During his training session with the Bangladesh Premier League franchise Comilla Victorians, Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman was hit on the head. Rahman was struck on the head while practicing in the nets with captain Litton Das. Das hit a powerful shot which went onto hit him on the head. There was blood spilling from his head very soon after he was hit with the ball.

The video of the incident went viral on social media wherein the Comilla Victorians team were seen practicing. The players were getting ready for the Bangladesh Premier League games that were coming up. Mustafizur Rahman was standing close to the nets as well and it seemed he was offering some player advice. Litton Das was batting at the moment. The ball soon reached Rahman after Das struck a hard stroke. The ball struck him squarely in the head before he could get up.

Mustafizur Rahman was not able to stand up and hence was taken on the stretcher from the ground. Rahman is one of the lead pacers of the Comilla Victorians and has picked up a total of 11 wickets from 9 games at an average of 23.90. His best performance for his franchise has been 3/32.

He was treated with ice instantly whereas he was rushed to the hospital. Mustafizur Rahman is expected to miss the next Bangladesh Premier League match against Sylhet Strikers, the team will now have to regroup as a team and also think of playing without him.

Watch: Mustafizur Rahman hit on the head

“During practice a ball hit directly at the left parietal area (head) of Mustafizur Rahman. There was an open wound at his parietal area and we have worked with compression bandage to stop bleeding and immediately shifted him to Imperial hospital,” a media release issued by team physio SM Zahidul Islam Sazal stated, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

“After CT scan we are satisfied that he’s had only an external injury. There was no Intra-Cranial bleeding. Now surgical team has given him stitches to treat the open wound. Now he is under close supervision of Comilla Victorians team physio.”

Comilla Victorians are currently placed in the second spot in the Bangladesh Premier League 2024 points table. Victorians have won seven out of nine games whereas they have ended up losing 2 matches. With 14 points in their hands, Victorians would be one of the favorites to win the BPL 2024. however, it will be tough for them to make it possible without ace player Mustafizur Rahman.

The injury of Mustafizur Rahman is also a blow for the Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings. Rahman was picked up by the franchise in the IPL 2024 auction to strengthen the team’s bowling attack. However, the dates of the cash-rich league are yet to be announced, and Rahman shall get fit until then.

The Bangladesh team would also want Mustafizur Rahman to get fit as early as possible as he is very essential for the team in international cricket.

Mustafizur Rahman made his debut for Bangladesh during the IND vs BAN ODI series in 2o15. Rahman troubled the Indian batting lineup throughout the series and played a major role in helping the Bangla Tigers win the series. Rahman is majorly known for his slower balls and off-cutters that he bowls during the matches.

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match between Sylhet Strikers and Fortune Barishal ended with Fortune Barishal winning the game by 18 runs. However, during the game, Soumya Sarkar took a fabulous catch to dismiss Najmul Hossain Shanto for a duck. Fortune Barishal led by Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and elected to bat first and then posted a total of 183/6 with Kyle Mayers and captain Mushfiqur Rahim taking the charge as they scored 48 and 52 respectively.

Kyle Mayers was brilliant with the bat and the ball as he also took three wickets in the game against Sylhet Strikers. He opened the bowling for Fortune Barishal and bowled a double-wicket maiden in the first over of the innings. After cleaning Harry Tector, he bowled a brilliant delivery to Najmul Hossain Shanto who edged it and the ball went towards slip where Soumya Sarkar took a brilliant one-handed catch diving to his left and Shanto was gone for a duck on his third delivery.

Kyle Mayers was awarded the Player of the Match for his brilliant all-round performance taking a figure of 3/12 in four overs which also included a double-wicket maiden and also scored 48 off 31 deliveries which included three fours and three sixes. The ball that got him the wicket of Najmul Hossain Shanto was a full-length delivery angling across which caught a thick outside edge that went to the slips where Soumya Sarkar was ready and he took a blinder diving to his left and sticking his hand out to gulp the ball.

Najmul Hossain Shanto who is the newly appointed captain of the Bangladesh team went for a duck in the BPL game against Fortune Barishal. Sylhet Strikers is led by Mohammad Mithun and the team is not in a good position in the game as they have lost seven out of the ten games they have played. They are second last on the points table just ahead of Durdanto Dhaka.

Watch- Soumya Sarkar takes a blinder off Kyle Mayers’ delivery to dismiss Najmul Hossain Shanto

Soumya Sarkar may have had a bad day at the office with the bat as he scored a run-a-ball eight but his catch of Najmul Hossain Shanto was one of the highlights of the game. The BPL is already in the second half with Rangpur Riders already qualified for the playoffs whereas Comilla Victorians and Fortune Barishal are No.2 and No.3 at the points table respectively. Khulna Tigers are currently fourth on the table but can be displaced by Chattogram Challengers who are just behind them based on NRR.

Soumya Sarkar’s catch can be considered the catch of the tournament as it was a great catch in the slips diving towards his left and completing the catch with phenomenal reaction timing. He timed his flight perfectly to gather the ball which found the edge of Najmu Hossain Shanto’s bat and in the end, Soumya Sarkar won the battle and Kyle Mayers got his second wicket of the match.

New Zealand star James Neesham has backed Bangladesh to do well in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The highly-anticipated event is scheduled to take place in the Caribbeans and the United States of America in June this year.

The 33-year-old is currently in Bangladesh where he is playing in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League. He is representing Rangpur Riders in the competition. Bangladesh are yet to win an ICC trophy or qualify for the final. As far as their record in the T20 World Cup is concerned, they have not managed to do well.

While they have played in all the editions of the competition so far, they are yet to make it to the knockout stage. In the last four editions of the T20 World Cup, they crashed out at the second stage of the tournament after managing just two wins in each edition. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, Bangladesh won only two games and finished at the ninth spot in the 16-team competition.

James Neesham on Bangladesh’s chances:

While Bangladesh have not performed in the T20 World Cups so far, James Neesham believes they could be a dark horse for the upcoming edition of the competition. He started by pointing out that Bangladesh could have defeated New Zealand in their backyard in the three-match T20I series in December. The series eventually ended at 1-1.

He further said that Bangladesh cricket has gone from strength to strength in recent times and also highlighted the team’s impressive pace bowling department. James Neesham stated that no team can take Bangladesh for granted in the T20 World Cup.

“I think we were quite lucky to get away from the T20 series in New Zealand. We probably could have lost the series as well. Bangladesh cricket has gone from strength to strength over the last few years, especially the fast bowling department.

“We used to almost bully Bangladesh cricket in our conditions which are bouncy and we had seam bowlers a lot quicker and lot bouncier than them. But what we have seen in the last couple of tours, you got a pacer Shoriful, who can swing the ball with pace and get good bounce,” James Neesham was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“They obviously had a strong tour in New Zealand and they should be happy with that. None can take them for granted in the upcoming T20 World Cup. It won’t be that easy. They will be extremely an challenging team with the kind of conditions we have seen in the West Indies. I think there is a lot of potential in Bangladesh cricket and there are strong players around,” he added.

Bangladesh did perform well on their tour of Bangladesh in December last year. After losing the first two ODIs, they won the third ODI by nine wickets after bowling out New Zealand for just 98. They also won the first T20I before the second T20I ended without a result and the hosts won the third T20I.

Pakistani batsman Ahmed Shehzad has always been a decent fielder apart from being a talented batsman. During the Bangladesh Premier League match between Fortnue Barishal and Durdanto Dhaka, Shehzad took a brilliant diving catch while fielding in the mid-wicket region. Shehzad has been out of the Pakistan cricket team for a while and is seen playing league cricket.

On the fourth ball of the second innings, Durdanto Dhaka batsman Mohammad Naim had already slammed Fortune Barishal bowler Keshav Maharaj for 10 runs from three balls, however, while trying to attack Maharaj, Naim went on the back foot and pulled a short ball towards the mid-wicket region. Naim was not able to clear the boundary and he was caught by Ahmed Shehzad while diving on the boundary.

Watch – Ahmed Shehzad showcases his fielding brilliance during BPL 2024

Ahmed Shehzad was hurt while taking the catch and it was reviewed by the third umpire whether it was a fair dismissal or not. In the replay, it was found that it was a fair catch and Mohammad Naim had to walk back to the dressing room.

While Ahmed Shehzad took a brilliant catch it reminded the fans of the false catch that he took of Sri Lankan batsman Lahiru Thirimanne in 2015. In the replay, it was found that while Shehzad dived to take the catch, the ball had touched the ground. However, Shehzad took the ball in his hands and appealed for the catch despite clearly not completing it. At last, the third umpire gave the batsman not out as the ball had touched the ground.

Returning to the Bangladesh Premier League match between Fortnue Barishal and Durdanto Dhaka, Barishal put up a score of 186/6, captain Tamim Iqbal top scored with 71 runs from 45 balls whereas, other batsmen such as Ahmed Shehzad, Soumya Sarkar, and Mahmudullah scored 10 to 30 odd runs respectively.

Alauddin Babu picked up 3 wickets with the ball whereas Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam picked up 2 and 1 wicket respectively for Durdanto Dhaka.

Chasing down the target, Durdanto Dhaka were not off to a decent start as they lost early wickets and never got going throughout the chase. No other batsman apart from Alex Ross was able to stay at the crease for long and were dismissed cheaply. Ross played an unbeaten innings of 89 runs and smashed 5 fours and 7 sixes throughout his innings. In the end, Dhaka finished their innings at 159/8 and lost the match by 27 runs.

Mohammad Saifuddin and Khaled Ahmed picked up 3 wickets each with the ball whereas Keshav Maharaj and Obed McCoy picked up 1 wicket each.

This was the 9th loss for the Durdanto Dhaka in the Bangladesh Premier League 2024 whereas Fortune Barishal have moved to the 3rd spot with their fifth win of the match. Barishal will want to continue their winning momentum and also win the tournament this year.

Durdanto Dhaka on the other hand, will be aiming to break their streak of losses in the tournament and also make a comeback in the competition.

In a recent development, the Bangladesh Cricket Board recalled veteran all-rounder Mahmudullah for Bangladesh’s upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka on home soil, starting from early March onwards. Two of Asia’s biggest cricketing rivals are set to lock horns in a 3-match ODI and T20I series which will begin with the shortest format from March 4 onwards.

Mahmudullah was not a part of Bangladesh which recently welcomed Kane Williamson’s New Zealand for a full-fledged all-format series last year in December for a month-long tour where they played 2 Tests and 3 T20Is as well as ODIs. The Kiwis were only able to win the ODI series by 2-1 otherwise the Test and T20 series remained 1-1.

In their upcoming international assignment after the conclusion of Bangladesh Premier League 2024, the Bangla Tigers host the Lanka Lions from March 4 onwards (1st T20I). The following T20Is will then take place on the 6th and 9th in Sylhet before the ODI series on the 13th, 15th, and 18th of March in Chattogram.

The BCB has also included uncapped spin bowler Aliss Al Islam into the T20 side and has also recalled players like Mohammad Naim, Anamul Haque, Taijul Isman, and Taskin Ahmed. But the biggest news from BCB’s squad announcement has been the inclusion of Mahmudullah.

The all-rounder who is just 2 years from turning 40, last played a T20 game for the national side in 2022 during the 20-over Asia Cup in Dubai which was eventually won by Sri Lanka. Since then he went through a lean patch especially in the shortest format and was also ignored for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 which took place a few months after the continental event.

He was still managing to find a spot in the ODI side owing to solid performances and the board had no option but to hand him a recall for their upcoming series after a brilliant outing in the Cricket World Cup 2023 as well as decent BPL 2024 knocks.

Mahmudullah had amassed 328 runs across 8 matches in CWC 2023, including a century against South Africa and a sole half-century against Pakistan in the league stages before the Bangladeshis finished at the bottom half of the table and missed out from direct ICC Champions Trophy 2025 qualification.

In the ongoing BPL season, the 38-year-old has accumulated 197 runs in 9 matches for the Fortune Barishal at a good strike rate of 143.79. Although his team, which is led by outcast opening batter Tamim Iqbal are going to find it hard to make it to the play-off rounds but Mahmudullah will be happy regardless for the national team’s comeback.

This Is How Bangladesh’s Squad Looks Like After Mahmudullah’s Inclusion

T20I Squad: Najmul Hossain Shanto (Captain), Litton Kumer Das, Anamul Haque Bijoy, Md Naim Sheikh, Tawhid Hridoy, Soumya Sarkar, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Mahmud Ullah, Taijul Islam, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Aliss Al Islam

ODI squad for opening two ODIs: Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Anamul Haque Bijoy, Soumya Sarkar, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Litton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hassan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Mustafizur Rahman

Veteran Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi on Wednesday (14th February) became the new No.1 ranked all-rounder in the ICC rankings. Nabi replaced Shakib Al Hasan at the top to claim the spot after his impressive performances in the ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Shakib Al Hasan held the No.1 spot in the ICC rankings for almost five years. But missing cricket for a while due to injuries along with impressive performances from Mohammad Nabi with both bat and ball in the recent series against Sri Lanka saw him losing his spot at the top.

Mohammad Nabi made substantial gains after he hit a blistering 136 during the series opener. The all-rounder chipped in with the ball as well and picked up a wicket as well. His contribution with the ball saw him moving to seventh place in the latest rankings for ODI bowlers.

Mohammed Nabi has been a vital cog in the wheel for Afghanistan in the ongoing series. The all-rounder was economical with the ball in the second match even though he couldn’t contribute much with the ball for the team. Of late he has been sensational for the team in the ODIs, which has seen him getting rewarded as well.

