Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq were the center of the attraction during the recently concluded IPL 2023 as they engaged in a heated altercation during the game between Lucnkow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore, which saw many getting involved in it. 

The whole saga started when during the LSG’S innings there was a  heated exchange of words between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq during the game. The duo had some harsh words to say to each other during the game. While many thought that was an on-field tiff, the matter extended even to the post-match handshakes as well. 

Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq had to go at each other and were separated by their teammates. Amidst all this, LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir stepped in too and then the spotlight was on him and Kohli as they too had a verbal spat. 

What caught the attention of many was when Virat Kohli was having a word with Kyle Mayers, Gautam Gambhir interrupted and took the West Indies all-rounder away with him. This ignited another tiff between the two former Indian cricketers. 

Kyle Mayers shedding light on the same aggressive nature on the field shows courage and the willingness to get your team over the line.

Speaking to Fan Code, he explained: “It’s great, sometimes you need to get at your opposition, anything you can possibly get out of the game. Being aggressive is always good, it shows courage and the willingness to get your team over the line.” 

Any bowler would want to dismiss Virat Kohli – Kyle Mayers 

Kyle was also asked to pick one most ‘precious’ wicket between Kohli and Rohit Sharma and the West Indies star all-rounder picked Virat.

He added:  “I think Kohli, any bowler would want to dismiss Kohli, the best player across all three formats,” he said.

Kyle Mayers is currently playing the T20I series for West Indies against India. He will be next seen in action when both teams take on each other in a second match on Sunday (6th August).

As Virat Kohli was having a go at Naveen-ul-Haq, LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir then interrupted too which saw two greats of Indian cricket getting involved in that too. They had some harsh words to say to each other and were the main talking about. 

1983 World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev finally shared his verdict on the incident and said that BCCI needs to groom players as good citizens as well. Speaking to The Week, he said: 

“They (BCCI) have to groom players to be good citizens also. What happened between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli in the IPL, it was painful for me.”

Kapil Dev admitted that although sportsmen can lose their cool but it was difficult for him to understand how Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir behaved in that manner.

He elaborated: “My two most important people―Virat Kohli, one of the top batters in the world; Gambhir is now a member of Parliament―how can they behave in such a manner? But sportsmen do lose their mind, from Pelé to Don Bradman to all people.” 

For their poor behaviour, the trio of Naveen-ul-Haq, Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli were fined heavily by the BCCI after the game.

IPL 2023: Chennai Super Kings have the highest brand value among teams

Chennai Super Kings have the highest brand value among teams in the IPL as they are worth USD 212 million. Their value saw a hike of 45.2% from last year as they had a brand value of 146 million in 2022. The unmatched popularity of skipper MS Dhoni has seen them getting a massive rise from last year.

In fact, the 2010, 2014, and 2015 editions of the IPL did not witness a single five-wicket haul. IPL Purple Cap (Most Wickets). The IPL Purple Cap is awarded to the player who picks up the most number of wickets in an IPL season. The IPL governing council announced the introduction of the Purple Cap in the very first season of the tournament in 2008. As per the rules, the bowler with the most wickets in the competition during the course of the tournament would wear the Purple Cap while fielding.

The left-arm pacer picked up 22 wickets in 11 games and played a key role in making Rajasthan Royals the first-ever IPL winners. So far, only Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Dwayne Bravo have managed to win the Purple Cap more than once.

Both the bowlers have won it twice with Bravo being the first one to do so. Bhuvneshwar, on the other hand, is the only bowler to win IPL Purple Cap in back-to-back seasons. The record for picking the most number of wickets in a single edition of the IPL belongs to Dwayne Bravo and Harshal Patel for taking 32 wickets in the 2013 and 2021 editions respectively.

