Cup with injury concerns and his participation in the three-match series is subject to fitness. The legspinner missed the World Cup due to a hamstring injury.

The Sri Lankan squad is filled with experienced bowlers with Akila Dananjaya recalled into the side as well. He has played international cricket for Sri Laka in 2021. The pace attack is led by Dusmantha Chameera along with Pramod Madushan and Dilshan Madushanka for company. He recently bagged his maiden IPL deal with Mumbai Indians. Meanwhile, latest reports say that Pathun Missanka the batter has been ruled out of the series due to a suspected Dengue infection. Shevon Daniel, the 19-year-old batter has been named as his replacement.

Sri Lanka Squad

Pathum Nissanka, Nuwanidu Fernando, Kusal Mendis(w/c), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Akila Dananjaya, Avishka Fernando, Pramod Madushan, Janith Liyanage, Sahan Arachchige, Dilshan Madushanka

Zimbabwe Squad

Zimbabwe are ranked 11th in ODIs heading into this series. They lost an ODI series against Ireland last month. The African nation failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 losing out in the African qualifier to Uganda. They played the T20 World Cup 2022 and missing out on the next World Cup shows the irregularities in their cricket in recent times.

They also failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup and have missed playing the last two World Cups. Craig Ervine will lead Zimbabwe with him needing his senior players to back him to challenge Sri Lanka at home. Eyes will be on Sikandar Raza the Zimbabwe T20I skipper to have a good series and step up with bat and ball.
Zimbabwe do not have a regular spinner apart from Raza and it will be interesting to see how they cope with that problem.

Zimbabwe Squad

Joylord Gumbie(w), Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, Milton Shumba, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Craig Ervine(c), Sikandar Raza, Clive Madande, Luke Jongwe, Wellington Masakadza, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, Faraz Akram, Tony Munyonga, Tapiwa Mufudza, Ryan Burl

Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium is all set to host the SL vs ZIM ODI matches in January. The first ODI will be played on January 6 followed by the next two on January 8 and 11 respectively. The two teams will also play a three-match T20I series after the ODI series.

Sri Lanka will be led by a new skipper in Kusal Mendis in the upcoming ODI series. The management led by Chief Selector Upul Tharanga named three new captains across formats for Sri Lanka. While Mendis was named the ODI skipper, Wanindu Hasaranga was named the new T20I skipper while Dhahnajaya de Silva the new Test skipper.

Sri Lanka kicks off their 2024 season at home against a relatively weaker Zimbabwe side. They have the team to go for the kill and win the cleansweep Zimbabwe in the white-ball formats.

Zimbabwe will be led by Craig Ervine. They lost an ODI series against Ireland heading into this series. Ervine the skipper will need support from his senior players if they are to beat Sri Lanka at home. They have not played top-class ODI teams in recent times and tackling the Sri Lankan bowling attack might be an issue for the side.

The two teams have played 61 ODIs with the Lankans winning 47 games and the Aftercan nation 12. Two matches have ended in no-result. The two teams have played just three T20Is with Sri Lanka winning all three. Sri Lanka have won 14 of the 20 Test matches played between the two sides. Zimbabwe are yet to win a Test match against Sri Lanka.

SL vs ZIM Weather Report Live Today And Pitch Report Of R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo Stadium – 1st ODI, 2024

The SL vs ZIM ODIs start from 2.30 pm IST. All the three ODIs will be played in Colombo. The venue has hosted over 160 ODIs with teams batting first winning 88 games and the team batting second winning 63. The average first innings score is close to 250 while the average second innings score is close to 200. Rain has been a major problem in hosting cricket matches in Sri Lanka in recent times.

The Asia Cup 2023 was a prime example. The tournament was held between August and September last year with rain playing spoilsport in many games. The SLC even thought about shifting some of the matches to Colombo while the final which was won by India also had a rain forecast.

Speaking about the SL vs ZIM 1st ODI, there are thunderstorms expected in the day and in the night. The weather around the day will be around 30 degrees and by the night will fall to 25 degrees. Humidity will be around 80 percent with more than 70 percent chance of rain in the evening. Rain has been a major factor in cricket matches getting shortened or abandoned at the venue.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board headed by Chief Selector Upul Tharanga named three different captains for three different formats. Mendis will lead Sri Lanka in the upcoming ODI series against Zimbabwe at home.

Charith Asalanka was named the new vice-captain of the ODI side. Former skipper Dasun Shanaka is a part of the ODI squad as is Hasaranga. The bowling attack looks good with plenty of options. Dunith Wellalage, Akila Dananjaya, Maheesh Theekshana form the spin core with Hasaranga. Dushmantha Chameera leads the pace attack alongside Dilshan Madushanka and Pramod Madushan.

They are fresh off an ODI series defeat against Ireland in December 2023.