In the ICC ODI rankings for bowlers, South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj held the top spot whereas Wanindu Hasaranga jumped up 14 spots to 26th position. Star pacer  Dilshan Madushanka also climbed up four places to 33rd position in the ICC ODI rankings for the bowlers updated on Wednesday (14th February).

Apart from Mohammad Nabi, Charith Asalanka, Pathum Nissanka, and Sadeera Samarawickrama make gains in batting

In terms of batting rankings in ODIs, Pakistan’s Babar Azam held the top spot. Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka after his unbeaten 97 in the second match of the series against Afghanistan climbed to the 15th spot. Apart from him, Pathum Nissanka, who hit a double century, climbed up 10 spots to 18th.

Sri Lanka’s premier batter Sadeera Samarawickrama also made substantial gains after his half-century against Afghanistan. The batter moved up to six spots and acquired the 41st spot in the ICC ODI Rankings for the batters.

There were slight changes in the ICC Test rankings for batters. New Zealand’s Kane Williamson increased his lead at the top of the Test rankings. He solidified his spot after his twin centuries against South Africa in the first Test. Whereas in terms of bowling, Jasprit Bumrah holds the top spot.

New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson also made substantial gains in the rankings. He moved six places to eighth overall in an impressive performance in the first Test against South Africa. With the second game ongoing, he is likely to make some more gains in the rankings.

In terms of T20I rankings for batting, Glenn Maxwell moved up to 11 spots and acquired the 24th rank. Tim David moved up 35 places to 27th) and David Warner climbed up 19 spots to 36th. Apart from them, Rovman Powell moved up four spots to 25th) and Johnson Charles climbed up 12 spots to equal 38th.

Adam Zampa moved up five places in the T20I bowling rankings whereas Marcus Stoinis climbed three spots to second on the list for T20I all-rounders.

After being snubbed out of the ODI World Cup squad where Bangladesh had a terrible campaign, Tamim Iqbal has asked the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to not name him in BCB’s central contract list for 2024.

The BCB agreed and decided not to give Tamim Iqbal a central contract because of uncertainties revolving around his international career. He announced his retirement from cricket back in July 2023 but changed his decision overnight after being convinced by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Tamim Iqbal resigned from his role as a captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team but made himself available for the ODI World Cup 2023 but was dropped from the squad after a fallout with skipper Shakib-al-Hasan.

The World Cup was a disaster for Bangladesh as they finished eighth in the tournament with only two wins in nine games. However, Tamim Iqbal did not return to the squad after the World Cup and missed the home and away series against New Zealand.

Tamim Iqbal returned to action in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League where he represents Fortune Barishal. He is having a mediocre season in BPL so far.

Earlier, he said that he would decide on his future in international cricket during the BPL. He has already retired from T20Is and his avenues to make a comeback are the longer formats. BCB has decided to exclude some more noteworthy players from their central contracts.

Tamim Iqbal has been one of the best openers for Bangladesh over the years and is one of the legends of his nation in the sport.

He has amassed more than 8000 runs in ODIs and more than 5000 runs in Test cricket and is the only Bangladesh batter to smash a century in all three formats. Tamim is the first player from Bangladesh to score a T20I century which came against Oman in 2016.

Apart From Tamim Iqbal, Few Other Players Are Also Sidelined By BCB For The Central Contracts

Ebadot Hossain, Afif Hossain, and Mosaddek Hossain are some other players who have been snubbed by the BCB from the central contract list. Bangladesh Cricket is witnessing a new era under the captaincy of Najmul Hossain Shanto with a lot of youngsters bursting into the international scene for Bangladesh like Towhid Hridoy, Tanzim Hasan, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Naeem Hasan, and Nurul Hasan have been rewarded by the board with central contracts.

Bangladesh Cricket team will host Sri Lanka in March for a multi-format tour where the two teams will play three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Test matches. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have a heated rivalry amongst each other which was sparked even further after the ‘timed out’ controversy in the ODI World Cup where Shakib-al-Hasan appealed for Angelo Mathews to be timed out and he was declared out.

2024 Bangladesh central contracts

All formats: Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Mehidy Hassan Miraz, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shoriful Islam

Tests and ODIs: Mushfiqur Rahim

ODIs and T20Is: Taskin Ahmed, Towhid Hridoy, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud

Bangladesh opener Najmul Hossain Shanto has been named as the captain of the team in all three formats. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced after the meeting they conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Monday.

Bangladesh were led by Shakib Al Hasan in the ODI World Cup 2023 after Tamim Iqbal stepped down as the captain of the side. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has also appointed Gazi Ashraf Hossain as chief selector whereas Hannan Sarkar has also been appointed as a selector.

Najmul Hossain Shanto also led Bangladesh during the ODI and the T20I series against New Zealand which was held in December 2023. At one end, Bangladesh were able to display a decent performance on the tour and won 1 ODI match out of three whereas they were able to level the T20I series by 1-1.

Najmul Hossain Shanto appointed as the captain of Bangladesh for 1 year

Bangladesh Cricket Board chairman Najmul Hassan Papon told the reporters after the meeting, “We discussed at length about captaincy… The board has decided to appoint Nazmul Hossain Shanto as captain for all three formats for this year.”

Bangladesh have gone through a lot of instability in their team during the last 1 year.

During the ODI series against Afghanistan, Tamim Iqbal who was leading the team in the ODI format, announced a shocking retirement from international cricket. However, he soon overturned his decision after having discussions with former captain Mashrafe Mortaza, BCB president, and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina.

Tamim Iqbal was given a rest from international cricket and Litton Das took over as the captain of the side for the rest of the Afghanistan series. However, later Shakib Al Hasan was given the captaincy for the upcoming tournaments such as the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup.

Bangladesh displayed poor performance in both tournaments and were ruled out after displaying a flop performance in both competitions.

However, there was also a rift between Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, who took back his name from the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup 2023 squad as he didn’t want to bat down the order. Shakib didn’t like Tamim’s behavior and termed it as ‘childish’.

Shakib Al Hasan also didn’t perform well during both tournaments and was diagnosed with a retinal ailment in his left eye. The eye issue began during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

In the seven ODI World Cup 2023 matches, Shakib Al Hasan could only muster 186 runs at an average of 26.57. With just two victories from nine games, Bangladesh finished in eighth place, putting on an amazing showing for the tournament. Shakib returned to action during the Bangladesh Premier League 2023 and played for the Rangpur Riders.

On the other hand, Najmul Hossain Shanto has played a total of 95 international matches for Bangladesh and has scored 3253 runs at an average of 29.84. He has scored seven hundreds and 14 half centuries wherein his highest score is 163 runs. Shanto would be aiming to get Bangladesh back on track.

Former Sri Lankan left-arm off-spinner Rangana Herath has denied the opportunity to reunite with Bangladesh Cricket as their spin bowling coach. The Bangladesh cricket board had offered him a 200-day role in which he would have worked with spinners across the country instead of taking over the national side.

However, Rangana Herath has closed off all the negotiations following discussions with the BCB about a possible return to the country’s cricketing ecosystem. He was first appointed as Bangladesh’s spin bowling consultant back in 2021, specifically for that year’s ICC T20 World Cup in UAE.

Herath had joined alongside former South African batter Ashwell Prince who joined as the team’s batting consultant. The Sri Lankan had succeeded former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori as the spin mentor whose 100-day contract had come to an end at that time.

In his first major assignment with Bangladesh in the T20 WC 2021, Rangana Herath saw the Asian outfit bow out of the tournament from the group stages itself after failing to win any of their 5 Group A matches. They were placed alongside eventual champions Australia, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies.

It was by far their worst performance in an ICC event and their favors did not change in the following year’s edition at Land Down Under. The Bangla Tigers were again knocked out from the group stages but they had at least won 2 games in the 2022 edition.

Their Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign saw them finish 8th in the points table. As a result, they missed out on direct qualification for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. Their next major assignment in an ICC tournament will come during the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies later this June.

Bangladesh were planning to bring back Rangana Herath as the national team spin coach by keeping the T20 WC in mind but now they have to look elsewhere. BCB ops chairman Jalal Yunus while speaking to media reporters a couple of days ago, claimed that Herath has turned their offer and they are already exploring other options for the vacant role.

“Herath is not with us. The offer we made to him (Herath) he did not accept and so he is no more with us.” – Jalal Yunus told reporters at Sher-e-Bangla stadium.

BCB To Take Virtual Interviews For Vacant Positions After Rangana Herath Rejection

Jalal Yunus further indicated that the BCB has shortlisted a few names after Rangana Herath refused to join their project. The apex board will be conducting virtual interviews of all the candidates who have applied for the vacant positions of strength & conditioning coach, batting coach, fast bowling coach, analyst for the national side, and national team assistant coach for the next 2 calendar years.

“The head coach will arrive on February 20 and we are working to fill the vacant positions. We have a committee that includes Naimur Rahman, Khaled Mahmud, the CEO, David Moore, and me. Today we sat and made the short list and very soon we will take an interview. We will take virtual interview on February 6 from the shortlist.” – Jalal concluded.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has claimed that Time will decide whether or not he comes back to feature for the national side as he continues his battle with weakened eyesight. Shakib had visited Singapore for treatment last month, mid-way through the Bangladesh Premier League before returning to play a very brief role for the Rangpur Riders.

Shakib Al Hasan hasn’t batted that much in the ongoing BPL edition and has only contributed with the ball, something he feels very sorry about doing for the Riders. Since the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, he has been dealing with a prolonged blurry vision on his left eye and it has made life difficult for him as a cricketer.

Maybe that is why he has also taken up national politics and he even recently won a Parliament seat for Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party. He has won many hearts of cricket fans throughout his career and when he went to fight for a seat in a western town in Magura District, Shakib Al Hasan won by a heavy margin and registered 185,388 votes.

While his life off the field has proved to be successful as of now, it remains to be seen how far can his cricketing journey stretch. It is being said that Shakib is doubtful of a Bangladesh return when Sri Lanka comes for 2 Tests, 3 ODIs, and more than 3 T20Is.

The 36-year-old said to the reporters that he would be speaking to the management before jumping on a decision. He said his future as the ODI captain will also be discussed in the meeting and admitted that he is struggling to find a rhythm as he is not able to bat that much.

“We are still playing the tournament (BPL). I will speak to the officials, and then take the decision (to feature against Sri Lanka). I will take a decision in this regard (captaincy) after talking with the board but we still have not discussed it.” – Shakib Al Hasan told reporters outside Sylhet International Stadium.

“The more I score runs, the more comfortable I will be. I can’t find the rhythm when there are no runs. I have never done this in my life (like) just playing with one side. It is the first time and I feel for Rangpur Riders. I am only able to fulfill half of their expectations.”  – Shakib added.

“You Are Repeating About My Eye, Eye, Eye”, Shakib Al Hasan Gets Agitated On Reporter’s Question

Ever since it was disclosed that Shakib Al Hasan had gone to Singapore for eye treatment, it instantly became a hot topic. Everyone started making their theories if Shakib would return to national colors again or not. And when the reporters again asked him about it, the veteran could not hold back and lashed out at the reporters.

“I don’t know when this (eyes) will improve. This thing that you are repeating about my eye, eye, eye, eye. There’s no problem in the eye. What you see wearing spectacles, I can see better than you. We are trying to find what has gone wrong. I went to Singapore to see what happened to my eyes and body and we are trying to find out where the problem is.” – Shakib Al Hasan concluded.

Pacer Taskin Ahmed has requested the Bangladesh Cricket Board to not consider him for Test cricket. Ahmed has been dealing with his pro-long injury and is all set to retire from the red ball format. As per a report by Cricbuzz, Taskin has already sent a letter to the BCB into the matter and is waiting for the reply of the board. The major reason behind Taskin Ahmed not playing Test cricket is that he wants to focus on the white ball format.

As per the report, Taskin Ahmed has showcased the request to the board to not include him in their red ball plans. Taskin believes that he can deliver more in the white ball format and it will also give him more time to recover from his shoulder injury.

Taskin Ahmed requests BCB to not consider him for red ball format

A BCB official Jalal Younus while speaking to Cricbuzz confirmed the matter, but added that the board is yet to take a step. He stated that Taskin Ahmed has sent a letter in which he has mentioned that he doesn’t want to play the long format but the board will decide after the ongoing BPL match is over.

He said, “He( Taskin) had sent a letter stating that he does not want to play longer-version cricket. After the game [of the ongoing BPL] is over we will sit with him in this regard. Let the coach [head coach Chandika Hathurusingha] come and we need to talk with him as well.”

Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha is also believed to have been aware of the situation and has asked the pacer if he could change his mind. Taskin Ahmed faced a shoulder injury during the ODI World Cup 2023 which resulted in him missing a couple of games in the tournament.

Taskin Ahmed later went for rehabilitation from his injury back home due to which he also missed the two-match Test series against New Zealand. Taskin is currently playing for the Durdanto Dhaka in the Bangladesh Premier League 2024 and is also doing his rehab regularly. Taskin also admitted while speaking after the match against Sylhet Strikers that he is still not at his full best but is getting better day by day.

Taskin Ahmed is also not willing to undergo shoulder surgery. The reason behind same is that he will require at least a year to go under the surgery and also recover from that. During this one year, he shall miss many important matches and tournaments for Bangladesh

In the past as well, Taskin Ahmed has dealt with a lot of injuries due to which he was not given the NOC to go and play in the Indian Premier League. The major reason behind the same was BCB didn’t want to take any risk with the pacer.

