Mumbai Indians were able to execute a tremendous transfer deal with the Gujarat Titans wherein they brought back all-rounder Hardik Pandya for a whopping price of INR 15 crore. In return, MI had to release Australian all-rounder Cameron Green. However, soon after Pandya was brought back into the team, he replaced Rohit as the captain of the team.

Hardik Pandya was released by Mumbai Indians ahead of the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction and was picked by Gujarat Titans. Pandya helped GT win the title in their debut season whereas, they ended up qualifying for the finals in 2023. There were also speculations of a rift between the two players, and it was believed that Rohit was not happy with the decision of the MI management. Now, the comment made by Rohit Sharma’s wife on Mark Boucher’s podcast has once again opened up the debate about the rift between the two players.

While Rohit has led the Mumbai Indians to five Indian Premier League titles, the last three editions have not been appealing for him as the captain of the team. While MI won two back-to-back IPL titles in 2019 and 2020, they failed to make it to the playoffs in 2021 and 2022. On the other hand, MI lost to Gujarat Titans in the Qualifier 2 in 2023.

Also, Hardik Pandya performed well with both bat and ball in the last two seasons of the Indian Premier League. Pandya was one of the leading run scorers of the franchise. Pandya also showed great maturity as the captain of the team and made many brilliant tactical decisions.

However, Rohit Sharma’s contribution as the captain of Mumbai Indians cannot be forgotten. Sharma is the second most successful skipper in the history of the IPL and has won 87 matches from 158 games. His win percentage has been 56.32.

Rohit Sharma has also proved to be an exceptional captain for the Indian cricket team. Under Rohit, India have also performed brilliantly in the bilateral series and the ICC events. Rohit also played with a different batting mindset in the ODI World Cup 2023 and scored 597 runs from 16 games. Rohit slammed one hundred and also gave the team many attacking starts and put the pressure back on the opposition.
