Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has landed in legal trouble due to his team’s disastrous performance in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Bangladesh fell short of expectations and ended up in the eighth spot on the points table in the ten-team competition.
Even before the commencement of the World Cup, Bangladesh cricket attracted attention for all the wrong reasons as two of their biggest stars, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, openly took shots at each other. It culminated in Tamim being sensationally axed from the squad. While the players insisted that the controversy wouldn’t impact the campaign, they failed to justify the claims.
Bangladesh began their campaign with an impressive 6-wicket win over Afghanistan. The win, however, was not indicative of the challenges that lay ahead. Bangladesh kept losing match after match as their campaign got completely derailed. The Shakib Al Hasan-led side lost 6 games in a row including a disappointing defeat against the Netherlands.
At one stage, it looked like they would finish at the bottom of the points table and would miss out on a Champions Trophy spot. However, they registered a much-needed win over Sri Lanka to end their losing streak to secure a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy. In their final league game, they posted a 300-plus total against Australia but failed to defend it.
Legal notice against Shakib Al Hasan and BCB chief:
In the wake of Bangladesh’s disastrous campaign in the World Cup, Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief Nazmul Hassan Papon and CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury have been slapped with a legal notice. A lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court has sent a legal notice addressed to the trio for the team’s poor performance in the World Cup.
Lawyer Khandaker Hasan Shahriar sent the notice to the BCB by post on Sunday (November 12). The lawyer revealed that he demanded the trio quit and admit the responsibility for the failure of the team in the World Cup. He also demanded an apology for the entire country from Shakib Al Hasan and the BCB officials.
Among other demands, the lawyer called for the dissolution of the entire coaching staff and selection committee. He also asked for the formation of a body to investigate the reasons for the failure of the team in addition to organizing domestic leagues on wickets of at least the same quality as international competitions. The notice also slammed Shakib Al Hasan for his poor leadership and criticized the decision to leave out Tamim.