Apart from Taskin Ahmed, another pacer Mustafizur Rahman has urged the Bangladesh Cricket Board to not consider him for the red ball cricket due to his injuries. BCB granted NOC to Rahman as he was not part of the red ball team.

Bangladesh will be hosting Sri Lanka for two World Test Championship (WTC) matches in Sylhet and Chattogram during March. The Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka is expected to host the Australian women’s team during this period and as a result, it will be the first time that Bangladesh will not play a match in a Test series at this stadium. The two teams have a big rivalry with each other and they have a lot of scores to settle from the ODI World Cup.
Sri Lanka will arrive in the capital city of Dhaka on March 1, the same day as the BPL final, at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. The Lankan Lions will face the Bangla Tigers for three T20Is in Sylhet on March 4, 6 and 9. The first two matches are scheduled to start from 6:00 pm local time, while the third game is from 3:00 pm.
Following the three T20Is, the teams will move to Chattogram to play a three-match ODI series on March 13,15 and 18. The first two ODIs will be day-night encounters whereas the third ODI will be a morning start at 10:00 am local.
The two teams will return to Sylhet for the first Test from March 22, and then head back to Chattogram for the second Test from March 30. The tour will take place during the month of Ramadan when Muslims fast from the early hours till dusk. Last year too, Bangladesh played three T20Is and a Test against Ireland during Ramadan. Bangladesh recently played a two-match Test series against New Zealand in December 2023 which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Sri Lanka lost to Bangladesh in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and it was a controversial encounter because of the timed-out controversy involving Bangladesh skipper Shakib-al-Hasan and Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews. Their rivalry goes back to the Nidahas Trophy in 2018 which was a tri-series involving India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

The Rivalry Between Sri Lanka And Bangladesh

The Nidahas trophy encounter between the two sides saw Bangladesh emerging victorious and mocking Sri Lanka with a ‘Snake Dance’ celebration. In response, when India defeated Bangladesh in the finals, Sri Lankan fans did the same celebration to mock the Bangladesh players and since then these two teams had some sort of bad blood between them.

Cricket is a game that involves a lot of fierce competition and with fierce competition comes rivalry. Be it Australia and England, India and Pakistan or Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the rivalries have always created extra hype and had some of the best and most entertaining matches of all time. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have also produced some of the most controversial and dramatic matches in the sport’s history and fans will be expecting the same from the upcoming series.

The multi-format battle between the two rivals is expected to commence on March 4 and will conclude at the end of the month. Currently, Sri Lanka is facing Afghanistan in a one-off Test match and is playing some good cricket. The Sri Lankan cricket team is in a revival stage and is working hard to get back in form.

In a statement released by the Bangladesh Premier League franchise Sylhet Strikers, it was mentioned that captain Mashrafe Mortaza will be missing the rest of the BPL 2024 season due to political commitment.

The statement further added that Mortaza will be back in action if there is a break between political commitments and the schedule of the tournament. The franchise expressed their gratitude for the commitment of Mortaza to the franchise.

Mashrafe Mortaza has played a total of five matches for the Sylhet Strikers in the Bangladesh Premier League 2024. In the elections held a month back, Mortaza was elected as the Member of Parliament for the second time. His party Awami League has appointed him as the chief whip in the Parliament.

Mashrafe Mortaza set to miss the remaining phase of the Bangladesh Premier League 2024

The statement read, “Mashrafe will be available to play for the Strikers further in the season if there is an opportunity in between his political commitments and schedule. Sylhet Strikers franchise has extended gratitude to Mashrafe for his commitment to the team in the tournament so far and looks forward to have him back when he is able.”

Sylhet Strikers are not going through a decent run in the ongoing edition of the Bangladesh Premier League. The team has lost their first five games and is placed at the bottom of the table. Mashrafe Mortaza was seen struggling with his fitness throughout the BPL 2024 and it was also reported that he couldn’t prepare for the tournament. Mortaza batted in different positions in the team and also didn’t bowl at full pace in the tournament.

Interestingly, Najmul Hossain Shanto was not chosen as the captain of the team whereas Mohammad Mithun will be leading the side in the absence of Mashrafe Mortaza. Shanto led Bangladesh recently and led the team decently. Sylhet Strikers are set to face Durdanto Dhaka in their next match.

In his 19-year-old career for the Bangladesh cricket team, Mashrafe Mortaza played a total of 310 games and ended up picking  390 wickets at an average of 35.02. Mortaza has picked up one five-wicket haul throughout his international career. Apart from being a brilliant bowler, Mortaza was also an impressive captain.

Under Mashrafe Mortaza’s leadership, Bangladesh saw a redevelopment of their team wherein they started to defeat big teams. This includes India, Pakistan, South Africa, England and many more. Bangladesh also performed well in the ODI World Cup 2015, wherein the team qualified for the quarterfinals.

However, the right-handed bowling all-rounder has not played a single match for the team since 2020. While he has already retired from T20I cricket in 2017, the latter is still available to play ODI cricket. However, his form and fitness is a major barrier for him to make a comeback into the team.

The Bangladesh cricket team didn’t perform well during the 2023 ODI World Cup and finished in the eighth position. The Bangladeshi team will want to return back to winning ways and once again impress with their performance against big teams.

Jay Shah Set To Resign As ACC President?

A significant decision is expected regarding Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah’s position as ACC President, with indications that he might step down. The ACC presidential term is two years, and Shah is currently in the midst of his second term.

Jay Shah is considering the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman role, which is an independent post. The chairman elections of the global cricket governing board are scheduled for November. If Shah aspires to the ICC position, he must vacate his ACC role.

If Shah wins the ICC Chairman election, he will be required to step down from his roles not only in the ACC but also within the BCCI leadership. The potential conflict of interest makes it imperative for individuals to relinquish positions in both national boards and the ICC.

In 2015, Jay Shah joined the finance and marketing committees of the BCCI. In 2019, he secured the position of BCCI secretary. His involvement in cricket administration continued as he assumed the role of president of the Asian Cricket Council in January 2021.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been diagnosed with a retinal condition in his left eye and his eye problem started during the ODI World Cup 2023. Shakib consulted various Ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and all over the world, and after multiple rounds of examinations, it was revealed that Shakib had an infection with the retina of his left eye.

While speaking to Cricbuzz, Shakib Al Hasan revealed the problems he had in his eyes and was playing with a blurry vision during the ODI World Cup 2023.

This hampered Shakib’s performance during the tournament. Shakib Al Hasan had said, “It is not in one or two games in the World Cup, rather I was having it (the eye problem) throughout the World Cup. “It could have happened, I had huge discomfort facing the ball.”

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has now given a medical update on Shakib Al Hasan. As per the update, it has been confirmed that Shakib is suffering from Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy or CSR. The update further added that a conservative approach will be adopted to tackle the issue.

BCB provides medical update on Shakib Al Hasan

BCB’s Senior Physician, Dr Debashis Chowdhary said, “Shakib has been complaining of subtle issues with his left eye. After consulting Ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and abroad and after multiple eye assessments, it was confirmed that he is suffering from Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSR) of the left eye.

“It has been decided that a conservative approach will be adopted for managing the issue for now. Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy is a condition that affects the retina, leading to visual disturbances. The medical team overseeing Shakib’s case is optimistic about managing the condition effectively with a conservative approach.”

Shakib Al Hasan was only able to score 186 runs from seven matches of the ODI World Cup 2023 at an average of 26.57. Bangladesh displayed an unforgettable performance in the tournament as they finished in the eighth position with just 2 wins from nine games.

Shakib Al Hasan was also under a lot of headlines ahead of the tournament due to his conflict with former captain Tamim Iqbal. Tamim withdrew his name from the ODI World Cup as he didn’t want to play in the middle order. Iqbal also took a U-turn from his international retirement in the middle of 2023 and also resigned from the ODI captaincy.

Shakib Al Hasan ahead of the ODI World Cup stated that Tamim Iqbal’s behaviour was childish and that he shall learn to play for the team. Shakib also stated that Tamim shall learn from Rohit Sharma and believes that he is a selfless player.

Shakib Al Hasan is currently part of the Bangladesh Premier League and is playing for the Rangpur Riders for an amount of 40 crore Bangladesh rupee. Riders are currently placed in the 3rd spot of the BPL 2024 points table with one win from 2 games.

Shakib Al Hasan has only played 1 match in the tournament and was only able to score 2 runs.

The Pakistan players remain in the dark regarding the No Objection Certificate (NOC) situation with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). This matter has been a bone of contention between the two parties for quite some time.

The conflict revolves around the players’ desire to participate in as many T20 leagues as possible, while the PCB aims to impose a cap on such engagements. This disagreement over the NOC was a major point of contention last year, leading to a standoff where players were initially unwilling to sign the central contracts.

The players eventually signed the central during the ODI World Cup in India. However, challenges persist as players continue to face obstacles in pursuing their aspirations. Recently, Mohammad Haris had to return home from Bangladesh after failing to obtain the mandatory NOC from the PCB for the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

The right-handed batsman had already arrived in Bangladesh to prepare for the tournament. He was a part of the Chattogram Challengers squad. With PCB denying him the NOC, he had no option but to return home from Bangladesh. According to media reports, the Pakistani board has also denied permission to Fakhar Zaman and Iftikhar Ahmed to play in the BPL.

PCB denies NOC to Zaman Khan:

Fast-bowler Zaman Khan has become the latest Pakistani player to be denied a NOC by the PCB. The right-arm pacer was set to play in the BPL but failed to obtain the required permission from the PCB, according to reports in Pakistani media.

“PCB has cancelled NOC which was issued to Zaman Khan for Bangladesh Premier League. PCB earlier declined NOC request made by Fakhar Zaman, Iftikhar Ahmed and Mohammad Haris for BPL,” wrote Pakistani journalist Arfa Feroz Zake on X.

The development comes on the heels of reports suggesting that the PCB’s strict stance on the participation of Pakistan players in the BPL could strain its relationship with the Bangladesh Cricket Board. The PCB does not allow players to participate in more than two overseas T20 leagues in a year. As a result, it has been denying players the NOC to play in the BPL.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is all set to miss the 1st phase of the ongoing 2024 Bangladesh Premier League edition which kicked off 2 days ago on January 19th. He is expected to remain out of action for Rangpur Riders as he will be taking a flight to Singapore to treat an eye issue he has been dealing with for quite some time now.

This development was confirmed on Sunday morning by Nurul Hasan, claiming that Shakib Al Hasan will miss all of Rangpur Riders’ matches in the Dhaka phase. If his eye treatment goes well in Singapore then he will join the team for the Sylhet phase starting on January 26 but it all depends upon the seriousness of the issue.

The 36-year-old is dealing with a weakened eyesight problem, something that very few knew about. Nurul Hasan, who is the captain of the Rangpur Riders, disclosed this information yesterday during a press conference at the Shere Bangla National Stadium after his side lost their opening BPL fixture against Barishal Fortunes by 5 wickets.

The CEO of the team, Ishtiaque Sadeque further confirmed this development by stating that Shakib Al Hasan will leave for Singapore today for his treatment and if he is in the right condition post-treatment then he will join the Riders in Sylhet.

“He is leaving for Sylhet today and we are expecting him to be available during the Sylhet phase if he recovers from his eye problem. Let’s hope for the best but if that is not the case we have to play with our available resources.” – the Riders’ CEO said.

The leftie all-rounder has been out of the national side for quite a while now, since the ODI World Cup last year to be specific. He had to leave the tournament mid-way after sustaining a finger injury with Bangladesh finishing in the 8th spot and failing to qualify for next year’s ICC Champions trophy in Pakistan.

Shakib Al Hasan hasn’t returned ever since but he was trying to make his comeback through BPL 2024 before he faced the latest setback. He has also become politically active in the country, winning a parliament seat from the Western region of Magura town by a margin of 150,000 votes in the recently held elections for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party.

Can Shakib Al Hasan Return For Bangladesh In Time For T20 World Cup Amid Sustained Eye Issue?

Shakib Al Hasan has been dealing with a sustained eyesight problem since the World Cup last year and he also went for a checkup in London and returned to Dhaka 2 days before Rangpur Riders’ opening clash. As he looks set to miss their next game, it remains a mystery if he will be back for the national side in time for the ICC T20 World Cup in June.

If Bangladesh is to have a good tournament then Shakib becomes a key element for the team not just with captaincy but also with his all-round skills. Rangpur captain Nurul Hasan claimed that is up to the doctors now to identify what exactly is the issue and how much time is he going to take for a comeback.

Bangladesh U19 pacer Maruf Mridha gave a harsh send-off to India batter Aravelly Avanish. The ongoing ICC U19 World Cup game between the teams is taking place place the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

India U19 were put into bat first and they had a decent outing. Adarsh Singh played a great innings at the top and ended with the innings of 76 runs. However, after he got out, Aravelly Avanish tried to get going and played some decent shots in his innings.

But Aravelly Avanish couldn’t convert the start he got and perished early after scoring 23 runs. He got out to Maruf Mridha, who didn’t go easy on him after removing him. The bowler gave a fiery send-off to the batter after he sent him packing.

Maruf Mridha bowled a fuller and wider delivery to which Aravelly Avanish backed away as he attempted to carve it inside out over extra cover. The ball didn’t hit the middle of the bat and it went to the square. The man at deep cover settled under it to gather it.

As Maruf Mridha removed the Aravelly Avanish, the pacer gave him a send-off and murmured something. The umpire too interrupted and had a a word with the bowler as well as the Bangladeshi captain.