Kasi Vishwanathan said that with the kind of ability MS Dhoni possess, the keeper-batter would’ve finished the game. He talked about how the CSK skipper would’ve felt after getting out on golden duck.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he said: “When 21 were required off 14 balls when Rayudu got us to that position, I think MS Dhoni might have felt bad when he was dismissed on the first ball he faced. He would have finished the match. Given his skillset, he would have finished the game in style. 

But when he was dismissed, probably he might have felt that ‘I couldn’t fulfil my responsibility.’ He might have felt ‘What if we lose from here having come so close’. We all knew Jadeja was there, but still.”

Kasi Vishwanathan further went on to hail Ravindra Jadeja, saying that they had faith in the all-rounder. He said that it was a dream come true for the team and that’s why MS Dhoni showed emotions.

He explained: “When 10 were needed off the final two balls and Jadeja hit the six, which was very difficult to hit, we had faith. Because defending the winning runs off the final ball is definitely tough be it any bowler. But Jadeja as usual capitalised and it was a dream come true for CSK. That is one of the reasons why Dhoni also showed his emotions.”

Tom Moody further pointed out that Mumbai Indians need to rope in some good overseas fast bowlers in their squad as there’s no guarantee about Jofra Archer and also Jason Behrendroff is just a power play bowler. He also said that the five-time champions need to provide support for Piyush Chawla in the spin bowling department. He elaborated: 

“They need to review their overseas bowling options, they’re no guarantee with Archer’s recurring elbow injury. Behrendroff had a good season taking 14 wickets but he’s primarily a powerplay bowler so they need some overseas death options. Piyush Chawla has an outstanding season but he can’t do it alone, they need more spin options from overseas or try to discover new domestic spin talent.”

The easy thing would be to walk away from here, but the harder thing would be working hard for 9 months and try to play another IPL. It would be a gift from me, won’t be easy on the body.” He concluded.

Earlier in the game. CSK won the toss and opted to bowl first keeping the conditions in mind. After GT posted the highest-ever total in an IPL final of 214/4 CSK’s target was revised to 171 in 15 overs with rain interruption in the mid-innings break.

The pacer spoke about the discussion he had with Ambati Rayudu on winning the IPL. The veteran batter played his part in the run-chase scoring 19 off 8 deliveries in the tense run-chase in the final five overs.

“Every time we had a discussion, he (Rayudu) kept telling me that I am going to win the final. The belief that he has is unbelievable. When you are playing, you just want to contribute. It was a simple plan. We knew we have to perform, even if it was just one game. We have to contribute to the team to win the final” said Chahar in his post-match comments after the final.

MS Dhoni scored just 104 runs in this IPL season at a strike rate of 182.46. He averaged 26.00 throughout the season and was dismissed for a duck in the final much to the surprise of the cricketing universe.

The CSK skipper also hinted at a possible comeback in IPL 2024 saying that his return will be an opportunity to say thank you to the crowds everywhere in India. He further said that he would return for the fans and ensure that he gives a return gift to his loyal fans.

In an interview with ANI, Shubman Gill praised Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, who have inspired generations of cricketers, and said that their legacies are immortal and can’t be defined.

“The generation that all of these people – Sachin sir (Tendulkar) sir, Virat (Kohli) bhai, Rohit Sharma – have inspired is beyond,” Shubman Gill told ANI.

For reference, Virat Kohli and Naveen Ul Haq had a verbal spat with each other during the game between LSG and RCB in Lucknow. The two players had some harsh words to say to each other and since then whenever the fast bowler has stepped on the field, the crowds have taken a dig at him.

Batting first, after winning the toss, Mumbai Indians lost skipper Rohit Sharma (11) and Ishan Kishan (15) early. But after that, Cameron Green (41) and Suryakumar Yadav (33) took LSG bowlers to the cleaners and brought their side back into the game. 

But Naveen-ul-Haq kept chipping in with the wickets at crucial junctures to put MI under immense pressure. However, Nehal Wadhera, who came in as an impact player, made a vital contribution and smashed 23 runs in 12 balls to take Mumbai Indians to a total of 182 runs.
