ToggleThe AUS vs WI T20I series kicks off with the first T20I in Hobart on February 09, Friday. The match starts at 1.30 pm IST. Australia whitewashed West Indies in the ODI series with mammoth victories in all three matches.
The Aussies won the first ODI by 8 wickets the second by 83 runs and humbled West Indies by 10 wickets in the third ODI. The Windies were bowled out for just 86 runs in the final ODI which Australia tracked down in just 6.5 overs.
The series now moves onto the three-match T20I series with plenty at stake for both teams. The series kicks off preparations for both teams for the T20 World Cup 2024. West Indies will be led by Rovman Powell while Mitchell Marsh leads Australia. Both teams have their T20 specialists back for the series as well.
The players from both teams were playing across various T20 leagues. The likes of David Warner, Andre Russell, and Nicholas Pooran were playing in the ILT20, while Marcus Stoinis and Tim David were playing in the SA20. Various Australian players are fresh off an entertaining BBL campaign.
Meanwhile, there are selection concerns for both teams. Shimron Hetmyer has not found a place in the Windies T20I side. Australia, on the other hand, have injury concerns with Nathan Ellis. He is ruled out of the series with a rib injury and is sidelined from cricket for almost a month as per reports in Cricket Australia’s official website. Spender Johnson who broke a deal with Gujarat Titans in the IPL was named as his replacement.
The two teams have played 146 ODIs with the Aussies winning 79 matches and West Indies 61. In 19 T20Is, Australia have won 9 games while West Indies 10. West Indies looks to be the more experienced of the two sides. Mitchell Sarc and Pat Cummins have been rested for the series. Josh Hazlewood who missed the third ODI has been added to the T2-0I side as is Glenn Maxwell who missed the ODI series as well.
Australia are currently placed fourth in the ICC T20I rankings while West Indies is seventh. The series kicks off preparations for both teams for the T20 World Cup 2024. India, New Zealand, and England are the top three teams in the latest T20I rankings. Windies have won the T20 World Cup title twice (2012, 2016) and Australia once in 2021.