Here’s the video:

Notably, Aravelly Avanish had bit six on the ball before getting out. The pacer took his revenge to perfection and sent the batter packing. The left-hander played a decent cameo for the team and ended with an innings of 23 runs off 17 balls. He batted with a strike rate of over 135 and also hit 1 four and 1 six in his innings.

After his innings, Sachin Das (26*) played a cameo as well that powered India to a total of 251 runs. Skipper Uday Saharan played a great innings as well and ended with a knock of 64 runs. For Bangladesh, Maruf Mridha picked 5 wickets.

Over the last couple of months, he’s really developed into a wicket-taker – Bangladesh batting coach on Maruf Mridha

Bangladesh batting coach Stuart Law lavished rich praise on pacer Maruf Mridha for his heroics. He said that the pacer has developed into the wicket-taker in a short span of time. He added that the fast bowler deserved a fifer because of the hard work he has put in. He explained:

“Over the last couple of months, he’s really developed into a wicket-taker. At first, he was struggling a bit with his pace, but he’s worked closely with the bowling coach and they’ve got him running in hard and he’s now reaping the rewards. He’s very good at the death, well-deserved fifer for him. The wicket doesn’t change a great deal. 250, fast outfield, flat wicket, it’s not going to be easy, we have to play well to get there.”

Stuart Law further backed his players to chase the target and said that they need good partnerships. He added:

“The batters have shown that they are capable of doing it (chasing totals). We stick to our process and game-plans, it tends to work out better for us. We just need a couple of good partnerships and we’ve got the firepower to chase it down,” he concluded

India U19 team led by Uday Saharan put up a total of 251/7 against Bangladesh U19 in their inaugural match of the U19 Men’s World Cup 2024. However, during the innings, Saharan was seen engaging in a verbal spat with Ariful Islam. Saharan played an innings of 64 runs from 94 balls and hit a total of 4 fours throughout his stay at the crease.

On the 2nd ball of the 25th over which was bowled by Islam, Uday Saharan played the ball towards the fine-leg region and ran for a single. However, the Bangladesh bowler was not happy on the ground and engaged in a tussle of words with the Indian captain. The umpires tried to calm down both the players and landed in between the discussion.

Watch – Uday Saharan engages in a verbal fight with Ariful Islam

Indian opener Adarsh Singh was the top run scorer of the Indian innings and scored 76 runs from 96 balls. He also hit a total of six fours during his stay at the crease. However, it was not a decent start for the Indian U19 team as they lost opener Arshin Kulkarni for 7 runs and Musheer Khan for 3 runs.

However, Indian Adarsh Singh and Uday Saharan added 116 runs from 144 balls for the 3rd wicket. Priyanshu Moliya and Aravelly Avanish scored 23 runs each whereas Sachin Dhas played an innings of 26 runs from 20 balls.

Maruf Mridha was the star of the show with the ball for the Bangladesh U19 team and picked up a fifer. Mridha ended the innings with figures of 5/43 in 8 overs. Chowdhary Mohammad Rizwan and Mahfuzur Rahman Rabby picked up 1 wicket each.

India are the defending champions of the U19 World Cup and also the most successful team in the history of the tournament. However, India lost to Bangladesh in the final of the 2020 U19 World Cup, and after the end of the match, the Bangladeshi players did something unexpected.

After Bangladeshi batsman Rakibul Hasan hit the winning runs to India bowler Sushant Mishra, the players of both sides engaged in a physical fight and it was a shameful end to the tournament. While the reason for the fight was unclear, it started when the Bangladeshi support staff came down running towards the ground after Hasan hit the winning runs.

One of the Indian players went on to take on the Bangladeshi cricketer who had said some allegedly uncharitable stuff to him. The altercation kept on going for almost 50 seconds and the umpires and the support of both teams were not able to separate the players. However, in the end, India’s head coach Paras Mhabrey took the Indian team players back to the dressing room.

India will aim to kickstart their U19 World Cup campaign with a win and also defend their title to keep their dominance in the tournament. The U19 World Cup has produced many great Indian players such as Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, and many more.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is not ready to welcome the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises to invest in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). This is because the governing body is fearing that they might lose their rights.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises are asserting their authority over the world. They have invested heavily in the leagues around the world and are ruling the cricket. They have owned teams in some of the major leagues in the World in SA20, ILT20, and MLC.

However, there still are a few leagues around that are operated by their own boards. One of them is the Bangladesh Premier League. The tournament came into existence in 2012 and since then has been doing decent. But with the presence of Indian franchises in the other leagues, they have surpassed BPL in a short span of time.

The Indian stakeholders are no doubt trying to invest in almost every league. Considering their success many have welcomed them with both the seams. However, some of the boards are still aren’t interested, and one among them the is Bangladesh Cricket Board.

The BPL governing council member secretary Ismail Haider revealed that IPL franchises approached them many times. He added that BCB decided to run the tournament as per its own rules and was against someone else running it. He also admitted that they didn’t accept IPL franchises’ demands because they didn’t want to lose rights. Speaking to reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, he explained (as quoted by Cricbuzz):

“They (IPL franchises) don’t want to come or maybe there is no reason to come. They (IPL franchises) approached us many times. The board’s decision was to run the tournament according to our country’s style. We don’t want to do something where the tournament’s rights will not be in our hands and will go to someone else.”

We are losing money as they are not ready to welcome surrogate betting – BCB’s Ismail Haider

BCB’s Ismail Haider further added that BCB is losing a lot of money because they are against welcoming betting companies. As per the government rule in Bangladesh, one cannot allow gambling businesses to function.

Ismail Haider further added that apart from IPL and a few other leagues, almost every league is going through economic stagnation. He highlighted how betting companies are helping the country maintain the economy. He added (as quoted by Cricbuzz):

“The whole world is going through an economic stagnation. Apart from IPL and India’s cricket board, I also used Big Bash as an example. Shujon bhai goes to ICC and talks to every board’s CEO. We know how much everyone earns and what is being told to the media.

“It’s a difficult thing to do a T20 tournament [in this climate]. Not only T20 tournament, most of the national teams allow surrogates. Apart from one or two most are accepting it, even India.”

The 2024 edition of the Bangladesh Premier League organised by BCB will kick start on 18th January. Dhaka Dominators will take on Comilla Victorians in the first match.

Bangladesh all-rounder Nasir Hossain has been banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for two years. ICC took the step after Hossein was suspended for 6 months after he breached the ICC Anti-Corruption Code of Conduct.

Hossain was charged by ICC in September 2023 after he admitted the three charges. Hossain can resume playing international cricket from April 7, 2025.

Nasir Hossain admitted the following three charges of the Anti-Corruption Code of Conduct (as mentioned by ICC):

  1. Nasir Hossain breached the Article 2.4.3 code after he was not able to present the receipt of a gift that he received from of US Dollars 750 to the Anti Corruption Official. The gift was namely of iPhone 12.
  2. Nasir Hossain breached the Article 2.4.4 code as he failed to present the anti-corruption official with the invitation that he received to engage in the corruption charges with the iPhone 12.
  3. Nasir Hossain breached Article 2.4.6 in that he neglected or refused, without providing a compelling reason, to assist the Designated Anti-Corruption Official in their investigation into potential corrupt conduct under the Code. This included but was not limited to, neglecting to provide the Designated Anti-Corruption Official with all information and/or documentation that they requested, whether in the form of a formal demand made by Article 4.3 or otherwise.

Nasir Hossain banned by ICC for 2 years

Nasir Hossain has played a total of 115 matches for Bangladesh in which he scored 2695 runs at an average of 28.67. He has scored 2 hundreds and 14 half-centuries throughout his international career and his highest score has been 1o0 runs.

Nasir Hossain was charged by the ICC Anti Corruption Unit for engaging in corrupt activities during the Abu Dhabi T10 league 2020-21. Hossain was part of the Pune Devils franchise and other than him Krishan Kumar Chaudhary and Parag Sanghvi (two of the Devils’ co-owners), Rizwan Javed and Saliya Saman (two domestic players), as well as Ashar Zaidi (batting coach), Sunny Dhillon (assistant coach) and Shadab Ahamed (team manager), were also charged for the same offense by ICC.

Pune Devils featured in Abu Dhabi T10 2021 in which they were only able to win 1 match out of six games. The Emirates Cricket Board was appointed to oversee the whole matter, which later pressed all the charges. While the Anti-Corruption Unit found that there were corrupt matches in the tournament, no evidence of match-fixing was found.

Nasir Hossain last featured in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League and played for the Prime Bank Cricket Club. Hossain was one of the most promising all-rounders of the Bangladesh cricket team at one time, but due to a dip in form, he was excluded from the national team. Nasir Hossain played his last match for Bangladesh on January 25, 2018, against Sri Lanka in Mirpur.

If we talk about the Bangladesh cricket team, the Shakib Al Hasan-led side had a forgettable run in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Bangladesh now will focus on the upcoming T20 World Cup and aim to perform well in the tournament starting in June 2o24.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan is poised to resign from his role before the conclusion of his current tenure. Nazmul Hasana assumed the role of Minister of Youth and Sports on January 11 after being elected to the parliament on January 7.

Nazmul Hasan, who has led the BCB since 2012, secured victory in the Kishoreganj-6 constituency in the polls. Subsequently, Hasan assumed the role of minister within four days. He contributed to the notable success of cricket in the country during his tenure.

Following Hasan’s recent appointment, concerns arose about his ability to maintain his position as the BCB president. If Hasan decides to step down from the BCB, one of the existing governing body members will assume the role of interim president until a successor is elected.

There Are No Problems In The Law – Nazmul Hasan

Addressing concerns about potential conflict, Nazmul Hasan stressed that previous ministers had served in both roles simultaneously and that the practice was not unique to Bangladesh.

“There are no problems in the law about me holding both posts (BCB president and Minister of Youth and Sports). There is no relationship between getting ministry and leaving from the post of BCB because earlier there were several ministers who also fulfilled the roles. It is also there abroad and so that is not the issue,” Nazmul told reporters on Friday.

I Want To Prioritize Everything – Nazmul Hasan

Hasan emphasized the importance of avoiding speculation about prioritizing cricket and expressed a desire to focus on all responsibilities as the Minister of Sports.

“But it would be good if that is not the case (holding both the posts) because then there might be speculations of me prioritizing cricket. I want to prioritize everything (being the Minister of Sports).”

I Can’t Leave Now – Nazmul Hasan

Reflecting on political influences on cricket boards, Hasan emphasized the importance of stability in the country’s cricket administration. He expressed his desire to continue as BCB president, drawing parallels with situations in Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.

“Basically there are quite a few factors here. First thing is that even if I wish for it, I can’t leave now. We have seen this in the case of Zimbabwe where they were suspended for almost two years and also in the case of Sri Lanka. I feel that there can’t be a rush to take a decision which may harm the country’s cricket.”

“One option is to talk to the ICC because there are two things which are very important. One is our term, which ICC always wants that an elected body finish their full term and the other is ICC’s current board’s own term,” he said.

Nazmul Hasan assumed the role of BCB president in 2012 and was unanimously elected twice in 2013 and 2017. Despite initial expectations, former captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza won’t be able to contest the BCB presidency until the next elections in October 2025.

Bangladesh, under the leadership of Shakib Al Hasan, failed to live up to expectations in the recent ODI World Cup. The team finished in 8th place in the table, securing two wins out of nine matches in the league stage of the tournament.

Bangladesh All-Rounder and all-format captain Shakib Al Hasan who is currently facing time off the field due to a finger injury he sustained during the ICC Cricket World Cup in India last year, provided a major update on his future as captain and player of the Bangladesh national team.

Shakib Al Hasan has been out of action since leaving the CWC mid-way through the tournament after injuring his finger during the group stages. He has not been able to come back since then and has missed a number of games for the Bangla Tigers.

Though he has not fully recovered, Shakib has started practicing for the upcoming edition of the Bangladesh Premier League, which is slated to start on January 19th. The domestic event will be important for them and could serve as a preparation for its contracted players who will take part in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the summer.

The Bangladesh cricket board has high hopes for this year’s edition especially because of the way the team has been playing T20 cricket off late. Under the captaincy of interim skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh had quite a successful end to their month-long home series against New Zealand which included 2 Tests, 3 ODIs, and 3 T20Is.

Shanto’s side after beating the Kiwis in the 1st Test, might have lost the 2nd but the most important thing was that Bangladesh picked up maiden ODI and T20 wins over the Blackcaps. While the Test series remained a 1-1 draw, the Kiwis clinched the ODI series by 2-1 and the T20I series remained 1-1 as well.

This has definitely given them a lot of confidence ahead of the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. Bangladesh will look to register their maiden appearance in the semi-finals of any ICC tournament.

Their best-ever performance in the T20 WC came in 2016 when they finished as group winners but were knocked out of the event in the following stage. And with doubts looming over Shakib Al Hasan’s comeback in the National team, it will be interesting to see if BCB appoints Najmul Shanto as the permanent captain.

Shakib Al Hasan Returns Training For BPL 2024 But National Team Return Depends Upon Meeting With BCB

After remaining on the sidelines for almost 2 months, Shakib Al Hasan has returned to train with his new BPL franchise Rangpur Riders at the Basundhara Sports Complex. The 2024 edition of the BPL will be important for him to get some game time in case he is there with the team for the T20 World Cup.

His availability is up for debate as he has become politically active in Bangladesh and a meeting with the BCB in the next days will decide his future with the team.

“No discussion on it (national team captaincy) so far but I will talk with the board and there will be a discussion about it. Later a decision will be taken in this regard by everyone that will be best for the team. Expectations are high every time and it will be the same this time too since we have been playing very well for the last one year in T20 editions.” – Shakib Al Hasan said.

