- Australia played their first Test match against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1877 and won that game by 45 runs. Charles Bannerman starred with the bat in the game, scoring the first Test century (165) and retired hurt.
- The Ashes rivalry began in 1882 after Fred Spofforth’s sensational spell of 7/44 helped Australia defend 84 runs at the Oval. He retired after setting a number of major batting records such as the highest Test score (334 vs England, 1930), most runs (6996), most centuries (29), and a Test batting average of 99.94.
