ToggleThe SA vs AUS second World Cup semi-final will be played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 16. India and New Zealand played the first semi-final in Mumbai on Wednesday.
South Africa and Australia finished as the second and third teams respectively on the points table. Both teams finished with seven wins and two losses with 14 points in total. The Proteas defeated the Aussies by 134 runs.
South Africa perhaps have been the most dominating side with the bat in this tournament. They scored 428/5 against Sri Lanka in Delhi which is the highest total of this World Cup so far. They have posted over 300 multiple times in this tournament. However, chasing has been their major problem throughout this tournament. They are back at a venue where they lost a game while chasing to against India.
Australia, on the other hand, started their campaign with back-to-back losses against India and South Africa. Now they are on a seven-match winning streak and face South Africa in a rematch of the 1999 World Cup semi-final. The Aussies seem to be peaking at the right time with their players performing and remaining fit for the business end of the tournament.
South African skipper Temba Bavuma suffered a hamstring injury against Afghanistan but participated in the optional training session on Monday. He has not done much with the bat but has used his bowlers masterfully on the field. Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen have been a revelation for them in this tournament. Their batters have scored seven centuries in total with Quinton de Kock alone scoring four.
The venue will definitely play a role. South Africa having already played at this venue before will have an edge in the contest. Australia knowing South Africa’s struggled in chases will want them to bat second.
