The SL vs AFG first ODI will be played in Pallekele. The match starts at 2.30 pm IST. The match kickstarts a three-match series with both teams looking to go hard and win the series.

Afghanistan will be led by Hasmatullah Shahidi. He led the side in the World Cup. Afghanistan won four games in the tournament beating Sri Lanka as well. He will be without the services of Rashid Khan who i still recovering from his lower back surgery.

Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have played 17 matches with the Lankans winning seven and the Afghans four games. Afghanistan won the last two meetings between the two teams in the World Cup. In five T20Is, Sri Lanka won three games, and Afghanistan five.

ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf spoke about his team playing their first Test match against Sri Lanka who have a rich heritage of Test cricket. Afghanistan is slotted to play a few Test matches in 2024 starting with the match against Sri Lanka and the ACB chairman is hopeful that the team will count on their chances. Before the Test match started he gave a glimpse into the 10-day preparation camp that the Afghan players undertook in Abu Dhabi to get themselves adjusted to the conditions in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka will be led by Kusal Mendis. He was the newly appointed ODI skipper after the World Cup. Sri Lanka played an ODI and T20I series against Zimbabwe leading into this Series. They won the ODI series 2-0 but lost the T20I series despite being the better team on the field. Zimbabwe tested Sri Lanka in all the games and even won the second T20I.

The Lankans have a formidable bowling unit with Hasranga and Theekshana both available for selection. Pacers Dilshan Madushanka and Dusmantha Chameera are also available for selection. The batting is taken care of by Mendis himself. Sadeera Samarawickrama, Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka and Avishka Fernando.