Shakib Al Hasan Claims Conditions In the USA & West Indies Suitable For Bangladesh

While speaking about the balance of the current Bangladesh team, Shakib Al Hasan claimed that everyone in the team is doing very well and expectations from their fans will be very high when the T20 World Cup starts. He stated that the conditions in the USA and West Indies are going to suit them. Shakib concluded by giving an update on his finger injury.

“The team is balanced now and everyone is playing well and we played well in New Zealand and so expectations will be high. It will be played in the United States and West Indies where our cricket perhaps will be more suitable, so we will have a chance. I’ve started training but it will take a few more days. As I bowl with this finger (which got injured) naturally it will take some time but the progress is good.” – Shakib Al Hasan concluded.

In a recent development, the Bangladesh Cricket Board is planning to reschedule the National team’s 2-match Test series against Zimbabwe on home soil. The measure is being considered by the BCB authorities in order to give the team some extra time to prepare for the upcoming 20-team ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, as per Cricbuzz.

The mega T20 event is slated to start from June 1 onwards with hosts USA taking on neighbors Canada in the opening game. Bangladesh have been drawn into Group D alongside teams like South Africa, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, and Nepal.

The Bangla Tigers will play their first match of the T20 WC 2024 against one-time winners Sri Lanka on June 8 at the Grand Prairie Stadium. Their second game will see them go against South Africa 2 days later before ending the group stage with clashes against Netherlands on 13 June and Nepal on 16 June.

The top 2 teams from each of the 4 groups will proceed to the next round i.e. Super 8 (virtual QFs) before the semi-finals and final on 29th June at Barbados. It will be an important event for Bangladesh whose best performance in the tournament came in 2016 when they finished as Group winners.

They have never been to a T20 WC semi-final and it is something that the management will be keen to improve in the upcoming edition. That is why the BCB is mulling over rescheduling the Test series against Zimbabwe, which is also key for their hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final in 2025.

Jalal Yunus, the BCB Chair of operations, said that Bangladesh will not snub the Test series against Zimbabwe but they are eager to push the dates beyond the T20 WC. “It is not a fact that we are going to abandon the two Tests against Zimbabwe and certainly we will play the two Tests (against Zimbabwe) but when we will play that Test is something we need to decide,” Yunus told Cricbuzz.

Bangladesh Cricket Board Planning To Send The Team To USA Weeks Prior To The T20 WC

Bangladesh’s preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup will virtually start from 19th January through the Bangladesh Premier League. The domestic event will be important for them to check and see the form of its contracted players and whether some new faces will be introduced or not.

Moreover, the BCB wants to send their team to the USA weeks before the start of the tournament so that they can adapt to the conditions over there at the expense of pushing the Zimbabwe Test series further beyond its original dates. They will then host Sri Lanka for 3 T20Is-ODIs and 2 Tests before the other home series against Zimbabwe.

Head coach of the National team, Chandika Hathurusingha is expected to have a meeting with the BCB hierarchy in which they will be deciding when to host Zimbabwe, before or after the T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has yet again hogged the headlines for his off-field antics. The all-rounder has found himself in the middle of another controversy and that incident has gone viral on the internet.

Shakib Al Hasan, who contested elections in Bangladesh, was reportedly heading to the voting booth to witness the proceedings. As he was on his way to the booth, a huge crowd came along with him and gathered around him, supporting him.

There was a huge mob around Shakib Al Hasan and one of the fans around him tried to grab his hand. This, however, didn’t go well with the Bangladesh skipper as he wasn’t easy on the fan. The all-rounder turned around and went on to slap him in the face.

The video of the incident went viral on the internet. In the clip, it can be seen Shakib Al Hasan slapping the fan hard as he tries to touch him and grab him. Here’s the video:

Shakib Al Hasan contested the election for Awami League from Magura-1. The all-rounder bagged a thumping win with 185,388 votes to his name. He has been focusing on the election a lot following the World Cup 2023 and his hard work finally paid off.

Shakib Al Hasan often has grabbed the headlines for his behaviour. He often has been seen losing his temper and this was quite evident during many games as well.  He was also suspended by the Bangladesh Cricket Board for yelling at umpires during the Dhaka Premier League.

Decision related to Shakib Al Hasan continuing as captain will be taken soon – Jalal Yunus

Shakib Al Hasan was last seen in the action during the ICC World Cup 2023. He got injured during the fag end of the tournament and then was ruled out. Since then he hasn’t played cricket as he has been nursing the injury and also focusing on the elections.

In the absence of  Shakib Al Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto has been captaining the team and the left-hander has done a great job. This has now put the Bangladesh team in the middle of a double-edged sword as to who will lead the team once the all-rounder is back.

BCB director of operations Jalal Yunus spoke about the same and revealed that decisions related to the captaincy of the team will be taken by the board. He also stated that the governing body would sit down with the all-rounder and discuss with him before making any decision. He had stated;

“The final decision as to whether Shakib will continue or Shanto will take over will be taken by the board. But obviously, we will discuss it with him [Shakib] and will try to know his stance regarding this matter. And only after that, we will be able to know who is going to captain the side in the long term.”

Shakib Al Hasan didn’t have a great outing with the bat and ball in the World Cup. The all-rounder scored just 186 runs in 7 innings and managed just one half-century. He also wasn’t at his best with the ball as he bagged just 7 wickets.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan has revealed that Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is his favorite opposition captain. Shakib made the big revelation while speaking on the ‘What A Show’ YouTube channel. Rohit recently led India to their maiden Test win at the Sahara Park Newlands in Cape Town and became the second Indian captain to level a Test series in South Africa.

Shakib Al Hasan had also praised Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup following his rift with Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal. That time, Shakib had stated that Tamim should learn from Rohit on how to play selflessly for the team.

Shakib Al Hasan considers Rohit Sharma as a ‘selfless’ cricketer

Shakib Al Hasan had stated earlier, “Look at someone like Rohit Sharma. He built his career from No. 7 to opener, scored 10,000-plus runs. If he sometimes bats at No 3 or 4, would it be a big problem? It is totally childish. It is my bat, I will play. No one else can play. A player should bat at any position for the team. Team first. It doesn’t make any difference if you have made 100 or 200, and the team loses. What can you do with personal achievement? You want to make a name for yourself?”.

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy career for the Indian cricket team has been full of ups and downs. Rohit has been brilliant for India while leading the team in a bilateral series but is yet to win an ICC title for them. Under Rohit, India qualified for the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final, the 2023 World Test Championship final, and the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

However, if we compare Rohit Sharma’s captaincy career to Virat Kohli’s, then Kohli has had more success in overseas countries than Rohit. Though, Rohit has led Mumbai Indians to five Indian Premier League titles whereas Virat has won none.

Shakib and Rohit also share a lovely bond off the field. Shakib has also played a lot of matches against Rohit while featuring for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

Rohit Sharma is probably in the last phase of his career and might play for the team for the next two to three years. With the T20 World Cup coming this year, it is most likely expected to be played under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya or Suryakumar Yadav.

The tournament might also feature a young Indian cricket team without the likes of big names such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The Indian team will want to bring back the trophy home after 2007 and also win an ICC title after 11 years.

The Indian team will be playing against Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series, however, the squad for the same is yet to be announced. BCCI might rest Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the series as India would be facing England right after the T20I series against Afghanistan.

India and England would play a five-match Test series which is very important from the perspective of the World Test Championship.

Bangladesh Failed To Qualify For Semis In 2022 Edition

In the previous T20 World Cup in 2022, Bangladesh was part of Group 2. They lost 3 games out of 5 during the group stage. They got the 4th spot in the points table among 6 teams and could not qualify for the semi-finals.

Bangladesh will aim for a better show in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 this year. Since the 2007 edition, Bangladesh has never won any T20 WC trophy. They have also failed to reach finals. However, they have been a regular member of the tournament over the years.

Bangladesh also had a poor performance in the ODI World Cup last year. Led by Shakib Al Hasan, the team lost 7 games out of 9. They also lost to the Netherlands, which arrived as a big setback for the team. Out of 10 teams, Bangladesh ended in the 8th place in the points table.

Bangladesh Toured New Zealand For ODI and T20I Series Recently

Shakib Al Hasan is the skipper of Bangladesh in the shortest format. He might lead the team in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 too. However, nothing can be confirmed as of now. Recently, Bangladesh toured New Zealand for a T20I and ODI series. They lost the ODI series 2-1 while the T20I series witnessed a 1-1 draw.

As of now, there is no international series scheduled for Bangladesh ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Bangladesh Premier League 2024 will take place from January 19 to March 1 and keep the Bangla players occupied. Later, they might engage in bilateral series.

Test Cricket is the oldest form of the sport with a history spanning more than a century. With the ICC World Test Championships, Test Cricket has found a new rhythm with games becoming more entertaining and nail-biting.

Test series like The Ashes, Border-Gavaskar Trophy, The Pataudi Trophy, and Gandhi-Mandela series among others have enthralled fans to the fullest in the last few years. Moreover, viewers also keep a keen eye on Test matches to know which team will reach the ICC WTC finals.

Although Test Cricket does not have limited overs, pitch and weather conditions often help bowlers to dominate batters. In some games, bowlers crushed the batting side thoroughly resulting in low totals. In this listicle, we glance at the top 10 lowest 1st innings score in Test Cricket.

10 Lowest 1st Innings Score In Test Cricket

10. England- 58/10 vs New Zealand (March 2018)

At the 10th spot, we have England with a 1st innings total of just 58 in a Test match against New Zealand. During England vs New Zealand 1st Test in March 2018, the Kiwis bowled out the Englishmen for just 58 in 1st innings. Later, they replied with a gigantic 427/8. Bowling out England for 32 in 2nd innings, the Blackcaps also won the encounter by an innings and 49 runs.

Long ago in June 1912, England bowled out South Africa for 58 runs in 1st innings at Lord’s, London. This holds the record for the 9th lowest 1st innings total ever in Test Cricket. England posted 337 in reply and later bowled out Proteas for 217 in 2nd innings to win the match.

8. South Africa- 55/10 vs India (Jan 2024)

South Africa also gets the 8th spot on this list with a recent batting collapse against India. In the ongoing South Africa vs India 2nd Test, the Proteas got out for just 55 in 1st innings. This accounts for the eighth-lowest 1st innings score in Test cricket. The match takes place in Cape Town.

7. Zimbabwe- 54/10 vs South Africa (Mar 2005)

In March 2005 during a Test match between Zimbabwe and South Africa, the former was bowled out for just 54 in 1st innings. This records for the 7th lowest total in Test cricket. Zimbabwe arrived with a better total of 265 in 2nd innings. However, South Africa piled up 340 in 1st innings to eventually win the match by an innings and 21 runs.

Australia grabs the 6th spot on this unwanted list. When Aussies toured England for a Test series long back in 1896, they could only pile up 53 in 1st innings. The match at Lord’s witnessed Australia losing the match by 6 wickets in the end. This forgotten game is part of record books as it is one of the lowest 1st innings totals in Test cricket.

5. New Zealand- 45/10 vs South Africa (Jan 2013)

During the New Zealand vs South Africa match in January 2013, Blackcaps were bundled out for just 45 in 1st innings. The home team South Africa last won the match by an innings and 27 runs. Proteas posted 347/8 in 1st innings and it was enough to outplay the visitors New Zealand in the match.

4. England- 45/10 vs Australia (Jan 1887)

England holds the record for 4th lowest total ever in 1st innings of Test cricket. In January 1887 during the Australia tour, the English side was bundled out for 45 in 1st innings. It is one of the oldest Test matches when only a few nations used to play cricket.

However, despite a collapse in 1st innings, England won the match by 13 runs in the end. They posted 184 in 2nd innings and bowled out Australia for just 97 in the final innings against a target of 111.

Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed who has been out of international cricket since suffering a shoulder tear since last year’s World Cup is eyeing a comeback to competitive cricket through the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024.

The tentative dates for BPL 2024 are between January to March 2024. The league which will be played from January 19 to March 1are clashing with five other T20 cricket leagues being played across the globe.

After missing out on the World Cup, Taskin Ahmed was sent to a rehabilitation program to regain full fitness and start competitive cricket again. He thus missed the Test series at home and also missed out on Bangladesh’s tour to New Zealand soon after. He spoke to the press reporters after his training session at the BCB academy premises on Tuesday.

“By the grace of Allah, I am better than before. I had a problem in my shoulder but now I am better and I am looking to start with the BPL and hoping to start the new year well,” he told reporters.

“I bowled with a full run-up and this is the fifth session I am bowling and I am feeling better than before. The BPL is still two weeks away and if everything goes according to plan, I am hoping to make a comeback with it (BPL),” added Taskin who will be playing for Durdanto Dhaka in the BPL.

Taskin Ahmed To Play For Durdanto Dhaka In BPL 2024

Taskin praised the Bangladesh pacers for doing well in the helpful conditions in New Zealand. The Tigers notched up their maiden ODI and T20I wins in New Zealand with Shoriful Islam playing a big part in both of them. He was adjudged the Player Of The Series for picking up six wickets from three matches in the three-match T20I series.

“It was a pleasure to see pacers doing well in New Zealand, everyone bowled so well and it was a huge relief. At the end of the day we won in New Zealand on the back of pacers’ performance and it’s a something to cherish,” Taskin said.

“I really missed being part of the win. I always like bowling in New Zealand because you get good seam movement. But at the end of the day, it is our team and we are all one and in the coming days Bangladesh’s pace department will surely contribute to more wins,” he further added.