The side failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 after playing the main round in the T20 World Cup 2022. They defeated Pakistan to begin their campaign in 2022 but faded out. In the 2024 qualifiers, they lost to Uganda in the African qualifiers as they missed out a shot on qualification.

Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe have played 61 ODIs with the Lankans winning 47 games and the African nation 12. Two matches have ended in no result. Sri Lanka kick off 2024 with a home ODI series against Zimbabwe. All three SL vs ZIM ODIs will be played in Colombo. The first ODI will be played on January 6 from 2.30 pm IST.

Sri Lanka as a cricketing nation has gone through a lot since the ODI World Cup 2023. The Islanders endured one of their Worst World Cup campaigns as they finished ninth with just two wins out of nine matches.

Their dismal performance saw the Sri Lankan Cricket Board make a whole lot of changes across three formats. Kusal Mendis was named the new ODI captain of Sri Lanka. The selectors looked over senior players like Angelo Mathews and Dimuth Karunaratne to name Mendis as the new ODI skipper. Wanindu Hasaranga was named the new T20I skipper of the side.

Sri Lanka will begin 2024 with a home series against Zimbabwe in January. They will host the African nation for three ODIs and as many T20Is. It will be followed by a series against Afghanistan, consisting of one Test, three ODIs, and three T20Is. The Islanders will then head to Bangladesh for an all-format tour.

Zimbabwe, meanwhile had a tough outing themselves as well. They failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 as they lost to Uganda in the African qualifier. Teams like Oman, Uganda, PNG, Scotland, Ireland, Namibia, Nepal, and Netherlands will all be a part of the T20 World Cup next year. Zimbabwe’s failure to qualify for the T20 World Cup later this year speaks volumes about the lack of quality cricketers in the country in the modern era.

After a meek performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 qualifiers, Zimbabwe lost an ODI series against Ireland leading up to this series. The first ODI ended in no result, after which The Irish team won the next two games to win the series.

The onus will be on the senior players to play to their best potential and challenge the Sri Lankan team who will be playing at home. Zimbabwe will be led by Craig Ervine with Sikandar Raza, Ryan Burl, Luke Jongwe, Richar Ngarava, and Blessing Musarabani all part of the ODI team that has been selected for the series.

In a major blow for Sri Lanka National Cricket Team, star batsman Pathum Nissanka has been ruled out of the ODI series against Zimbabwe National Cricket Team after getting hospitalised due to an infection.

The Zimbabwe National Cricket Team are all set to tour Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series. The series consists of a three-match ODI and a three-match T20I series. The ODIs will be played on January 06, 08, and 11 while T20I matches will be held on January 14, 16, and 18.

The venue for all the matches is the same as the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium (RPICS) in Colombo will be hosting the series

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) took to their official X (formerly known as Twitter) handle to make the announcement regarding the 25-year-old top-order batsman.

SLC stated that Pathum Nissanka is suspected to have a dengue infection and will miss the entirety of the ODI series against the Chevrons. If his illness does turn out to be dengue, he will also miss the T20I series.

“Team Update: Pathum Nissanka has been admitted to the hospital with a suspected dengue infection. Accordingly, the player is admitted for further management and will be out of the ODI series against Zimbabwe,” SLC stated in an official media release.

Shevon Daniel Named Pathum Nissanka’s Replacement In Sri Lanka ODI Squad

SLC has named the 19-year-old Shevon Daniel as the replacement for Pathum Nissanka in the squad for the ODI series against Zimbabwe.

“Cricket selectors have included Shevon Daniel in the ODI squad in place of Nissanka. #SLvZIM,” SLC further stated.

Daniel is a capped player as he has already played a T20I game for Sri Lanka. However, he is yet to make an appearance in the ODI format, which might come during the Zimbabwe series, but it is highly unlikely as Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis can open the innings for the side.

Even though the series of Sri Lanka is against Zimbabwe, they will very much miss the services of Pathum Nissanka as he has been a consistent performer for the team at the top of the order.

He had a great run in the year 2023 as he scored 1151 runs in ODIs at an amazing average of 44.26 and a strike rate of 87. Also, against the Chevrons he has an exceptional average of 82.33.

Sri Lanka recently underwent massive changes following their poor performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. There was a lot of controversy and the ICC even handed a ban to the SLC and the ICC U19 World Cup 2024 hosting rights were taken away from them. After a few days, ICC confirmed that the Lankan Lions would be allowed to play international cricket despite the ban.

Meanwhile, Dasun Shanaka has been sacked as the white-ball captain of the side and he has been replaced by Kusal Mendis in ODI cricket and Wanindu Hasaranga in T20I cricket. Also, the board has removed Dimuth Karunaratne from the Test captaincy and handed it over to Dhananjaya de Silva, who will become the 18th player from his country to lead in Tests. The above-mentioned development was recently confirmed by Chief Selector Upul Tharanga.

