ToggleThe last two PAK vs NZ T20Is will be played in Christchurch. The fourth game will be played on January 19, Friday. The match starts from 11.40 am with New Zealand having already won the series.
New Zealand won the first T20I by 46 runs, the second by 21 runs, and the third by 45 runs. In the process, they decimated the Pakistan bowling attack and gave them the worst possible start to 2024. Pakistan have not won a T20I series since 2022 and this was another series loss in their kitty.
Fin Allen powered his way through to 137 off just 62 balls with five fours and 16 sixes, the joint-most in a T20I innings. Tim Seifert with 31 was the second-highest scorer for New Zealand in the innings. Glenn Phillips scored 19 while Pakistan conceded 13 extras.
Pakistan in their chase stood no chance chasing 225 to win. Babar Azam scored his third consecutive fifty scoring 58 off 37 balls. Contributions from the other batters turned out to be too little too late as Pakistan lost by 45 runs and conceded the series.
Fin Alllen’s powerful batting did not allow the hosts to miss Kane Williamson who is ruled out from the final three games with a hamstring injury. He picked up the injury while batting in the second T20I. He was injured on the same right leg that he had the knee injury. The management is now trying to get him fit for the Test series against South Africa.
For Pakistan who lost the Test series against Australia, they were expected to do much better in the T20I format under their new skipper. However, he had had a tough series conceding just four wickets in the three games giving way 119 runs at an average of 29.75. None of the Pakistan bowlers seems to be in form capable of challenging the Kiwi batters.
Babar Azam stepped down as the Pakistan captain across formats after the World Cup. Pakistan’s performance in the tournament was reviewed by the PCB who then decided to change the entire coaching and administrative setup. The PCB also changed with Mohammad Hafeez taking over the team director role from Mickey Arthur and former cricketer Wahab Riaz being appointed as the new PCB chief selector. Shaheen Afridi is the new T20I skipper who will be leading his team for the first time in T20Is.
Lockie Ferguson made a comeback after his Achilles injury and picked up 1/27. Tim Sohee picked up 2/29. Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi took one each. Santner will continue to lead the hosts in Williamson’s absence in the final two games as well.