The premier Bangladesh pacer also shared disappointment on being not given the NOC by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) over participating in IPL 2024. As per reports it was earlier reported that the board would deny him ging the NOC for national committments. His fellow Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was picked up by Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024 auction for 2 crores.

“When the offer comes, the board doesn’t want to release me for different reasons; sometimes we have games and sometimes it’s because of my health. I have spoken with the board and they told me that they will consider (my case to play in different franchise leagues). But certainly, I don’t feel good missing these franchise leagues because everyone wants to play and so do I” said a dejected Taskin.

With the IPL 2024 scheduled to be held between March and May 2024, it clashes with Bangladesh’s international roster. Bangladesh are scheduled to host Sri Lanka in March for two Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is. In April and May, Bangladesh are scheduled to host Zimbabwe for two Tests along with five T20Is.

Najmul Hossain Shanto has been a great stand-in skipper for Bangladesh in the absence of Shakib Al Hasan. He has been great during the ongoing Bangladesh tour of New Zealand. Under his leadership, Bangladesh got the first-ever ODI and T20I victory against New Zealand away from home. They also won the Test back at home at Sylhet against the Kiwis. Bangladesh Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha believes that Najmul Hossain Shanto has shown all evidence to be the next full-time skipper of the Bangladesh national cricket team.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is likely to look for a long-term captaincy option as the availability of Shakib Al Hasan is questionable and Najmul Hossain Shanto could be the first choice for the role of Bangladesh’s skipper.
“I think they (BCB) will strongly think about that (long-term captaincy). Of course, it’s a board decision and Shanto has shown enough evidence for them to take him seriously,” Hathurusingha said after the last T20I at Mount Maunganui on Sunday.
According to Chandika Hathurusingha, Najmul Hossain Shanto maintains a positive attitude amongst the players and a positive environment in the dressing room. He communicates clearly with the players and he has been a great leader for all of the players in the squad.
“I think the attitude of the players… this young group had no fear and wanted to compete in the middle. The other thing I thought – the leadership of Shanto was outstanding. He was tactically spot on and very clear with the messages to the players and what he expects from them,” he added.
“I think the environment in the dressing room is much better because the communication is very clear, as I said, from Shanto. And they know they are good enough players to compete and I think that’s why there is no fear in the players’ mind,” he added.

Najmul Hossain Shanto Can Take Bangladesh To New Heights

Bangladesh Cricket Board needs to look for a long-term permanent captain as the days for Shakib Al Hasan are numbered and Najmul Hossain Shanto can be the first-choice option for BCB to lead the side. He has led the Bangladesh side in some of the ODI World Cup matches where Shakib Al Hasan was not available. He also led them to their first win against New Zealand away from home.

Bangladesh did not have an auspicious ODI World Cup as they finished eighth with just two wins in nine games. They were defeated by the likes of the Netherlands and could only manage to win against teams like Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. They were defeated by New Zealand in the ODI series by 2-1 whereas the T20I series was drawn 1-1 after the second T20I was washed out in rain.

Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha believes that Najmul Hossain Shanto is an able leader and can lead Bangladesh to new heights in World Cricket. The Bangladesh Team is trying to be a cricketing superpower for a long time and Najmul Hossain Shanto can lead them in their quest.

2 of Bangladesh’s best cricketers of all time, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal were involved in a heated rift before the start of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 back in October, and in the latest interview, Shakib mentioned that he had no interest in settling indifferences with Tamim and that he doesn’t care about the matter anymore.

Before the World Cup in India had begun, Shakib Al Hasan who captained Bangladesh during the tournament, lashed out at Tamim Iqbal for being selfish and for putting his desires ahead of the team’s requirements.

As it was revealed, Tamim was left out of the Bangladesh squad for not being 100% fit with the left-handed batter claiming that BCB was trying to play dirty games with him. Ahead of the major tournament, BCB had asked Tamim Iqbal to bat in the middle order instead of his preferred role as an opening batter.

The 34-year-old had denied BCB’s proposal and claimed publicly on Facebook that the Board is putting roadblocks in front of him as he tries to make a comeback to the national team. Tamim’s last ODI appearance for Bangladesh had come in September 2023 against New Zealand before the developments regarding BCB asking him to bat down the order took place.

In response to Iqbal’s claims, Captain Shakib Al Hasan lashed out at his former teammate and called him Selfish for not wanting to help the team. The All-Rounder even threatened to not participate in the World Cup if Tamim was included in the squad.

In contrast, Shakib Al Hasan compared the situation of Rohit Sharma who transitioned from a middle-order batter to an opener and he took a dig at Tamim for putting out childish statements in an interview weeks before the WC.

“I am sure whoever has said it, he thought of the team. A lot of things go into building a combination for a match. So if someone has said this to him, was it wrong? Or we can’t make such a proposal? I am just going to tell someone that you can do whatever you want. Is the team first or the individual?”

“Someone like Rohit Sharma built his career from No. 7 to opener, scored 10,000-plus runs. If he sometimes bats at No. 3 or 4, would it be a big problem? It is totally childish.” – Shakib said.

Shakib Al Hasan Reprimands Daily Star Interviewer For Asking Silly Question About Tamim Iqbal

In the latest interview with the Daily Star, Shakib Al Hasan reprimanded the interviewer for asking out-of-focus questions on Tamim Iqbal and said that it is a subject he is not interested in answering.

“Actually, the focus is elsewhere and the question you asked is not something I am interested in. It’s difficult to say with it never really happening.” – Shakib said.

“If he had played well then it would have been good for the team and it would have affected positively. And, had he played badly, it would have been better if he was not there. You can only understand something like that after the game has ended. So that’s not something i Can say.” – Shakib Al Hasan concluded.

Mount Maunganui is all set to host the NZ vs BAN third T20I on Sunday, December 31 which is also the decider of the three-match series. The match starts at 5.30 am IST which is 1 pm local time. Bangladesh won the first T20I and the second T20I was rained out.

Only 11 overs of play were possible in the NZ vs BAN second t20I where New Zealand scored 72/2. Tim Seifert scored a quickfire 43 while Daryl Mitchell (18) and Glenn Phillips were still unbeaten at the wicket when the play was called off by the on-field umpires Kim Cotton and Shaun Haig.

The rain started at 8 pm local time with New Zealand well poised at 72/2 in 11 overs. The cut-off time for a five-over match was 10:28 pm local but consistent rains meant that the umpires had to call off the game early. There are predictions of rain in the third T20I as well.

New Zealand will be led by Mitchell Santner. The side is without the likes of Kane Williamson and Kyle Jamieson. Both have been rested from the series with New Zealand lined up to play Test matches against Australia and South Africa next year. The senior players in the side will need to play well to avoid a clean sweep against the Tigers.

Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead Bangladesh in the series. They are without their senior players Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal. Mushfiqur Rahim. and Mahmudullah. Litton Das and Soumya Sarkar are the two most experienced batters in this lineup. However, it is their bowlers who have given the team the upper hand in the last two matches.

Shoriful Islam especially has been taking wickets with the new ball. Bangladesh defeated New Zealand in the third ODI followed by the first T20I. They were well ahead in the second T20I having taken an early wicket but rain played spoilsport.

The two teams have played 19 T20Is with the Kiwis winning 14 and the Tigers just four. The 1st T20I win was their fourth overall against New Zealand and their first T20I win in New Zealand. Now they have a chance to notch up a T20I series win if they beat New Zealand in Mount Maunganui in the third T20I.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has no clarity as to who will captain the team in the long run. Shakib Al Hasan currently is the skipper of the team as he took charge of the team ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023.

However, since the World Cup has concluded, Shakib Al Hasan hasn’t featured for the team in any of the assignments. The all-rounder has been nursing an injury, which he faced in the World Cup, and is yet to recover the full fitness.

Despite being injured, Shakib Al Hasan has shown an interest in politics. He is contesting in the upcoming general election and has missed two-Test series against New Zealand followed by the ongoing white-ball series against the Kiwis in their own backyard.

In Shakib Al Hasan’s absence, Najmul Hossain Shanto has captained the team and he has done a fantastic job. The Southpaw took the team to the Test series draw against New Zealand and also under him team won the first-ever T20I over the Kiwis in New Zealand.

With Shakib Al Hasan being away and Najmul Hossain Shanto doing a great job as a skipper, there have been a lot of speculations about who will captain the team. There have been several calls to give leadership to the latter but there’s no indication about that yet.

Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) chairman of cricket operations Jalal Yusuf opened up about the same and stated it’s a matter for the latter to decide if Shakib Al Hasan will be the captain of the team or not. He explained (as quoted by Daily Star):

“Look, whether Shakib [Al Hasan] will continue [as captain] or not is a matter for later.” He added that they still consider all-rounder as their skipper in all formats.

Will discuss it with him Shakib Al Hasan – Jalal Yunus

Jala Yunus further added that the decision to continue with Shakib Al Hasan as the captain of the team will be taken by the board. He added that they will discuss about the same with the all-rounder and after that only they will take any decision. He explained:

“The final decision as to whether Shakib will continue or Shanto will take over will be taken by the board. But obviously, we will discuss it with him [Shakib] and will try to know his stance regarding this matter. And only after that, we will be able to know who is going to captain the side in the long term.”

Shakib Al Hasan is expected to make a comeback to cricket soon. Currently, he’s undergoing rehabilitation after the finger injury. It remains to be seen what will be his future as the captain of the team.

Bangladesh currently are locking horns with New Zealand in the T20I series. They won the first game in Napier by 5 wickets. The second game between the team was washed off due to rain. The third game between the teams will be played on 31st December. It will be a great opportunity for them to win their first ever series against Kiwis in the shortest format of the game.

Bangladesh pacer Shoriful Islam won the hearts of many with his kind gesture in the second T20I against New Zealand. The match between the team teams took place at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

Bangladesh won the toss and opted to field first. They had a great start with the ball as they removed Finn Allen, courtesy of Shoriful Islam in the second over. However, in the same another incident took place that made many stand and applaud the pacer.

During the 5th ball of the second over, Shoriful Islam bowled a length delivery outside off. Daryl Mitchell, who was on the strike, got forward and drove it back. The ball hit Tim Seifert, who was ducking for cover, got hit on the head at the helmet, and then fell on the ground.

The ball deflected from the helmet of Tim Seifert to Shoriful Islam. The batter was out of the crease and the pacer had the great opportunity to run him out. He at one moment was set to run the batter out but decided against it.

Here’s the video:

The gesture of Shoriful Islam was applauded by many. This came as a surprise to many because Bangladesh have always been doing things against the spirit of cricket. They recently hogged the headlines during the ICC World Cup 2023 when they appealed to dismiss Sri Lanka batter Angelo Mathews timed out.

Tim Seifert looked okay after that blow and continued batting after medical attention. He played great shots in his innings and took his team off the flier despite losing a wicket early.

Tim Siefert ended with the knock of runs from 23 balls including six fours and a six. The wicket was not easy at all as he made it. The other Kiwi batters struggled to get going but the keeper-batter played with great intent and made sure that he took the team off the flying start.

NZ vs BAN: The Second T20I between New Zealand and Bangladesh was called off due to rain; Shoriful Islam and Tanzim Sakib pick wickets for Bangladesh

Shoriful Islam took Bangladesh off the flying start in the second T20I. He removed Finn Allen for just 2 runs. After that, Tim Seifert (43) and Daryl Mitchell (18*) steadied the innings and played well after the early blow. Although the latter struggles to score runs at a quick pace but former made sure he makes up for the slowness at the other end.

They added 49 runs for the second wicket before Tanzim Sakib sent Tim Seifert packing. Glenn Philips then came and struggled to get going. He was batting at 9 runs off 14 balls before rain played the spoilsport and the match was washed away. The Kiwi were 72/2 in 11 overs before the game was called off.

Bangladesh lead the T20I series by a margin of 1-0. They scripted history when they defeated New Zealand in Napier. This was the first time they thumped the Kiwis in the shortest format of the game in New Zealand. The third game between the teams will be played on 31st December.

Bangladesh’s fast bowler Ebadot Hossain is all set to remain out of action until next June and has been ruled out of the ICC T20 World Cup next year in the USA and West Indies. He suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury earlier in July during the ODI series against Afghanistan at home.

The Bangla Tigers had to play without the paceer during their poor performances in the 50-over Asia Cup 2023 followed by the ICC Cricket World Cup in India. Ebadot Hossain was a key part of Bangladesh’s setup before sustaining the ACL injury and getting ruled out of the back-to-back major tournaments.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as a result had to name Tanzim Hasan Sakib as his replacement for the World Cup and Asia Cup. Shakib Al-Hasan‘s side were out of the Asia Cup 2023 from the Super 4 stage and went on to finish in the 8th position of the CWC league table with just 2 wins to their name in 9 matches.

But the recent setback of Ebadot Hossain will increase tension further as Bangladesh prepare for the T20 World Cup next year. If the Asia Cup and World Cup were difficult, the T20 WC in the USA and West Indies is going to be an even tougher challenge as it will be a 20-team event.

With more teams and more competition, the subcontinent side will have to make sure they perform well in the next 6 months, building up to the World Cup.

BCB Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu Confirms Ebadot Hossain To Return In August-September

“Ebadot is likely to start from next season. He might return with the domestic cricket in August-September. We received such an update,” Minhajul said, as quoted by Cricfrenzy.

The ACL injury which Ebadot Hossain is not able to recover from was sustained against Afghanistan in July 2023. With his CWC participation hanging on the edge, he was sent to a 6-week intensive rehabilitation program after his MRI scans showed alarming signs.