In the ICC Men’s T20I Player of the Year 2023 nominees, the cricket governing body has included Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav, Zimbabwe batter Sikandar Raza, Uganda left-arm spinner Alpesh Ramjani and New Zealand batter Mark Chapman in the list.

Suryakumar Yadav is currently the number-one batter in the T20I format whereas, Sikandar Raza has played some brilliant T20I knocks for Zimbabwe in the past. Uganda’s Alpesh Ramjani showcased tremendous performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup Africa qualifier and helped the team book a maiden place in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Mark Chapman on the other hand was also at his best with his performance in the shorter format for the Blackcaps.

A brief look at the ICC Men’s T20I Player of the Year 2023 nominees

Suryakumar Yadav

Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav had a tremendous year with the bat in the T20I format in 2023 and will aim to win the award for the second consecutive time. Suryakumar has played a total of 18 T20I matches this year and has scored 733 runs at an average of 48.86. His strike rate was 155.95 on this occasion and has slammed 2 hundred as well in the T20I format this year. His highest score has been 112* and is one of the prime candidates to win the ICC Men’s T20I Player of the Year 2023 award.

Sikandar Raza

Zimbabwean batsman Sikandar Raza ended the year 2023 with 515 runs in the T20I format along with six half-centuries. Raza was in significant form during the 2024 T20 World Cup Africa qualifier and hit a total of three half-centuries from six matches in the qualifiers. Raza’s highest score came against Kenya, where he scored 82 runs and also picked up 2/21 with the ball. However, Zimbabwe finished 3rd in the standings and were not able to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup from the Africa region.

Sikandar Raza has been brilliant for Zimbabwe over the years and with such great performance, Raza can win the ICC Men’s T20I Player of the Year.

Alpesh Ramjani

Alpesh Ramjani is one name, with whom not many cricket fans might be familiar. But, the Uganda left-arm spin bowling all-rounder has played a very major role in helping them qualify for their first-ever T20 World Cup. Uganda made a major upset by defeating Zimbabwe in the 2024 T20 World Cup Africa qualifier.

Alpesh Ramjani has played a total of 35 T20I matches for Uganda and has picked up 60 wickets along with 549 runs with two half-centuries.

Mark Chapman

The young left-handed batsman started playing T20Is in 2023 on a tour of Pakistan earlier this year and scored 270 runs to become the Player of the Series. Chapman has played a significant role for the Kiwis at the number 4 and 5 position and till now has scored 1349 runs from 62 matches at an average of 29.97. Chapman is also among the top run scorers in the T20I format this year and has scored 576 runs from 21 matches. Chapman has also slammed one hundred this year.

Amongst very tough competition, Suryakumar Yadav and Sikandar Raza are one of the main contenders to win the ICC Men’s T20I Player of the Year 2023.

Kusal Mendis is all set to lead Sri Lanka in the upcoming home ODI series against Zimbabwe. The series involves three ODIs that kick off the series followed by a three-match T20I series. The final ODI squad has been announced with Kusal Mendis all set to lead an experienced side.

All the matches will be played in Colombo with the ODIs to be played on January 6, 8, and 11. The T20Is then follow on January 14, 16 and 18. Sri Lanka who finished ninth in the recently concluded ICC World Cup are all set to resume playing international cricket in the brand new year of 2024.

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the following preliminary squads selected by the Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee, focusing on the Zimbabwe Tour of Sri Lanka. The final squads for both the ODI and T20I squads will be selected out of the below-given preliminary squads,” said a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee headed by Upul Tharanga came up with the idea to announce different teams and captains for the ODI and T20I cricket to focus on the forthcoming Zimbabwe cricket series which will commence on January 6.

Sri Lanka’s ODI Squad Announced

Based on the performance of ongoing Major Clubs limited over cricket tournaments selectors made this selection and all five selection committee members saw the Major club matches and discussed with Provincial selectors to make the selections.

Charith Asalanka was named the vice-captain of the ODI and T20I squads. Dasun Shanaka led Sri Lanka in the World Cup but was ruled out of the tournament halfway with an injury. Kusal Mendis who was named the skipper for the remainder of the tournament is a part of this squad as a specialist keeper.

Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga have been picked in both squads. The duo will pair up once again and will be back in action. Theehskana was the lead spinner for Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup with Hasaranga struggling with injury concerns. Akila Dhananjaya another senior spinner in the side has been named in the ODI squads as well.

The team has a great chance to win the ODI and the T20I series at home against the minnows after their World Cup heartbreak. Injuries coupled with the bad form of key players were the reason behind the team’s lackluster performance in the tournament. Sri Lanka made it to the final of the Asia Cup 2023 before the World Cup but lost to India.
