South Africa has named a very inexperienced unit. Neil Brand was named the skipper for the South African Test squad. He was amongst the even uncapped players who were included in the squad ahead of the Test series.
Keegan Petersen with 13 Test matches is the most experienced batter in the squad. Many of the players made their debut in the first Test.
Cricket South Africa announced its second-string Test squad for the two-match NZ vs SA Test series. This was because the first-choice players were busy playing in the SA20. Cricket South Africa emphasized the importance of the tournament bringing revenue to the nation.
However, it was met with criticism from all corners of the world, with former Australian captains Steve Waugh and Michael Clarke also criticizing the move. The SA20 2024 ended on Saturday with Sunrisers Eastern Cape winning their second consecutive title.

New Zealand and South Africa have played 48 Test matches with the Kiwis winning six games while the Proteas 26. 16 Test matches ended in a draw. In 23 Test matches played in New Zealand, South Africa have won nine and New Zealand just three. 11 out of those matches were drawn. The last Test series between the two teams in New Zealand ended in a 1-1 draw.
South Africa have emerged victorious in two of their last five Test matches against New Zealand. The last Test between the two sides ended in the Proteas’ favor by a big margin of 198 runs.
The match happened in February 2022, where Sarel Erwee’s century guided the visitors to an emphatic win. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s win in the first Test has taken the hosts to the top of the WTC points table. The Proteas are currently placed seventh with a PCT of 33.33.