BCB’s Chief Sport Physicist had confirmed about Ebadot’s absence from the Asia Cup last year with a statement that read, “Ebadot had undergone six weeks of rehab following the injury. We have had multiple MRIs done during this time. The reports suggest that his ACL is still a concern and requires further management. Therefore, he misses out on the Asia Cup.”

The 29-year-old was sent abroad for treatment as well but the Sylhet-born Pacer is not returning until the start of Bangladesh’s domestic season in August-September. Ebadot Hossain has picked up 42 wickets in 20 Test matches for the Bangla Tigers and has 22 wickets in 12 ODIs.

In the shortest format, Hossain has accounted for 7 wickets in 4 matches. What’s more outstanding is his First class record in Bangladesh’s domestic circuit where he has picked up 138 wickets in 50 matches.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has revealed that he faced discomfort in his eyes throughout the ICC World Cup 2023. Shakib Al Hasan also revealed that the doctor told him it was due to stress-related issues.

Shakib Al Hasan was the captain of Bangladesh in the ICC World Cup 2023. The team delivered a miserable show under his captaincy. Out of 9 games, they won just 2 matches and failed to reach the semi-finals. Bangladesh also lost to Afghanistan to register a big upset in the tournament.

Moreover, Shakib Al Hasan also struggled with his form during the World Cup. The left-handed batsman could only muster 186 runs across 7 games averaging 26.57. It was a bigger downfall than his earlier show in the 2019 ODI World Cup, where he slammed 606 runs and picked 11 wickets in England.

I Had Huge Discomfort Facing The Ball: Shakib Al Hasan

During a conversation with Cricbuzz, Shakib Al Hasan revealed that he faced issues in facing the ball during ICC World Cup 2023 due to some issues in his eyes. He also informed he went to a doctor who gave him eye drops and termed it a stress-related issue.

“It is not in one or two games in the World Cup, rather I was having it throughout the World Cup. It could have happened. I had huge discomfort facing the ball. The thing is that when I went to the doctor there was water in my cornea or retina and they had given me drops and told me that I have to lower my stress”, he said.

However, the Bangladesh all-rounder also said that he had the issues later too, even after the World Cup was over and he had no stress.

“I am not sure whether that was the reason. But when I again checked in America there was no stress and I told the doctor there is no World Cup so naturally there is no stress,” the left-arm spinner further added.

Team Was Not Ready With My Philosophy In World Cup: Shakib Al Hasan

Notably, Shakib Al Hasan was made the ODI skipper just before the ICC World Cup 2023. Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement from ODI cricket and Hasan had to take the ODI captaincy on his shoulders. Hasan said that if he had got the captaincy earlier, it would have helped.

“I’m not ready to put that as an excuse for stress as I have done captaincy. But if I had got that earlier, it would have been easy because if I had time I could make everything ready and go there,” the 36-year-old further added.

Hasan also added that the team was not ready to follow his thinking and philosophy during the tournament. He also added that Bangladesh struggled to perform in ODIs throughout 2023.

“The problem I faced was that the team was not ready the way I was thinking or the philosophy through which I wanted to play. If you see not only during the World Cup but through 2023 our ODI performances were not good,” Hasan concluded.

Shakib Al Hasan Skipped New Zealand Tour

Meanwhile, Meanwhile, Shakib Al Hasan took a break from the ongoing Bangladesh tour of New Zealand 2023. In his absence, Najmul Hossain Shanto led the team in the ODI series. Bangladesh lost the ODI series 2-1 after losing the first two games. They won the final encounter by 9 wickets.

Bangladesh and New Zealand will now wrestle with each other in a three-match T20I series. The opening T20I clash will take place on Wednesday, December 27 at McLean Park in Napier. The next two encounters will take place on December 29 and 31.

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal has been part of many controversies in the year 2023. The left-handed batsman has now urged the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to not include him in the central contract list. The information was shared by the BCB‘s cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus.

While addressing a press conference at the Sher e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur, Jalal Yunus explained that Tamim Iqbal has urged BCB to not include him in the central contract list and will soon meet the president after the national elections.

Tamim Iqbal moves out of Bangladesh’s centrally contracted players

Jalal Yunus said (as quoted by The Daily Star), “He has his own plan and he has requested not to include him now in the new central contract. He is supposed to meet with our board president [Nazmul Hassan Papon] after national election and only after that he will finalise his future plan.”

Tamim Iqbal announced retirement from international cricket in July last year, however, he reversed his decision after meeting Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Haseena. Iqbal resigned from Bangladesh’s ODI captaincy and was rested from the ODI format.

Tamim Iqbal also opted out of the 2023 Asia Cup due to a back injury. However, he was expected to return ahead of the home ODI series against New Zealand in September and then play the 2023 ODI World Cup. Though, this didn’t happen, and Iqbal missed both events.

The Tamim Iqbal-Shakib Al Hasan feud

After Tamim Iqbal missed the 2023 ODI World Cup, there was an open feud between Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Iqbal. At one end, Tamim missed out on the World Cup squad due to his injury concerns, Shakib was miffed with the Bangladeshi opener and stated that he is not a ‘team man’.

Shakib Al Hasan had advised Tamim Iqbal to play in the middle order, which was not liked by Iqbal and he rejected the proposal. Shakib then called Tamim’s behavior ‘childish’ and also asked him to learn from Indian captain Rohit Sharma.

Shakib Al Hasan had said while speaking to a Dhaka-based channel: “I am sure someone who is authorized had said this (to Tamim). I am sure whoever has said it, he thought of the team. A lot of things go into building a combination for a match. So if someone has said this to him, was it wrong? Or we can’t make such a proposal? I am just going to tell someone that you can do whatever you want. Is the team first or the individual?”.

“Someone like Rohit Sharma built his career from No. 7 to opener, scored 10,000-plus runs.

Tamim Iqbal has played a total of 391 matches in his international career, wherein he has scored 15249 runs at an average and strike rate of 35.21 and 72.62 respectively.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson and pacer Kyle Jamieson have been advised by the medical team to take rest and as a result, both of them have been withdrawn for the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh. Kane Williamson was supposed to lead the side in the series but now Mitchell Santner who has led the Blackcaps previously has been given the captain’s role for this series.
All-rounder Rachin Ravindra and fast bowler Jacob Duffy have been announced as replacements for Williamson and Jamieson. The NZC revealed that the decision regarding Williamson and Jamieson was made after keeping the team’s upcoming schedule in consideration. New Zealand has a Test series against South Africa and Australia lined up this summer.
The NZC has revealed that Kane Williamson who missed out on the action for seven months after sustaining a knee injury during IPL, will undergo a knee rehabilitation and strengthening after a lengthy spell of game time in India and Bangladesh. Kane Williamson was not completely fit during the World Cup but still played a few games for his side leading them to the Semi-Finals.
As for Jamieson, he is expected to make his return during the Test series against South Africa after suffering a hamstring injury. Kyle Jamieson will not be available for the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh as well as the T20I series against Pakistan in January. He was earlier ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against Bangladesh which New Zealand is leading 2-0.

NZC Wants Kane Williamson And Kyle Jamieson To Be Fit For Upcoming Red Ball Action

We want both Kane and Kyle to be in the best possible place leading into the next block of Test cricket against South Africa and Australia,” Gary Stead, the New Zealand coach, said in a statement. “Based on discussions with the medical staff and the players, it was decided a period of rehabilitation and conditioning was the best option for both of them.
“Jacob is an experienced T20 cricketer, and always brings a lot when he is part of the BlackCaps environment. He’s worked very hard on his white-ball skills in recent seasons. Rachin adds to any environment he’s a part of, and has a great desire to learn and develop his game – across all three formats,” he added.
The three-match T20I series against Bangladesh would have marked the return of Kane Williamson in T20Is who last played the shortest format against India last year in November. Kane Williamson will represent Gujarat Titans in the upcoming season of the IPL which is likely to be scheduled in the third week of March. New Zealand will start their preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup scheduled in June 2024.
Kane Williamson is expected to be fully fit for the Test series against Australia and South Africa. His participation in the T20I series against Pakistan is also unlikely given the NZC wants him completely fit for the upcoming summer of red-ball cricket. He will be leading the side as soon as he returns to the squad.

New Zealand seamer Kyle Jamieson will be rested for the next two ODIs against Bangladesh ahead of the three-match T20I series starting from December 27. He did not play the first game which the Kiwis won on the DLS method by 44 runs.

While Jamieson will have to be rested, Fin Allen will miss the second ODI against Bangladesh as he will play for the Auckland Aces in their Super Smash opener on Tuesday. The second ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand will be played in Nelson on Wednesday, December 20.

Tom Latham led the Kiwis in the first ODI where they batted first and scored 239/7 in a rain-truncated 30-over game. Will Young smashed a brilliant century while skipper Latham scored 93 to take them to a competitive total. Bangladesh, on the other hand, were bowled out for just 200. The wickets were shared by all their bowlers with Adam Milne, Ish Sodhi, and debutant Josh Clarkson taking two each.

Meanwhile, New Zealand Cricket in an official statement said that the decision on Jamieson was taken after he “experienced stiffness in his hamstring following his arrival home from Bangladesh last week”. The Kiwis drew a Test series 1-1 in Bangladesh. Ben Sears who was called in as a cover for Jamieson will stay with the team throughout the series.

“There’s a lot of cricket ahead of us and we want to make sure Kyle’s in the best place possible without taking any unnecessary risks,” Gary Stead said.

“As we flagged when naming the ODI squad we see the series as a chance to provide opportunities to some new players, and Ben fits that category” The Kiwi coach further said.

The second ODI will be played in Nelson on Wednesday, followed by the third ODI in Napier on Saturday. Both teams then play a three-match T20I series. Kane Williamson has been recalled into the T20I side and will lead the team against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh endured another disappointing performance with the bat. Anamul Haque top-scored with 43 as none of the other batters were able to convert their starts into big scores Afif Hossain (38) and Towhid Hridoy (33) were the next best scorers for their team.

In the post-match press conference, Anamul Haque spoke about the reason behind his team’s loss in the match. He said that his team’s inability to use the frontline bowlers due to a curtailed game was one of the key reasons behind the loss.

“If you notice carefully when the overs were curtailed, the main bowlers faced a problem,” Anamul told reporters after the game. Shoriful, Mustafizur didn’t get to bowl at the end since a bowler can only bowl six overs and we had to use the part-timers. If some of the bowlers had overs left, we could have used that. That’s where the problem was and there was wind and we had to use spinners,” he said.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson will lead the Blackcaps in the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh. The three-match T20I series between New Zealand and Bangladesh starts at McLean Park in Napier on December 27. After that, the two teams will head to Tauranga’s Bay Oval for the last two matches of the series on December 29 and 31 respectively.

Kane Williamson, Jimmy Neesham, and Ben Sears are the only players in the squad who didn’t feature against England in the Kiwis’ latest T20I series earlier this year. Kane Williamson missed that series as he was recovering from his knee surgery.

Jimmy Neesham was originally in the squad to face England but he had to return to New Zealand early before the birth of his first child. With express pacer Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne filling the bowling spots, Ben Sears didn’t feature.

Ben Sears gets an opportunity to play international cricket at home for the first time with all of his previous features coming overseas. Devon Conway, who opens the batting for New Zealand in this format was not considered for selection as he enjoys his rest period following a heavy workload during the 2023 cricketing calendar.

Meanwhile, Michael Bracewell (Achilles), Lockie Ferguson (Achilles), Matt Henry (hamstring), and Henry Shipley (back) missed out due to their respective injuries. Star left-arm pacer Trent Boult made himself unavailable for this series.

New Zealand Head Coach Believes The Series Will Start The Team’s Preparation For Next Year’s ICC T20 World Cup

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said that this series represents the start of the team’s preparation for next year’s ICC T20 World Cup. the World Cup is scheduled for June 2024 and will be hosted jointly by the West Indies and the United States of America.

“It’s great to be able to finish off a busy year that started on the road by having the group together in New Zealand. We’ve played T20 cricket in a wide variety of conditions this year and it’s been great to see a broad range of players making contributions. Tim Seifert, as an example, returned to the side in a specific role at the top of the order and made significant contributions in each series he was part of,” said Gary Stead.

“With a World Cup in the middle of next year, we‘re well into our planning in terms of both the tournament and the type of squad we might need in the conditions. While we’re advanced in our planning, as we saw with the One Day World Cup Squad this year with the likes of Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra – there is certainly still time for players to come into that mix,” he added.

New Zealand’s T20I Squad For Bangladesh: Kane Williamson (c), Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Kyle Jamieson, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ben Sears, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee

The coaching staff will include head coach Gary Stead with regular batting coach Luke Ronchi, Canterbury Men’s Development Coach Brendon Donkers as the bowling coach, and NZC High-Performance Network Coach Dean Brownlie. The squad will assemble on the 26th of December in Napier.

New Zealand are set to take on Bangladesh in a three-match ODI series at home. An Indian-origin player Adithya Ashok is eyeing his ODI debut for New Zealand during the series against Bangladesh.

Adithya Ashok is a 21-year-old right-arm spinner. He has already made his T20I debut for New Zealand back in August in a match against UAE. Notably, New Zealand have rested many big names for the Bangladesh ODI series.

Senior members like Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, and Devon Conway among others are not part of the New Zealand vs Bangladesh ODI series. Tom Latham will lead the team in the three-match series.

