However, he was back to his best in T20I cricket with match-winning performances against Australia and South Africa. The injury means that Surya is likely to miss the India vs Afghanistan T20I series at home starting on January 11.
The Indian Express further reported that SKY had twisted his ankle while fielding during the third T20I in Johannesburg. The scans revealed a tear and if the fitness routine is properly followed he should be fit by the first week of February.
Suryakumar Yadav Will Take Time To Recover: BCCI Official
The BCCI officials further confirmed SKY’s injury thereby stating that the star batter will be out of cricketing action as of now and will need time to recover.
“He will take some time to recover. He will have to report to the National Cricket Academy later to do his rehabilitation. He is surely going to miss the Afghanistan series,” a source in the Indian board informed.
Suryakumar Yadav was handed over the captaincy in the absence of Hardik Pandya who is also out of the game nursing his ankle injury. The BCCI might need to find a new skipper with Rishabh Pant also likely to make a comeback during the IPL. Regular skipper Rohit Shama has not played T20I cricket since the T20 World Cup alongside Virat Kohli.
SKY recently scored his fourth T20I ton in the third T20I against South Africa. He scored 100 off 56 balls to power India to 201/7 in 20 overs. The Proteas were bowled out for a paltry 95 as India won the match by 106 runs to level the series. Surya was awarded the Man of the Match for his match-winning knock.
“I am good. I am walking, so good. Always a good feeling. When it comes in a winning cause, it makes me happier” said SKY as he gave an update on his injury after the match.
“We wanted to play some fearless brand of cricket. The idea was to bat first, put some runs on the board and defend. The boys work day in and day out. Happy that they showed some character. He(Kuldeep) is never happy. He is always hungry. It is a nice self-gift on his birthday. I mean it is important to know your game. I just go out there and enjoy myself. The balance is important” he added further.
The Indian batter was rested for the ODI series against South Africa that India won 2-1 as well. It was KL Rahul who led India in the series with the senior players rested.