Adithya Ashok, Two Other Debutants Named In New Zealand Squad

Other than spinner Adithya Ashok, two more debutants are part of the New Zealand ODI squad against Bangladesh. Seamer William O’Rourke and Joshua Clarkson are both part of the New Zealand squad and are highly expected to make their ODI debut during the Bangladesh series.

Adithya Ashok played a T20I game for New Zealand against UAE earlier this year. The leg spinner hunted 1 wicket in that match. Kiwi skipper Tom Latham hopes that the new players will show their best skills in the series.

“With a few guys resting there are opportunities. We hope the new guys come in and show off their skills as best they can. It’s a really exciting bowling attack”, Tom Latham said.

On Tuesday, December 12, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the rating given to the pitch used for the second Test of the two-match series between the Bangladesh National Cricket Team and the New Zealand National Cricket Team.

The second Test between the Bangla Tigers and the Black Caps was hosted by the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur from December 6. The pitch produced for the game came under heavy scrutiny as it was a raging turner that provided a little too much assistance to the spinners.

However, the strategy backfired heavily as Bangladesh were unable to win the match and seal the series. Bangladesh registered scores of 172 & 144 in their two innings and in response, New Zealand posted 180 & 139/6 on the board to win the match by 4 wickets and level the series 1-1.

A total of 36 wickets fell in the match in 178.1 overs, with 30 wickets being picked by the spin bowlers. This was the third-lowest number of balls bowled in a Test match (1069) for that many wickets to fall.

ICC Rates Bangladesh vs New Zealand 2nd Test Pitch As ‘Unsatisfactory”

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has passed on an “unsatisfactory” rating to the pitch at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur for the second Test of the ICC World Test Championship between Bangladesh and New Zealand.

The Match Referee, David Boon, submitted his report to the ICC in which he stated that the pitch was underprepared and there was inconsistent bounce on the surface.

“The outfield was very good and held up extremely well with the rain. However, it appeared that the pitch may have been under prepared, as it was not hard and was covered in grass clippings on day one.

“From the first session onwards, throughout the remainder of the match the bounce was inconsistent with numerous balls bursting the surface. Deliveries from spin bowlers often went over the batter’s shoulder when playing forward and then occasionally stayed very low,” Match Referee, David Boon said.

Following the assessment, the venue has got one demerit point. Notably, any venue that receives six demerit points in a rolling five-year period would get banned from staging any international cricket for 12 months.

Meanwhile, the New Zealand skipper Tim Southee had described the second Test pitch as “probably the worst wicket” he had played on in his long career.

“It is probably the worst wicket I’ve come across in my career,” Southee said. “The balance between bat and ball was heavily favoured into the bowler’s hands. I think for the match to be over in 170 overs sort of reflects that. So, for our guys to scrap away and then come away with the win was a big pleasure.

“I think it was just a scrappy Test match. It was obviously a tough wicket. Runs were hard to come by, and just those little moments and partnerships throughout were crucial, whereas in other matches, I guess when conditions are a little bit more even between bat and ball, they don’t get noticed as much.”

Cricket Australia has made a plea to the Bangladesh Cricket Board regarding the rescheduling of the two-match Test series. The test series is currently scheduled for the 2027 season and Australia wants to schedule it before the scheduled date.

According to the Future Tour Program, Australia were scheduled to host Bangladesh in March 2027 for a two-match test series but now they want to play the series in August- September of 2026. Australia requested for the reschedule as they are looking to host two Test matches in Melbourne which includes a special 150th anniversary Test against England in the summer of 2026-27. Furthermore, Cricket Australia is planning to extend the three-match Test series against New Zealand which is scheduled ahead of the Bangladesh series.

“They (CA) have requested us to reschedule it (tour for Test series in 2027) but it is still under discussion. They have got a plan to celebrate their 150th anniversary and that is a national commitment and due to that they want to reschedule the Test series against us and working on that,” BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury said on Tuesday.

Bangladesh Last Played A Test Series In Australia Back In 2003

Bangladesh have played only one Test series in Australia since earning Test status when they toured in 2003 for the two-match series. Bangladesh had to play two Tests and three ODIs against Australia in 2018. However, the tour was canceled over indifferences between broadcasters of the series.

The Australian team refused to travel to Bangladesh in 2015 due to security concerns and later played that series in 2017 which was the last the two teams played in the longest format. Bangladesh were supposed to host Australia in 2020 but that series was canceled due to the Coronavirus outbreak worldwide which affected the whole cricketing world for almost a year.

BCB is likely to accept Australia’s request to reschedule the series given that there is a lot of time for preparation even after rescheduling the series ahead of the scheduled date. Australia will celebrate their 150th anniversary in test cricket during the 2026-27 season as they were one of the first two teams to get a test status. However, it is a possibility that if BCB rejects Australia’s plea then the hosts will reject to play against Bangladesh in the future.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) national selector Habibul Bashar talked about the pitch at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka for Bangladesh vs New Zealand 2nd Test. He said that they weren’t doing anything intentionally and admitted that the wicket there had something to do with the soil.

The pitch of Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka came under scrutiny after the second Test match between Bangladesh and New Zealand concluded. It was a proper rank turner and the batters had no clue how much the ball would turn.

Out of 36 wickets that fell in the game, 30 were picked by spinners, which gives a partial idea about the pitch. BCB wanted to have a spin-favoring track but the backfired as New Zealand defeated them by 4 wickets.

The pitch was even criticized by New Zealand skipper Tim Southee. After the game, he mentioned that this was one of the worst pitches that he ever come across in his career.

Habibul Bashar spoke about the pitch preparation and admitted that nobody would’ve wanted to play on that wicket. He blamed the soil in Dhaka for the way the pitch played out. Speaking to Cricbuzz, he explained:

“We would obviously want to have a spin-friendly wicket against New Zealand but the only problem when we try to prepare a spin track in Dhaka, it turns out that way and probably it has got something to do with the soil. If we had tried to make a similar wicket in Chattogram or Sylhet it wouldn’t had been the same case.

“So I don’t think there is anything intentional regarding the wicket in Dhaka. I don’t think anyone would like to play on this kind of wicket because if you want to have the ideal wicket it is the wicket in Sylhet where there is something for everyone. What I understand that because of soil when Mirpur wicket is prepared to assist the spinners it turns out that way.”

People highlight (the Dhaka wicket) very much – Habibul Bashar

Habibul Bashar further added that people hype Dhaka’s wicket too much and stressed that they played on different wickets against Asian teams. He highlighted that when they play on spin-friendly tracks there’s a lot of noise as compared to playing on green tracks. He added:

“I think what people don’t understand is that we highlight (the Dhaka wicket) very much but we didn’t play on similar wickets against Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan or Ireland. It is only when we play against New Zealand, Australia or South Africa though – we are not playing against them for quite some time – when we play in this kind of wicket and it grabs all the attention.”

“You just see its not long ago when pacers took most of the wickets against Afghanistan and Ireland and against India we had a comparatively sporting wicket while against Sri Lanka we did not play on similar surface. Our captain said that when we are playing with three pace bowlers no one raises fingers but when we are playing with three spinners there is a lot of talk. When we are playing on this kind of wicket we hog the spotlight but when we are playing on a green top we don’t have similar kind of noise.”

The series between Bangladesh and New Zealand ended in a draw. The two teams will now be taking on each other in a three-match ODI series in New Zealand, starting 17th December.

New Zealand Test skipper Tim Southee slammed the pitch at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka after they won the second Test to level the series against Bangladesh. Bangladesh won the first Test by 150 runs and the Kiwis bounced back in style to win the second Test.

New Zealand needed 137 to win in the second innings and the Bangladesh spinners tried to make their job as hard as possible. Standing in their way was Glenn Phillips who scored an unbeaten 40 off 48 balls and along with Mitchell Santner (35 off 39) added an unbeaten stand of 70 runs to take the Kiwis to a win. New Zealand were 69/6 when Santner joined hands with Phillips. The right-hander scored a valuable 87 off 72 balls in the first innings and also took three wickets.

Speaking after the game at the post-match press conference, Tim Southee said that the Dhaka wicket was the “worst” he has seen in his career.

“It is probably the worst wicket I’ve come across in my career. The balance between bat and ball was heavily favoured into the bowler’s hands. I think for the match to be over in 170 overs sort of reflects that. So, for our guys to scrap away and then come away with the win was a big pleasure,” Southee said.

It Was A Scrappy Test Match: New Zealand Test Skipper Tim Southee

He further described the second game as a “scrappy” Test match where runs were hard to come by.

“I think it was just a scrappy Test match. It was obviously a tough wicket. Runs were hard to come by, and just those little moments and partnerships throughout were crucial, whereas in other matches, I guess when conditions are a little bit more even between bat and ball, they don’t get noticed as much” Southee said further.

Bangladesh will be touring New Zealand now for a white-ball series of three ODIs and three T20Is starting from December 17. Phillips for his superlative batting effort was named the Player of the Match. Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam was named the Men of the Series for his 15 wickets in the two-match series.

Bangladesh cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim has filed a complaint against the renowned media company for spreading fake and unfounded news about him. Rahim’s legal notice is a response to Ekattor TV’s spot-fixing report during the Bangladesh-New Zealand Test series.

During the first game, a report titled “Smell of spot-fixing in Mirpur Test! Doubts on senior cricketer!” focused on the dismissal of Rahim for ‘obstructing the field’. The report was broadcast on the Facebook page and YouTube channel of Khelajog on December 6.

Mushfiqur Rahim attempted to catch the ball with his hand, violating cricketing laws that prohibit batters from handling the ball during or after a delivery. The right-handed batter became the first Bangladesh cricketer to be dismissed in that way in international cricket.

Mushfiqur Rahim Mentally Shattered – Shihab Uddin Khan

Reacting to the spot-fixing report aired by Ekattor TV, Rahim’s lawyer, Barrister Shihab Uddin Khan, issued a legal notice to the channel. The lawyer stated that the report contained criminal defamation and cyber-bullying, causing defamation and emotional distress.

“The news report has left Mr. Mushfiqur Rahim mentally shattered, who can hardly believe that a news channel, as reputed and esteemed like Ekattor TV can resort to such a vile instance of yellow journalism without considering its far-reaching purport.”

“It is claimed that the report and its publication in the manner aforesaid, where it has been seen, accessed, and downloaded by countless millions throughout Bangladesh and the rest of the world, has lowered our client in the eyes and estimation of right-thinking people, and therefore constitutes criminal defamation punishable under Section 500 of the Penal Code, 1860 and cyber-bullying contrary to Sections 25(1)(Ka), 25(2) and 29 of the Cyber Security Act, 2023, besides entitling our client to proceed against you for exemplary damages as compensation by instituting civil legal action,” it was stated in the legal notice.

The Legal Notice demands corrective actions, including the immediate removal of the report from all platforms and an unconditional on-air apology on Ekattor TV. The notice argues that the report lacks journalistic ethics and has severe consequences for Rahim’s reputation.

New Zealand were struggling on 55/5 against Bangladesh while trailing 172 in their first innings of the second test when Glenn Phillips decided to stick to his mantra of ‘using the bat as much as possible’. Phillips started to bat like a limited-overs match and scored a brilliant 87 off just 72 deliveries on a tricky Dhaka wicket taking New Zealand’s total to 180.
Glenn Phillips cleared the boundary line 13 times in his innings of 87 with nine fours and four maximums scoring in every direction. However, his slog-swept sixes were the most effective given they took the Bangladesh spinners by surprise and forced them to shorten their lengths which allowed Glenn Phillips to attack more freely.
“I was just trying to play with my bat as much as possible and picking my poison effectively,” Phillips said after the day’s play. “It was about understanding that they’re going to bowl really good balls and what do I want to have in my court to be able to counteract those balls. I guess just trying to stick to my game plan as clearly as possible.
“I accepted the fact that the pitch is going to have a little bit of turn and bounce in some stages, and I was not getting too caught up in that and just trying to stay calm and as clear as possible.”
“For me, it is about using my bat as much as possible. I’m generally not looking to leave many deliveries. I will defend balls that are there to defend and that are really well bowled. But on pitches like this, understanding that sometimes being a little bit more aggressive is almost the best remedy.”
“If you can put a bowler off their length a little bit, then you can get them to bowl in the area that you would feel a bit more comfortable with.”

Glenn Phillips Talks About How He Planned Against Bangladesh

The question definitely arises How did Glenn Phillips prepare for this innings after the whole second day was washed out in rain before resuming on the third morning on 5? Glenn being interested in playing as much as possible, analysed how the rest of the Kiwi batters made contact with the ball, and according to that he made a few adjustments without changing his style of play.
“I saw a graphic about the different contact points of our batters. Everybody has a different way of going about it. Some guys come a lot further forward, some guys go a lot further back. It’s just understanding what works best for that individual. For me, trying to stay a little bit leg side of it and use my bat as much as possible was probably the key,” he added.
Glenn Phillips missed out on a well-deserved century and was visibly upset about something when he nicked the ball behind on 87. He explained the whole incident saying, “Just at the last second when Shoriful [Islam] got into his delivery stride, someone walked out from the side of the sight screen. I should have pulled away but it was also in my head. It’s probably a bit too late and then I didn’t watch the ball and I didn’t pull away; I did neither and I nicked it off.”
Glenn Phillips said that the Kiwis would not like to chase anything above 180-200 on this tough Dhaka track and his wish was fulfilled after Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner cleaned the Bangladesh batting lineup taking six and three wickets respectively restricting them to 144. Now New Zealand only requires 137 runs in the fourth innings to win the test after losing the first one.
